Give me a quick education on gassers

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Tinbender, Aug 25, 2009.

  1. I just read the closed "I don't like g***ers" thread. I do like them, and am concidering un-cliping my 46 Stude M series pick up, and going to a g***er style. Now before you guys thrash me to hard. It will see the track. It will have a big block. (I have a low mile 440 looking for a home). I will also admit that it's the style that makes me want to do this. I have another project that will keep me busy for most of the winter, but I'd like to get this one to a roller stage by spring. I have the front suspension from the F1 that I just cliped (how ironic!) My plan so far; not super high, but a good reversed rake, it's already low in the back, cheater slicks, shortened bed, open up the rear fenders with a little tire sticking out, ladder bar suspension, skinnys up front fenderwell hedders, no bumpers. It's bull nose looking truck and I think it will fit the style well.
Am I on the right track, or just on my way to becoming a poser? What else? Tilt nose? Cage? I dont have any good profile shots of the truck. If anyone does, I'd love to see a photo shop. This is how the truck looked in its last configuration.

    "G***er Style" --- but a pick-up truck?

Something got lost in the translation. Unless it's a '33 Willys, I'd stick with a p***enger car if going for "G***er Look" but that's just my opinion.

  3. g***er trucks can be very cool.

http://g***ermadness.com/ Read up! But to be brutally honest, IMO, it should be a lightweight car, with a too small engine bay, with a whacked off front suspension; retrofitted with another front suspension, cut out engine bay, obvious headers, and can go really fast.

  5. That's ok, I don't want you to lie to me!:D
It's 3000 lb with a SBC, I'm sure the 440 will add a little wieght. I'm changing the suspension, front and rear, fenderwell headers, and no inner fenders. It should run pretty hard with the dodge motor. But thanks, I'll be doing some home work on that link.

G***er trucks are the bee's knees. Especially a '59 Ford. It will be neat to see how yours comes out.

damn thats a nice truck..leave it alone...its already bad*** IMO

  8. Thanks! It's tore down for some changes anyway. Either way it's getting the 440 (it gave up it's SBC for the 33 p/u project) I'm ready for a change, and although I missed the g***er era, every time I see one I know I have to have one at least once in my life. As far as it being a pick up, my dream car would be a 41 willys pick up g***er. I bought the Stude because it reminded me of a willys (slightly) at about 5% of the cost. I just want to know if I'm on the right track, and also what time period did g***ers start to fade out in drag racing. ( I know they never did die out) but what was there real hey day. I want to be reasonably period correct with this build. I never cared about such things till I found this place!

  9. That's ok every one has an opinion, but for me g***er trucks are "the bees knees"!)

Why don't you just call me and say..."Hey, could you draw me up a pic with my Stude in G***er mode?". Just by chance, I'm doing one of my dad's 'vette right now. :)

If you end up doing this, I want to be there when you run it down the track.

  16. Yeah, I just need to know if I'm on the right track with parts choice. It'll be my first build in this style I think I'm sold on the idea!

  17. i get flamed here i have deleated most all posts
i doo trucks g***er it . its yours

  18. Hey I've got a '59 Ford, it is just screaming to be a "g***er" buy it now and your on your way..

Seriously I saw lots of trucks years ago, Willys, Austins, ??? wait I thinking?? I am sure some ran in the lower cl***es, but for most it was the whole power to weight thing.

There was one '57 Ford truck that ran at Lions in the mid to late '60s it was bright yellow, sat low in the front, had a 427 Fe and hauled ***.

To me the end of the G***er War years was when all the gas racers built Mustang, Corvette, and other late model bodied g***ers, and when
SWC, Big John, Gene Conway, and many of theothers switched to funny cars, around '68

Hey it your truck do what makes you happy

    from nowhere...

They built G***er trucks BESIDES Willy's...Geeezzz....

If it was up to some of you, I think I'd be watching every '55 Chevy post car on earth face off against every Willy's coupe on earth, ad infinitum.

The Ford truck from Lion's was an Altered, however...
    AND: BAD-***!
People built ALL KINDS of things...
Many early trucks were NOT that heavy, and some made it out there...as well as four doors, wagons, you name it....
Maybe not the most popular, or most competetive, by fate, or happenstance, or whatever shortcomings, but...

Hell, How far is going to the nostalgia drags and watching the same four body types face off, over and over, from the lameness of watching the same four body types face off in Super Pro....

    God bless variety.
    I LOVE my '58 F100 "G***ER"

Next year, after we secretly paint it,and do some tuning, maybe some of you guys out there in '55 Chevy's can examine its taillights, and tell me how "impractical", and "non-traditional" it is afterward. :D

And, for the record: I LOVE '55 Chevy's, AND Willy's...so don't get all pouty...
    'cuz I like variety, too...

Variety is where its at .... There were tons of Un-Popular cars built Back Then.

One thing i get Sick of hearing is all the guys that say "If you build a G***er, You Better Build it to race and it better be fast"

Well, I Have one as a project... A '54 Ford with a DeSoto hemi.

I'll Bend it over at some of the Vintage Drag meets, But i am building it as a STREET car.

Everyone Here seems to believe that if it has a Straight Axle, it's a G***ER...

My car i DO NOT think its a G***ER at all, Its more of a Flash Back of the cars my Uncle & his Buddy's Ran around My Town in when i was a Kid in the Early '70's.

I wanted one ever since so.... '54 Ford with a Straight axle, Hemi, Posi Pontiac rear & Torque Thrust style wheels FOR THE STREET !

Its not a STREET FREAK or a G***ER, I guess you could call it a STREET RACER from the Late '60s Early '70s

My uncle had a sinilar but different car he drove DAILY in the '70s... '54 Chevy, Cragar's & slicks, 409 4spd & posi they robbed from a REAL '62 Impala with a Chrome Straight Axle.

There not all G***er's so get off the Fake G***er Hating, That **** was on the Street's then to !

  22. Cool thanks! Nice Stude as it sits...but could we go higher in front and take some length out of the box?

  23. BTW, even if I leave it ground s****ing low like it is now, it WILL be fast, and I WILL race it:D It was pretty quick, and I HAVE raced it!
