I finished the paint so now I can put the windows back in. I need to save the $$$ for a 1 piece front window but I will start with the rear window. It is the pinchweld type. I have the basic idea on how to do it: Put the new gasget on the window. Wrap a nylon cord in the groove, put the window in the hole and while someone gently pushes from the outside pull the cord from the inside. My questions: Lube? yes or no? Do I need any kind of sealer? or is the new gasget sufficient? Where do I start? top or bottom of the window? Any other tips or ideas would be appreciated. Thanks, Todd
i lube them with a little dish soap , and no sealer because i'd make a mess..and i think i'm doing good just getting it in without breaking it i start at the top , it's easier for me to pull down on the rope than up
I would bed the windshield side as well as the flange side with a sealant. Not a lot, something that will set up with time and become fairly rigid. Then use a non silicone lube on the gl*** rubber. It also makes a difference if you start at the top or bottom. depending on the vehicle. Don't push the rope down to deep in the bedding or alot of clean up will ruin your day. But at least look on the bright side, your ready to put it in, instead of taking it out. ha!
Fine yourself some 3/16" cotton rope. I've found that this works the best. Them wrap it in the weatherstrip channel twice. The first lap will seat the weatherstrip and the second will seat it. Make sure you use the dish soap on the rope and weatherstrip. Them have one person put pressure on the outside of the gl*** while you pull the rope from the inside. I've done this for years and have had very little trouble.
I always did it from the front. Soapy water in a squirt bottle. Slip the rubber over the bottom edge of the widow lip and pull the cord around to the top. But that depends on the car. You didn't mention what car you are working on????
Hey Todd, Another trick is to soak the gasket in super hot water BEFORE you try puting it over the gl***. Some gaskets are kinda hard and you're gonna need all the help you can get to pull the window & gasket into the opening. Use the soap and twine number, but if you're working alone, be sure to use some low-tack tape, and tape the gl*** to the body, to keep the window from ''jumpin' ship", if the gl*** popps outa the gasket, whyle you're inside pullin' it home. Wow! are you going with stainless trim? if you plan on driving it, you'll probably wish it was sealed. if you seal it you don't want GoJo
