Strange to think I've been on here that long (97-98) and don't have many posts. Just a quiet guy I guess don't have much to say.
I miss GERM. I found it throught the g****vine. Jdubbya talked a bout it....I didn't have internet yet. Now, here I am still addicted.
Well, paint me pink and stuff me in a Honda!!! That made my day reading his thread. It even makes sense!!
I was in school taking auto body when I found the Jalopy Journal for the first time...was doing a search for 59 biscaynes when a photo of mine popped up with a dude named Jason playing guitar in front of it...The photo had been taken at Hangin' Dice '99... Pretty soon I pieced things together and figured out who the kool guy was that posted the photo, and whose site it was. I was hooked from then on. There wasn't such a large number of members then, I didn't think my hazing was all that bad...it's been a while, and I'm still around enjoying learning stuff from this place...it would take an encyclopedia to contain all the info that's been posted here over the years, and next time I get the cashola I am gonna be one of them there alliance people. It's worth the dough, unlike the photo.net membership I held onto for years!
Sometime in 1997-8, I found JJ by using one of the search engines of the time, just searching for hotrods. I sent Ryan a pix of my yellow '40 Ford coupe, he liked it and asked me to write a story about it and send it to him with more pix. Ryan then re-wrote the story ***led "Lost in Heaven". It was on JJ for years and I was so proud to point others to the JJ to view it and all of the other neat stuff on the site. He wrote some great stories. Later on when the HAMB started,I joined up. It has given me a lot more than I have contributed to it and it got me thru the last 10 years of working for a living. Even with all of the computer changes and firewalls installed at my employer, they never stopped me from checking out the HAMB about 10 times a day. Now that I'm retired,I'm on here at least twice a day. Three hotrods and many years later,I'm still here. The other bonus to being on the HAMB is all of the great friends I have made over the years at the meet and greets that Dennis O'Brien and others arranged at the Northeast Nats and TyRods Reunion. Long live Ryan and the HAMB !!!!!!! Glenn
I don't care how long the site has been up. I am just happy as **** that I found it and I thank Ryan and all of you long time members for keeping it alive. This site is the most fun I have had since I set my sister's cats *** on fire..
Hard to believe it's been so long already! I've been 'round these parts for like 12 years! It has gotten so big that I think alot of us OGs just kinda lurk in obscurity. I've found that I learn more when I spend more time reading and less time posting. There are many original Hambers that I'd like to see post more but they rarely do. Guys like ****, Brewsir, Killer, Ron, and.......man, I could go on for a while. Anyway, I'm glad to be a part of the HAMB family. I've met a ton of great folks through this site. You da man Ryan. Thanks...........E
I am a new guy here but I have made lots of friends. and the site allowing the diffrent clubs NWH is killer. I come here at least five times a day and support all the venders and shows I can, Hell I got to meet Bad Bob down in Cailf how kool is that. I cryed when we lost Andy. first member I knew was old beet. Thanks to all who maintain this spot out of my crazy life.
All I know was Ryan was in college and the Rivi was still in 1 piece, cause I wanted to buy it.......I should have. My biggest regret. I have no idea when I got here. The JJ was stagnant so I didn't understand the website, computers were new to me, I got on using one of those AOL frisbees. I started a post talking about starting a traditional hot rod club in OKC and JK emailed me as well as Ryan. We never formed the club. Warpigg came by one of our poker runs in his Chrysler with cabinet knob grill.
I discovered the HAMB right after Hot Rod Deluxe came out and I became interested in rods again. I've seen a lot of changes here, mostly for the better. Check out the old HAMB: http://web.archive.org/web/20010305082419/www.jalopyjournal.com/TJJ/editorial.htm Thanks Ryan for 10 years of the current HAMB; it's been better than any magazine I've subscribed to; and even though I mostly lurk it's led to meeting lots of new people and new experiences-Lone Star Roundup twice!
I remember lurking back 01ish, the first post that stood out to be was a guy making his own radiator and i was blown away, such homebuilt craftsmanship. Wish I had more to contribute as this place has answered just about every hot rod question I ever had.
I "found" this place when Fuelpump and Hatch started telling me about this super cool hot rod site they had found. I had just started using a computer and lurked for quite a while until just "had" to say something on a certain thread. So......joined and haven't stopped hanging around since. Frank
I remember the big Cheater Slick artwork from the homepage(?). Also the articles/columns from guys like C9. I didn't know what to make of the message board when it first appeared so I never joined. All those "words' without pix made my head hurt. I had a hard drive crash and kinda forgot about the whole deal until the haunting words "jalopy journal" came back into my head one night. I Googled it and WOW! had this place changed. Ryan and this site have really changed my whole automotive deal. I never did care about how shiny a ride was nor how much it cost to build. But, for a long while my, friends were building mega dollar rides while I still thought that flat black WAS a finished color and that flatheads and early Hemi's could really be driven everyday. Everyone figured I was just wacky for thinking that stuff... but this place proves it wasn't just me with a "weird" taste for homebuilt traditional rods.
Yeah, grabbed me too. I've got it on a file somewhere! About the turn of the century I started lurking and the JJ was indeed stagnant. Ryan's build of the 38 didn't seem to progress online much. Then again, neither is my sloper now!
Well, I can't remember the date when I found this site but I also was lurking off and on for the last 6 years and finally decided to join and immediately got hammered but that's life in the fast lane. There is a world of information and history here and that's what makes it for me and I have also met many new friends in Austin and plan on many more trips there and hope to make Mokan next year.
I first signed up here in late 2000.At that time it appeared to me some guys here where more interested in being internet tough guys suffering from drug induced hallucinations than talking about on topic stuff. No one was a wise *** to me but I drifted off.Came back about 4 years ago and find this place to be full of talented builders with lots of great advice.I think it was that way all along but I was distracted by trash talking.Just my opinion
I joined during the "flame war" with the RRT, about whitewalls, anyone remember when that was? I was under a different name then and drifted away because of all the posers posting about cuffs and pompadors Checked in from time to time and rejoined after the place matured a lot. Now we have an excellant community of like minded people without (usually) all the drama. I'm on here several times a day and have made some great connections through this place. Thanks to Ryan and all the other behind the scene guys that keep this going.
