I've been keeping a close watch on dragrace central & classracer.com for Stock Indy results and with all the talk about the Ford Factory CJs and the Dodge Challengers and some guys sandbagging and some destroying the index, I found this old article from the 1971 Spring Nationals kind of amusing. This time the "Little Guy" prevails over the factory racer! Things haven't changed much in 30 some years.
And again at the NHRA Supernationals at Ontario Motor Speedway in 1971. This time it was a couple of old Chevies beating up on the factory team. I think the Boertmans won more than they lost though in those couple of years!
Steve, Frank Cottone = Land of N.E.D., Division 1. Oh yes, congratulations on the 200th page everyone! Pete
Colesy, there's a lot more "back story" to that saga than is suggested in the write-up. Even today, almost 40 years later, I'm not willing to let the entire cat out of the bag because too many of the major players are still alive but...the driver of the '55 Bel Air in that picture was Paul Dilcher, not his partner Keith Berg. Hedworth built the motors for both cars and other pictures show the similarity of the paint schemes. Paul and Val were/are close friends and there was a lot more riding on that race than money and a trophy. c
Geeze Chuck, talk about leaving us hanging!! This sounds like Anderson Cooper or Mike Wallace type material. Your post here should keep folks coming back to this thread for at least the next 15 years or so. Thanks for giving us the inside skinny even if it can't all be told.
How about Robert Harshbarger Div3 winner of 66 Spring Nationals at Bristol Tenn 1961 Pontiac Station Wagon L/S beat Roger Aho on a hole shot old-old timer

The picture from Ontario of the stock final, Dilcher vs Hedworth was 1971 not 1972. They were the final pre 1960's cars to go down a NHRA National event in Stock Eliminator.
Steve, Don't know how I could have missed this name ,but one of the hardest racers to compete against at any age,and still hanging in there and racing----Al Corda '64 Plymouth. He was Division 1 in the 70's but now winters in Phoneix ans owns Rockfalls Raceway and lives in Wisconsin. Shame on me for forgetting him. Please add his name. Dom

So far on Ramon Lowe we have these three Pontiacs. Any of our California Crew know if he had any other race cars?
Yea Joe, that would be nice -- there are about twenty five Pontiacs on our ever-expanding LIST. By the way guys -- all of the (requested) additions and/or corrections to our Junior Stock LIST have now been made. VIEW it HERE ... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showpost.php?p=4295039&postcount=3963
That's a fantastic compilation Steve! I can think of a number of note who have not been included, but for now will only volunteer one together with a story. Back in the mid 60's our local track in addition to Cayuga was Mohawk dragway at Deseronto ON. In 65 or 66 they held a big event with large cash payouts in all eliminators. Stock eliminator was something like $100 or it might have been as much as $500 --I can't remember, but all us local hot dogs had the money spent before we even got to the track. During the afternoon competition, a dark green, full size chevy that no one had previously paid any attention to, began to stand out. It ran G/S and had no lettering except for a small " Time Machine" on the rear deck lid. When the dust had cleared (a trademark of Mohawk) the Time Machine, on it's tow bar headed out the gate behind a similar tow car and it's driver had stock eliminator money in his pocket. We locals shook our heads in the dusty air and muttered to ourselves "cheater" . We had never heard of the driver before but he became well known a couple of years later. Dick Arons! If you could add Dick and his 65 Chevy to the list in your next update, it would be appreciated. One other change. Bill Morrison was in Division 1. Thanks
Jim Stewarts KA-Boob-EE 409 car...(where did these car names come from...good lord!!) at maple grove..
Some clips and ads..... Someone have photo's of this Barry Bean???Division one regular....seen listed as a chevy and an oldsmobile442... This clip has him winning 42 out of 44 races back to back years......wow!
