Im down here in Destin for vacation... about to spend some time on the beach with the wife... she likes to sit out there for hours... so thought Id pick up a book about cars, customs, hot rods, traditional hotrods... etc.

Whats a good book I can pick up at a bookstore chain like Barnes and Noble or Books A million.. havent seen any other book shops here...

    Thanks.

I wanted to pick up the book by Jessee james "how to build dam near anything." anyone know if it's any good? There were a couple of books out by Mark martin( the Nascar driver) he's always been interesting when he's been interviewed, wonder if he has anything out about the old days in nascar? Of course i always have my copy of how to build and power tune SU carburators, and i always enjoy reading the engine builders handbook from Tom Monroe, if you can find a copy

uh... go to the book store and see what they have in stock. most of my auto book collection came from Barns and Nobles. I go in there once a month to read the magazines for free.

it's not like they stock all the cool stuff all the time. last time I was there there didn;t have shit.

Gene Winfields book is cool... as is the So Cal Speed shop book. 32 Ford book... Model T book... there is a bunch of them.

Barnes and Noble does carry TRJ.

  18. You could do better than the JJ book. A little bit of everything for those that know squat about cars. Decide what you want to read and hunt for a book about specifics and details.

I just found a Peter Vincent book HOT ROD a bunch of nice photos and a bit of history about the salt. Kind of big for the beach though.

For a laugh out loud read, and slightly different view on life in motorsport, get 'Flat out, Flat Broke, by Perry McCarthy. He was the original Stig on BBC Top Gear and if you ever want to see what raw determination can achieve then this is the book for you.

Enjoy your holiday all the same.

Not everyone's cup of tea, especially on holiday, and quite a heavy read even if it is your cup of tea; but something that should be read by everyone who is interested in technology, history, and personal freedom: The Technological Society by Jacques Ellul. Not on the shelf at your local bookstore, though.

  23. Do you want a technical "How To" or a good story, or history? Personally, when I'm on vacation, I'd rather read something like history, story, biography, etc. Something like The Birth of Hot Rodding, The Dry Lakes Era (not sure I got the title 100% right), or The Fast Life and Tragic Death of Mickey Thompson, or Bob McClurg book Diggers, Funnies, Gassers & Altereds. There are books on many of the hot rod/custom icons. Go to Amazon.com and search your interests, make a list and go shopping!

I think a how the hotrodding came about type book would be cool to read... I found a few hot rodding books there but, they were more "street rod" than hotrod. I found a book I almost bought that was how to build a cheap hot rod... it was more the traditional style stuff.

My sister got it for me as a gift a sometime ago... It was a nice thoughtful gift on her part and I keep it for that reason. Otherwise, I'd never bought it for myself.

One of my faves! Read it several times. I grew up in Richmond, CA and there was an Angel house one street up the hill from us, c1967. Later on they would come into the hardware store where I worked to buy brass fittings and stainless bolts for their bikes. Easy to wait on because they knew what they wanted and paid cash. Hell's Angels is a great read.
