Is this good advice? Instead of removing the third member to change diff lube, remove the bottom stud and replace it with a bolt? Then whenever fluid gets changed, just remove the bolt and the bolt hole will double as a drain hole.
Using a stud as a drain won't get all the lube out of your housing, especially the stuff on the bottom where the shavings are. Mine has a big lug in the very bottom of the housing you take out with a big allen wrench. I pulled my pumkin not too long ago, and there is still enough lube in the bottom I should pull the drain plug out.
I always make a drain plug in the bottom of my 9 inch housing if there is not one. I try to use 57-58-59 housings ( they are a drain plug from the factory ). The method you describe will work
i guess it would work , but you would have to weld a nut inside the housing for the bolt to screw into. then also use some sealer on it. i think as long as you have it apart to weld you might as well just add a drain plug..there was a recent tech on this http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=394284&highlight=filler i'm doing this right now to an 8" rear
Yep.....best way......go with a 3/4 or at least 1/2 NPT plug with a magnetic insert in it.....Drill and tap hole in bottom of housing.......that way.....you can pull the plug! Or.....if your into the gizmo-ness of it all.....get one of those Fram quick oil change kits with the br*** fitting and just mount the magnet in the bottom of the housing..........Good medicine!
