The Flying Dutchman, Ericson's 65 Chevelle, Lil Red Wagon, and the Green Monstor (which was a jet dragster, not a funny car) were the topstanders in my memory. Favorites? One knows what one remembers. LOL

When my parents first started taking me to the track, I tend to remember favoring Kenny Bernstein. As a kid, I also had the Prudhomme and McEwen Hot Wheels and models, but there was a Corvette in a 1971 book called On the Drag Strip from my grade school library, that I seem to have neglected to return. It was named The Invader and it looked down right mean. A lot of people don't like the exaggerated style of the C3 Corvettes, but they do seem to make nice looking Funny Cars. I also found a picture of another nasty looking Vette on the internet called The Phantom.

    Here you go.

  5. One of my personal faves, back when the F/Cs still looked similar to the real thing was Mazmanian's '69 Cuda. Big John's cars always looked sano and uncluttered, and the early Candies and Hughes cars also were top notch,as was Charlie Allen's. Love the old pics of the Funnies lined up at OCIR for a 32 car show.

When the bodies looked less and less like the real thing, the enjoyment went away, and I went back to my love of doorslammers, like the S/S cars.

  9. The real early Funnys for me. LOTS of variety. Well into the 70's it seemed like a sea of Vegas, Monzas, and Plymouth Arrows. Anyway, hard to pick a favorite. The 1st flip-top Comets sure are memorable. But, anyway, this one really stuck out in the crowd. This on'e Sheldon Konblett's. He's the man behind the famous chain of SoCal Speed Shops titled Service Center

in 1973 Don Schumacher's short lived Lil' John Buttera built Wonder Wagon Vega panel wagon. Following the demise of the panel wagons Don did painted his "Stardust" Cuda in Wonder Bread colors and continued the season, the low slung aerodynamically trick Vega followed in 74.

  11. According to Don Schumacher he never had a Wonderbread Camaro - there were the 4 Vega Panels and then a very short repaint of the Cuda. He then retired from Drag racing in late 1974 to concentrate on family (Tony was 5) and business.

Funny cars are ultra cool. Style, odd stretched proportions, graphics, rake, motors, pipes; all very cool. I am not sure I have a favorite, there are so many that are so nice. Even some of the oddest, lamest normal cars were made into a super cool funny cars. I would love to have an old original funny car just to have and look at. They seem to be pretty hard to come by. I don't see many being sold.

Drag cars today = unbelievably fast, but sadly pretty darn boring.

Yep, I'm an old guy. The Dodge Chargers (specially Jimmy Nix) weren't the fastest, but they were close to being the first and one of my favorites as a kid.

  23. This is a very cool thread. I was in my teens in the 70's and my all time favorite drag racer was Don Garlits but We are talking funny cars here so I will have to say Tom Mcewen with his Mongoose T/F funny car and Don Shumacher in that very cool vega wonder Wagon T/F Funny car. I dreamed that one day I would be staged next to them and did make a serious effort but just did not have the money to compete at there level. A few of you might rember my steel bodied T/A Chevelle and my T/A Dodge omni the california kid

  24. Some local guy named Gary Dyer & Mr.Norm,Ramchargers & Hemi Under Glass to name a few.

Favorite?! I can't narrow it down but most any of the early flip top, candy painted, magnesium wheeled cars does it for me.

Maybe on a much more personal note, the one that is held in highest regard would be the one I had. It was beautiful and loud and lasted for, about an hour. My step-dad helped me get it running (without the guide string), screaming 360's and then straight into the wall at full WOT, pretty much vaporized. Still have one the spindle mount wheels.

Yeah, it was a Cox Pinto FC on a Christmas morning......sweet.

The first ones I ever saw as a kid. These two, parked next to each other in front of Goodies on Lincoln Ave.
