The number was usually the member's number. Some clubs actually put the members name or nickname on the plaque. There are a couple of examples on this page ...

    Customized Plaques

From what I understand, some of the early racing club plaques that had numbers on their plaques were not the members number, but were based on how fast the car was. If a member had the fastest car in the club, they got to run the plaque with the Number 1 on their car.

My favorite was in an old guy's barn. I did not get a PIC, but in the '50s, he was a member of a club called the "Night Crawlers," based around Delaware, Ohio.

A truck driver that comes into work all the time gave this to me. He lives in the city of Wayne, Michigan. Said it was hangin on the wall of his garage when he bought the place 20+ years ago. Was selling the house and moving. He figured it would be better off in my hands.

Prince George, BC Canada Blacktoppers. founded 1955 by Barry Watson,
still driving a chopped '50 Merc all these years later. The club had several
US Air Force guys as members, as there was a Dew Line radar base near our
city. These are NOS jacket patches, never sewn on.

We are happy with the plaques that Alliance Vendor OBrien Truckers did for us! They were easy to work with. Jackets are being stitched as we speak.
