There are at least two there, and maybe three. A yellow '57, a white '59 and possibly a red '59 but I can't see enough of the roof to know if it's a Ranchero or a car.

Your enthusiasm is GREAT, 1950Effie. Yeah, Henry Ford WAS a hard-head, not as "brilliant" as some people nowadays think. His son Edsel, on the other hand, WAS a car visionary.

Funny when you say Henry put Edsel over Lincoln to keep him out of his hair. Edsel repaid the favor by almost secretly developing the V-12 Zephyr, which sold 10 times as many units as the regular Lincoln and, in fairness, saved the division.

The Model T catches some well-deserved criticism, but I rarely heard ANYbody say anything negative about the Model A (or the transitional '27 T). It was a car that delivered a lot of reliability, with a modi*** of "style" for the price!

Hooray, Edsel Ford!!! Thanks again, 1950Effie, for the input!!!

The Edsel was a marketing failure, the car was just fine. The survivors prove they are as a reliable car as any other. Except as said, the push****on shifter...................................

  4. And don't forget: One name being considered for Edsels was "Utopian Turtle Top".
I think that would have shortened their production even more!

The engineering of the push ****ons wasn't the only reason the 58' Edsel was doomed, it was also their location. Too many people shoved the car into reverse or park when they tried to honk their horn.

    JF...that's a 59 Edsel Corsair hardtop.

Here's a couple more pictures for your stock car collection:

Been an Edsel lover since I put my first model car together.

I have to agree with 29Nash. The EDSEL was NOT AT ALL A "BAD" CAR.

It was a planning and marketing DEBACLE, though, AND of epic proportions!!! The Ford people started planning an "all new" make in 1954. It took FOUR YEARS to bring the Edsel to market. During that time, a LOT changed in the market place. So, first, they debuted their new car smack as a four year recesssion started to take serious hold.

To make matters MUCH worse, FoMoCo promoted the Edsel as, so to speak, the most radically new and re-thought car since Preston Tucker's Torpedo, ya know? (No WONDER people were "under-whelmed" by the cars, once they could see and touch them in person. "We waited for THIS?" they must have said in the show rooms.

Even FURTHER complicating matters, FoMoCo/M-E-L had NO new, dedicate plant to build the fabulous Edsel in. SO, they ran Edsel production through a Mercury plant, in Kentucky. No slam on Kentuckians (I ARE one). LEGEND HAS IT, the Mercury workers RESENTED the Edsel, and some even SABOTAGED at least a few of the Edsels. So, there were DO***ENTED instances of, e.g., HOOD ORNAMENTS flying off at highway speed and becoming dangerous projectiles.

Then, as PoorBoyBruce said, the (in hind-sight) GIMICKY location of the gear shift (apparently coupled with poor communication from the factory to the dealer lever about MAINTENANCE standards, resulting in poor electrical contact and over-heating), certainly DID result in people inadvertently putting the car in reverse while still moving forward. SHEESH!

Though I, myself, still find the Edsel styling "fresh" enough in comparison to what Detroit, South Bend and kenosha were doing in 1958, planners should have known some people would like the verticle center-grille treatment (frankly, I think, stolen from the Packard Predictor).

If fact, many viewers thought it SO odd, men privately started joshing that it looked like a woman's (er, uh) reproductive organ!

Is it any wonder, then, that -- all factors considered -- the Edsel might had died, even without a recession? You factor in a recession (favoring AMC's gas-misers, ironically enough), and you can see why Edsel sale fell abysmally short of Ford sales targets.

The BEST -- SHORT -- summation I ever heard, though, is that the Edsel was a decent car, but it was in the wrong place at the WRONG time!!!

Nevermind the Edsel with the heartlights in that pic Cooter. That looks like Fireball Roberts in the background.

Danny Bird from the Detroit area WON lots in Edsels against guys like Benny parsons,,,

""In the summer of 1963, the Mt. Clemens Race Track. Races were three times a week featuring the Super Stocks as well as lesser divisions. Pictured here are two of the best drivers of the era, Benny Parsons (#98) and Danny Byrd (#08) battling it out on the half-mile oval.""

Here is all-time great driver Jack Goodwin driving a MERCURY at Mt. Clemens on a Sunday in May 1963 fishtailing his way out of the fourth turn and down the front stretch. As usual, he was out in front of the pack. Jack, as of 2004, was alive and living in Florida.

I just sold my 58 Edsel Citation. I had more calls with no engine than with. I am using the 410 ci mercury 300 horsepower engine in my model a. Edsel was a day late and 1000.00 overpriced when it came out. It was also the most advanced car on the market with many firsts. 59and60 were gay. 58 was and is the only good edsel.

A buddy of mine "Edsel Dan" ran a pink Edsel at some of the local stock car tracks in this area. Currently he has a complete Holman Moody GN stock car ch***is and a spare Edsel body. I've been trying hard to convince him to built it for the street. His car # was 99x

Speaking of that EDSEL PINK, does ANYbody out there know whta the paint #s were? The ol'boys who had my '38 before me painnted it tha color. By the time I bought it, it, it just looked kind of a collr ORANGE. BUT, I could SEE what color it had been when the were running the '54 Chrysler Windsor 265 in it.

Holy mackerel, 1959Effie!!! YOU sure know yer **** 'bout Edsels!!!

Honestly, I was BUYING that --- STILL! --- nobody gives a damn about Edsels.

I'm all warm inside (sorta lie that "Field of Dreams" feeling yer sp'poed ta get when ya see that movie?).

NO, REALLY!!! I ALWAYS THOUGHT THE '58 really WAS the genuine DEAL. Boy! Am I sorry it all petered out.

Good idea, just piss-poor execution (in at least SOME respects) on FoMoCo's part!

On the OTHER HAND, sounds like nobody needs to "rod" an Edsel much. They had some great running gear.

Matter-o-fact, I'd love to own a dead-stock '58 -- regardless of how many doors it has! (Though a 4-door hardtop would be peachy!!!).

Gotta love the FEEL of sitting in the back seast with all the windows down!!!!!!!!

Did I already mention that i have (somewhere) an Edsel center-hub shifter that's missing a plunger? Maybe SOMEbody out there can use it to repair a shift that needs a DIFFERENT push-rod there?

Maybe I should offer it on the "Pay It Forward" site?

Anyway, lemme know. It's NOT for re-sale, ONLY for a HAMBer who REALLY needs it, okay?

I'll have to DIG for it, so don't **** me if you don't really need it -- yourself ( or an Edsel friend).

    vertible'59, no, I never saw a '60 w. a Starliner roof (got a pic?).

But, I did see a couple of '60's. Even if they were mostly Ford/Merc parts. That front clip was NOT standard Ford/Merc. First one i saw, I was aghast (yeah, it's a word. LOL!) at HOW WIDE THAT HOOD WAS!!!!

Seems, to the END, Edsels were at least trying to make osme kind of statement, stylewise, at least.

I have only seen one in person and it was pretty amazing to me, as I have always loved '60 Ford Starliners. Also saw a '60 Edsel convertible in Virginia back in the 80s. Never thought I would get to see one because those are the most rare of all Edsels.
As for pix of the Edsel Starliner, Google Edsel and you will find some GREAT Edsel photos.:)

Whoa! Now THAT is keen, 'vertible!!! I'll check out that link. 'Bout like the Ford/Merc "SunValley" of mid-'50s, right. I mean, SUPER-RARE!

As much as I love my DeSotos & the '57 Chevys, I HAVE to say, I AM A MAD-DOG FOR THE THINGS NOBODYS SEEMS TO HAVE HEARD OF!!!! WOW!

I always liked the 58' because it was so much different than anything else out there at the time. That 410 engine was very similar to the 332 & 352 Fe series. I had a buddy in High School who dropped a 410 in a 50 Ford 2 door sedan with a Ford truck manual 3 speed OD ****** behind it. It also pulled a 4:11 gear. It would fly!
