CC's and Compression Ratios ???

  1. I've got a 9-1 sbc currently running 76 cc heads that were shaved 30 thousands. I know were some camel hump 64 cc heads are but they have been shaved down to a 53 cc chamber.
    What would my 9-1 act like with the 53 cc heads, compression ratio please ?

    Giving up the size of your SBC would be a big help.

    Ballpark without knowing the engine size I'd say you're looking at about 10.5:1 or 11:1 now.

    On a 350 dropping 20ccs of chamber size is going to bump the compression by about 2 full points.
     
  3. yes it's a 350, so with a 492 lift cam would there be any other problems with valve contact ?

    The valves will move closer to the piston when using heads with a shallower chamber. Put a straightedge across the chamber and measure how deep the valves are on both sets of heads to see how much closer they're going to be to the piston.

    Might not hurt to check for clearance using a little modeling clay on top of the piston before you button it all up. Put the head gasket you're going to use on the block and just snug down the head lightly. If you're running a hydraulic cam you'll need some solid checking lifters or some hydraulics packed with aluminum foil to make 'em solid.

    Honestly nowadays I wouldn't want an 11:1 engine for running around on the highway, the premium fuel available these days isn't good enough for a compression ratio that high.
     
  5. I agree about the compression ratio being high for a normal driver, was hoping maybe it would be around a more friendly 10-1.
