I was noticing the huge amount of posts by some members and wondered what year did the HAMB start. Yes I have tried the search function before I get jumped on.
about 10 years ago for the message board. The Jalopy Journal hit in '98 or so. everything got reset to '01 at one point after a serious server crash.
I think Ryans email list started in 95? Search his posts, he has l;ayed it all out before. Many of us found the place in 99 or 2000 after HRD came out. I fount it through About. com and the autoholics website.
and let's not forget the kustoms yahoo group, that was fun to, it's about dead now, the only thing I ever get for it are stupid spam, but I can't give it up... I need to check and see if "the big blue car" is still around
Actually the post count is low since we changed locations several times over the years. You will see a lot of March and April 2001 join dates for the old timers because that is the last time we moved and all of us had to rejoin. That probably isn't the first time we joined, just the last time that it was necessary.
Here's a quick and dirty timeline: 1995 The Jalopy Journal was started on Geocities using Prodigy in the comfort of my dorm room at the University of Oklahoma. Plain text, no images... 1996 Tadpole (RIP), Junebug (Dirty Shirts), Christian (Primer), and Ryan started a newsgroup based around traditional hot rods. 1996.5 I continually refused to setup a message board after being asked time and time again by the fellas. 1997 I gave in and started a message board. I ***led it "The Hokey *** Message Board" as a joke... "Cuz there is no way this thing is viable medium." 1999 We joined forces with Hot Rod Deluxe and Kustoms by TSR. 2000 Kustoms by TSR bailed (Jason is still considered OG and a good pal) and we decided that we are control freaks and wanted the H.A.M.B. name all to ourselves... 2001 We moved the HAMB to our own servers and started footing the bill. All kinds of bad **** happened and I proved what a poor IT guy I am. 2002 Version 2.0. I hired the GERMAN to handle the servers. 2003 Version 3.0 and the introduction of Grimlok - best pal and visionary. 2004 Version 4.0 2005 Version 5.0 and the introduction of the SPS - a group of fellas volunteering to help me out - all of em heros... 2006 Version 6.0 and The Jalopy Journal is back from the dead... again, but this time for real... 2008 Version 7.0
****!.... Ryan have I (all of us old timers) been on here that long? Geeeez well you guys are good company! FRITZ
ZMAN > I think we lost those years after the old logo. Remember the white wall slick with mag rim? some one post it so us old farts can reflect LOL FRITZ
ah, that makes sense.. I was wondering where my ole posts, and post count went, pretty sure I had another account to back in the HRD days "blownmaro"
parking lot at mokan maybe???? trent! wow, you gave me a flashback!!!we hillbilllys couldnt get the internet for yrs....one of the first things i ever did online was look up and AMX site{yeah, amc nerd} then i started seein what else was on there! i looked at the autoholics site, and that was the first id ever seen of the HAMB....i got on the message board with my windows 3.1 ,, in 01-02 area....didnt have a clue how message boards worked, so i just stopped to look!@ funny **** everytime i was on there!!! once i came back and seen how many smart***es were on here, it was only natural that i finally sign back up and post!
It seems to me, there was a thread a year or two ago that Ryan had put up some screen shots of old HAMB stuff...perhaps the message board main page or something?
Hey, I have not been here as long as you guys. But I would just like to give Ryan and all the guys who made this possible a big round of applause. I am very greatfull to be on here. I have met some pretty cool people that will remain close freinds for the rest of my life. I also learned so much stuff about everything. It is a great site MUCHOS GRACIAS AMIGOS!
When I joined they were still hazing the newbies. I remember wondering what kind of **** I'd get right before I posted my intro....
Yah i waited for like a year before i signed up because i was afraid of being eaten alive! love the site i would hate to know how many times in one month i hit refresh thats for sure
I joined in '03. But I knew Ryan well before that although I didn't know that he was in KC. I think I found J.J in about 98 or so. I can't say that I have contributed to the sucess of the HAMB. But I have been here to see some major changes.
I'm sure I'm a newbie in the grand scheme of things but I sure like it here. Buncha like-minded hoodlums.
If you would like to see the original pages go here: http://web.archive.org/web/*/http://JALOPYJOURNAL.COM I was a lurker for at least 2 years before I got nerve up enough to join in.
Jason from Victorville,Rob Fortier, and Skip "Luke Jive talker" from Bakersfield were some other early members .
I am a newbie...er Grenade Inspector now with promotion. Thanks Ryan and all you "old timers" who helped make this site grow! We may not agree on everything but we all agree this is the best website for car guys.
Post count doesn't mean much. Mine is high but I think that is mainly because it took me a couple of years to figure out how to put more than one pic on a thread.
Every once in a while i think back to when i joined..I remember there were only around 2K members at the time, and i thought that was huge....Who woulda thought! I didn't wait at all to join..I just did it. I'm pretty sure Dat Dirty Rat told me about it, and the night i checked it out was the night i joined.. I changed my name a few years ago from pakrat32 to my actual name though..
