Try Specialty Ford Parts for the carb adapter,626-288-2121 Always use a full 360 degree thrust on the rear side, 180 is OK on the front.
I received this info from a Friend. Looks like the Banger bug has caught on and infected the salt. This is the 4 Ever 4 Lakester. At Bonneville, we first ran Ron Mosher's unblown, injected engine at 140, 145 and 148, we then pulled it as planned and put in my blown motor and Ron set the record up to 130 from 104. I then ran it on alky (alcohol) and ran 138 to qualify for the record but had stuck a valve on the first run, so we came home. Am still having serious carb problems with the turbo motor, may have to run 97's next year? There were eighteen 4-bangers running, mostly Model B flatheads with the leader being Joel Young from AZ, he ran 166 and 153 for a 160 average in a Model T powered streamliner! The weather and salt conditions were the best I've seen in years! BTW, alky is the environmentally correct fuel to use! .
i need some help.... "b" engine was running rough. knocking sound that was very faint and started to get a little louder over the summer. engine was always very smooth before....it seems to have gotten rougher after i put on a super winfield 8.5 head. it put water out #2 and #3 after about 10 seconds and looked to be coming out the little "b" steam holes in between 2 and 3. i immediately took it off and put on a 7 to 1 Lion head on ....I think it's 7:1. i didn't cc it so i'm not sure. may be 6:1. i just reshimmed the bottom end and noise is gone. vibration is still there under load only...smooth as silk at part throttle (same as before) i did not see any weird movement of the rods on the pin side or the crank side as the rotating assembly was turned.... what do you guys think....help!
Wondering if I could get some quick help? Last night I made a quick run up to Subway and back, on the return trip my car started to run rough like it had something blocking the fuel flow. I wasn't surprised, as my tank has never been flushed and I've had to blow out my fuel line before. So I got home, blew all the fuel back into the tank (usually does the trick) and took it back out for an around-the-block. Well it still ran like a bag of crap. So I get home tonight, pull the Zenith updraft off and go to town. I totally dis-assemble it and clean it out. Reassemble it and put it back on, as well as drain the sediment bowl and blow the line out. STILL RUNS LIKE ASS. So, my question is...am I missing something here? It's ran great for the past 3 weeks. Playing with my mixture screw doesn't help much, plugs are all clean, wires clean etc etc.
may be sucking air through the intake/exhaust gasket. when the motor is cold...start it up, spray some starting fluid around the intake (at the block) and see if you get a change in the engine rpm, sound, etc. if so you have a leak...it will also run hot if it's running lean from sucking a little extra air.
Did you check the timing? Are the Points clean? I had a similar problem and it ended up being a bad condenser. .
you can check spark on each plug by pulling the wire off the plug and putting it within an 1/8-1/4 inch of the plug tip and check to see if the fire is consistant. if it's sparatic then it's more than likely coil, condensor, or points....usually points.
Every Model A or B engine that I've seen have pistons that come up above the block anywhere from .020 to .060. The typical head gasket crushes to about .050 - .055 thick. Most high comp. heads are mostly flat over the cylinder. If your head didn't have piston relief and your pistons stick up above the block, then more then likely your pistons were smacking the head. If so, You might have a bent rod or pin, or a loose wrist pin bushing. .
I'm running one of the modern points sets, the plate style that drops into the distributor so I don't think it would be the condenser? As for sucking air, that may be a possibility. When we first got it going I had that problem. I'll give it a shot. When I'm driving it, it feels like it's running on 3/4 power and it "spurts" every couple of seconds.
it could be any of that....90% of the time carbs get blamed for ignition problems...but on a banger you have to throw in the intake leak....spray around were the carb mounts to the intake too.
i'll clarify....carbs are blamed....it's really in the ignition...is that what you said? probably not true if your using modern electronics. any other thoughts on my vibration?
i going to the hamb drags at mokan and then to frogfollies and then auburn to v8 club nationals, and then i guess the engine will come out for a little detective work.....not driving it to them....
i noticed #4 rod journel big end had about .015-.016 thrust clearance...seems like i check that a couple years ago and i don't remember it being more than the other ones...hum.
Guys I need help! I am thinking of going the SBC route this winter with my 31, I really would like to keep the banger but am not sure if it will hold up enough to as much as I want to drive it.. It runs Ok now I think it needs some fine tunning. I am learning more and more everyday about these little gems, but really need a push shove in the right direction. I drove Will Kimbles car the other day and WOW that think is killer, peppy tight smooth, yes I know his is a B engine and mines an A, I also know that he has had his gone thru with a fine tooth comb. But I am curious if there is some simple test to do to see if my bottom end,and such is up to snuff. So what would you start with to see if its a solid keeper? Also I have a nice down draft carb and intake set up due to Will also and was thinking of putting it on and a modern electronic ignition as well, so please guys tell me what would be the best route to start with...
Have you cleaned the plugs since you did the carb clean and the tank blow back? If the crap from the tank blocked the needle and seat (float valve) open and made it flood the plugs may well be partially fouled, carboned up.... They will clear if you are at part throttle light load but start missfiring again as soon as you load it, and probably at idle..especially if it is a bit lean idle mixture.
i like to take the route that always puts a smile on my face....if a sbc puts a bigger smile on your face than a banger, then go for it. if banger gives you a bigger smile then stay with the banger and make it what you want it to be over time as money allows.
Not yet just been cutting my teeth on it and driving it around the nieghborhood and fixing the little things that squeak and rattle. Plus I am trying to figure out how to get it inspected here in KY since it has come from OHIO and it has no visible VIN anywhere on the car, and since I have not taken the body off the frame to inspect the vin there I am not even sure if it is visible.. So I am trying to decide what I am going to do there, I have heard horror stories about making VIN tag's and getting caught even if you have a title with a VIN here in KY.. The number on the motor is pitted beyond any means of reading it..I was planning on messing with it this weekend. It run's ok VIBRATES like crazy mid trottle, but smooths out around 35 mph.. I know it needs king pins in a bad way, but wanna make sure its heart and soul is sound because if its not then I may do a complete make-over suspension/brakes/drivetrain. If I find out shes got a sound motor then I may keep her some what stock and drive it till she dies, hell I may even do that anyway, but just upgrade the carb and electrics. So long story short I plan on doing a Compression test/leak down, I already checked charging system and its good, any other things I should take note of just as a heads up kinda check?
well...that's the same road a lot of us have travelled. it's always ended up banger style for me but....each to his own....if motor isn't good it's not that hard to find one that is.... i would tackle the title thing first.
Ugh compression test... I hope it won't come down to that. So I drove it to the bar (wing night!) and back. Ran like a bag there, ran a bit better on the way back. I dropped the carb and took out my gasket. It's in rough shape, so I'll make a new one @ work tomorrow and install it w/ some gasket goo for extra seal. Then I'll pull the plugs one at a time, see who's sparking and who's not. Thanks for all your help guys, I'll get back to you with what I find. Andy, my buddy had a similar problem with his pistons smacking the head. He caught it really quick though, never did any damage. He put two head gaskets in to make a bit more clearance. Yes you'll lose some compression, but if it saves you from causing serious damage...
