How do you put vintage plates on your ride in Washington state?Anybody know how much it costs? Thanks.
First fine YOM plate, then off to the dmv. Early plates were YOM. the later plates covered different years and will need the correct or reproduction metal tab or sticker. I think It cost me about $250, that was with filing the title transfer. Plus I had the plates( really only need one) make sure you read the rules when running vintage plates. Not all DMV agencies are savy when it comes to asigning the plates to the car. The gal at a agency in Lakewood had no clue, and wanted me to pay for the ugly collect vehicle plates. If they don't know tell them to ask someone. The person I dealt with was a real pain in the ass. It's not hard to run them and the the price is fair.
I think the last one I did cost me $150 to $200 to register but it might have been as high as $250.. The folks in Covington as good to work with, I have done two cars so far and will be doing my 31 in the coming weeks now that I have a plate for it
The goofy broad I talked to at the DMV claimed the YOM plate had to be "restored".So get your cans of green 'n white spray paint?
some of them really have no clue on what is correct or not, my 49 and 59 plates are OG plates while my 62 plates are restored. I think they want you to have plates that are readable at least. Like I said, if they try to tell you anything like they need to be restored have them look up the law or code. Really some don't know what to do unless it's a new Honda or Lexus and just need to issue new plates .
If you already have the vehicle licensed, it will cost $50.00 plus the DMV agency fee. If the tabs have expired it will cost the price of the tabs also, around $90.00 total. You must bring in your vintage plates (you only need one) when transfering. If it's a new title, or hasn't been licensed in years, see the above posts. Like the posts above said, read the rules first, you may not like the restrictions that come with collector plates
From the dol site. http://www.dol.wa.gov/vehicleregistration/sprestored.html All that showed up in the search (not all pertain to the plates) http://www.dol.wa.gov/search.html?c...11;NB:1&ie=ISO-8859-1&q=antique&sa=Search#747 Note= Painting the yom plates to match the colors of the vehicle is highly frowned upon. Some of the smaller off the beaten path Counties could be sitting on a gold mile if they discovered a stash of old plates in the back room or attic of the county courthouse. In the mid 60's and earlier each county was issued the first letter of the plate to signify that county. A = King county B = Pierce C = Spokane D = Clark (I think) E = Yakima on down to Z for Klickitat (Goldendale) Salesmen often bought their plates in the county they did business in so that their car appeared to be a local car and not an outsider. My dad was always looking at a car's plate and telling me what county it was out of. That said, if you want to be truly authentic you would need the proper letter plates for your county. Probably only the old farts would pick up on it but it be one of the things that make it correct. <input id="gwProxy" type="hidden"><!--Session data--><input onclick="jsCall();" id="jsProxy" type="hidden">
Great thread ! Just got my 49 panel home and want to keep the 63 stamped plates on there. I've heard you can't use the plates that were on the car if they have expired, which makes no sence nor is it noted on the DOL site. anyone heard that ?
the gals at the Puyallup office on East Main were very helpful it did cost me more than a couple hundred bucks but that included title transfer, standard registration and then the yom registration (equipment) cost btw, the correct yom plates for a '49 panel will be '49 not '63
The legal defintion of a restored plate reads something like one that is made to be legible, been there done that, checked out the WAC
Good to hear, I figured the hassle of finding 49 plates would not be worth my time ? Since I have to transfer title now. Having brand new no raised letters/numbers that would be a big deal as in it would suck. I'm O.K. with the 63 plates since I'd be going with a sixties theme anyway. Maybe I'll check craigslist and see if anybody has 49 plates ? just for kicks
Also know the laws and keep a printed copy of them with you just incase you run into the BFE police and they dont know what is up Typically i have to inform them of 6 or so laws on every stop
Oh like ................A restored license plate is a Washington-issued license plate that was designed for use in the year of the vehicles manufacture. The restored license plate may be used on an antique or collector vehicle instead of a standard license plate or so ..............I will find a 49 plate or go with whatever crap they hand me. Sorry Paul I was not paying attention in class Got it !
