I thought that those of you who've been keeping this thread and cruisin alive might get a kick outta this. I scanned it outta a 1980 issue of CARtoons. (what looks like an image from the other side of what I scanned bleeding through is actually where an iron on was facing it on the opposite page)

I'm glad you like it guys!

Bash you've got good intentions, but you're mistaken.

This is the cover of the issue I scanned the strip from...

If you'll notice at the end of the strip it mentions that the next issue would have some more about Van Nuys. The cover you posted is the next issue. (Here's my copy)

    And the follow up....

Have I posted this one already??

No problem chief. I don't really have any memorabilia from the blvd...just stacks of CARtoons. There are gobs of references to cruising Van Nuys in them.

  12. hey reid,
i think the pictures from the 3rd cruise on your vnca website are actually pictures from the 2nd cruise

Here's another Cruisin' story. It's a continuation of a story told in 2 parts on thread 72, and has a 5 star rating on Groucho's Bullshitometer.

The first & last time I took my friend Glenn Hanna on a cruse in one of my hand painted cars was back in 1962. Flash forward to our next cruise below in 1968.

Meet Glenn Hanna (photo below), best friend, purveyor of good humor, and grand master of practical jokes and shenanigans. In 1968 I got out of the army, and within a month I started work on my 4th "Mobile Canvas (art car).

Glenn still had a year or so to go, so I wasn’t expecting him to stop by my place for some time, but, one afternoon a few months later I’m painting my car in the garage when Glenn lifts the garage door and says, “I got tired of shooting at people and was kinda wondering what you were up to, so I set down my munitions and headed on over.”

It seems that Glenn was sent to Japan for a week or two of R&R (Rest & Relaxation), but, was able to snag a ride home on a cargo plane. At first I didn’t recognize him because of the wig, false mustache and the Vox bass guitar, but, I remembered this shtick from before, and besides his voice gave him away.

It was a Saturday evening, and after changing back into his uniform we decided to cruise down Van Nuys Boulevard then over the hill through Hollywood down to Wilshire Boulevard to catch a movie.

To avoid the traffic, I cut through the neighborhoods. As we approached, 2 motorcycle cops appeared on either side of us ushering us towards the the search lights and the boulevard. We were as high as kites and thought we were getting busted, but, when we reached the boulevard the cops ushered us into an enormous parade.

Glenn said, “Thanks Bash, you didn’t have to go to all the trouble of planning a home coming parade,” and with that he rolled down the window slid out and sat on the door window frame waving at the crowd as a home coming war hero.

We had gone to see "Wild In The Streets", some crazy 60s movie where everyone over 30 was exterminated. We never did make it to the movie, or find out what the parade was all about, but, I like Glenn’s version better, his homecoming parade. It was a most abstract event, first Glenn was in Vietnam being shot at, then he's in this parade, and then thrown back into the carnage of war.

We were both aware of how fragile life was, so we went with the flow and made as though this really was Glenn's parade. I counted my blessings for having come home, and prayed that Glenn would also be able to make it back. The craziness of all this made the moment that much more dynamic and more memorable.

The parade was huge, and all the bright lights blinding, hipppie girls with roses strung through their long hair ran along side the perimeter rolling Hula Hoops laced with flowers. The motorcycle cops who also patrolled the perimeter sneered at them with disgust, high on the delusion, or day dream of having the chance to beat them with their night sticks.

After a couple of hours of cruising in the parade we headed back to hot rod central, Van Nuys Boulevard. It was after midnight, and the boulevard was bursting with action. As we headed home we kept looking at each other laughing and wondering if this had really happened.

Hey Bash.....THAT is the car I remember...The one with the Kennedy's on it....And Einstein....I may of brought this up before, but do you remember a (mostly) blue VW van, painted "art style", with a blue plexiglass bubble on top? Looked kinda like a turret? This was probably somewhere between '68 -'70...Damn! That was long ago!

    Hi Reid,

Can't say as I remember that one, I do recall seeing one with a painting of a dollar bill on each side.

Yeah, you're right, it's been a long time ago. Sometimes I feel like I sat down to paint something, and got up an old guy. That pretty much sucks 6 ways to sunday!

  26. lol

  27. Be careful. I just got it re-calibrated. So, it's even more accurate than ever:D:eek::p

    Groucho's Bullshitometer

I know most of you have never seen one of these devices. Groucho has kept it under lock and key. However, the plans and diagrams were lifted from his shop while Groucho was out testing his new 5 engine V-9 powered sleeper street dragster. Wait till you see this baby, you'll be left scratching your head.

Needless-to-say, a good black market version of the "Bullshitometer is out there. I will try to provide some photos later, once I find mine. Mine has a Hype Reject Crystal as well. It is both an analog & digital portable device.

    More later......

Well, I looked most of the day and couldn't find it, however, I did find the box.
    (photo below)

  30. wrong wrong wrong. While the pic on the box looks just like me (LOL), my B' O' Meter has way more functions than the one pictured:D (but it IS made by Sears)
