Still Have this Trophy Pop's mechanic of the year.... the clock still works. 44 years later. Cool........
Ive been scrambling thru my pops stuff and came across a pile of old super 8 film and there is some great stuff on the wenzel car at indy...rolling into the staging lages all the way thru burnout....some neat 60's indy .Just watched them at the toyo race at the grove..
Thanks - Thats just what i'm lookin for for my tribute car!! Will look them up! Hadnt heard that they were being made again. the old 900/950x15 7" stocker cheaters!! Thats what we ran - also used the Firestone Drag 500s and the Goodyear dots too!! Thanks
Marciann looks like Larry in drag, quite a resemblance!! The earlier Jenkins ad with the Preston-Lawrence '57 wagon reminded me of the relationship with the Wheatley Bros. I am sure this is the same car which they called "Heartbreaker Too".
We ran em 3 abreast at Magnolia Drags, Ohio till about 66 or 67. Of course there was Dragway 42 that always advertised itself as "the worlds only 4 lane dragstrip"! But that was a little different. It was 2 full 2-lane dragstrips side by side with guardrails inbetween. Never 3 or 4 cars running for one win light!! Ahhh! the "good old days" ???
not trying to be obvious, but have you tryed Stahls? about a year ago ago I was looking for those decals myself. my wife called stahls to see if by any chance they had any of those decals for sale. The lady on the other end sayed that they still had some, but if I recall they wanted $50.00 apeice! (I decided that since I had hooker fenderwells, for that price I could have "HOOKER HEADERS" lettered in paint across the front fenders! Funny thing, although I wouldnt pay that much for those decals, I had no problem paying $61.00 for a supposedly original 1969 WINTERNATIONALS POMONA "T" trophydecal for the windshield of my 56) go figure.
Be glad you only lost a phone number-I am losing my memory. Did I owe you some pix? I have a lot but have not figured out how to post them. My phone is 703 509-0762
Hate to be one to fuel rumor mills(not really) but sources have Larry Lombardo eyeing possible return to NHRA Prostock racing in limited 2010 schedule with major sponsor and mega horsepower supplier underhood........... horses mouth.
Thanks for posting, Bob. I really like that Pontiac Catalina. It really is (to me) look-wise representative of that very cool era. Regards, Pete
talking about OLDSMOBILES . anyone remember the WORRELL BROS. JACK&KEN ? i think they had an OLDS. or two ; back in THE DAY. looking for pictures. thanks JAKE
Roger, which event does the article with Bechtel beating Larson refer to? Always was a big fan of Lombardo's 61 after watching it run at the Nationals in 68. Other than your super tuning I suppose I would like to know more particulars about the engine and drivetrain on that strong running car. It was pretty dominant in class.-Jim
Yep, its in Schyulkill Haven Pa, car is being restored to race nostalgia... Its actually the last motor my dad freshened...how fitting. Motor was in rough shape!!
Interesting about Lombardo's "Buckshot"! I called Stahl this evening and they DO have the Total Tuned stickers, so I grabbed a pair of those, and they are checking to see if they have the even rarer Stahl/Moroso stickers. You guys won't believe how the "In-Bomber" is coming along. I don't want to give any details out just yet, but I'm working on something else NHRA Jr. Stock related that would be really cool if I get it, but we'll have to see how that goes! -Dean
Hi Jim, i'll attach a super stock & drag Illustrated article that has the basis of what the car was at the time... When i found it and read it i was suprised that racers would "share" anything related to the cars performance... I asked pop if it was accurate and he said it was.. Wonder if Dave Lebrun will tell me the cam he's running in the L&L machine A/S camaro in 2009 !!!Those guys rule!!! As for the bechtel/larson race... i'll find out. I found the clip and thought it was cool...Bruce has a get together at his place every year w/ all the old cars and a show as well...
Ok Folks, heres some names i think are absent and would love to see pictures of...any and all . Scott Reider George Weiler Phil Cambria Tom Hiester Tex Miller anything out there????
Roger, thanks for the article. As to the Bechtel Larson don't go to a whole bunch of effort. I have a friend that gushes about the Larsen/Costilou Cobra. I have reminded him that a solid axle Corvette (Ernie Dutre) put him on the trailer at the 65 Winter Nats. Another solid axle win would be another "gotcha"-thanks Jim
How aout Barry Bean ?? i just read a clip stating he was on his class' 21 consecutive win...are you kidding me?? says it was an olds 442. Anything on Tom Kidd ?? How about Albert DaDamio??? Trautman &Nugent???? Found some more on Skip Bechtel....apparently the Jenkins thing was heating up at this point...
While we are throwing out names here are some from the Ottawa, ON area, Rick Jones and Frank Cantusci, both ran stockers in the 60's 70's, then went to SS, Henry.
Looks like we're coming up on 200 pages of this remarkable thread. Kudos to Bill Cole (Colesy) who started it all -- and all of you who have helped sustain it. Its been a real (pardon the cliché) blast from the past!
