The new issue of Rod & Kulture may not be at the news stands yet, but, I would think any day now.

  4. Hey Rusty Gem,
My Aunt and her boyfriends took me to all of these places as a young cruiser, She's 59 now(& would kill me if she knew that I posted this). I went to Harvey's with her on "Her Car Dates",cause I was thought to be great birth control :D that was 67-68.

My dad had a brand spankin new 68 Firebiird 400. We hit em all as kids, that way he didn't have to take us out of the car;). Henry's,2 EE'S-Alhambra, Yankee Doodle,A&W-San Gabriel, Henry's, Bob's-Glendale , Bob's, Arthur's (Arnold's on Happy Days) Toluca Lake-Burbank Finally Harvey's on Firestone. Can't figure out why I liked Drive-Ins and Hot Rods:confused:.

We didn't do the Hawthorne area with Dad, but my aunt's boyfriends took her street racing and wherever she went I had to go. The carhops always thought that she was a teenaged mom:rolleyes:. The boy friends knew better.....[/QUOTE]

59 sounds right. I'll be 59 in Oct. Gardena HS Grad. '68. doesn't sound so bad till I say 41 years ago, yikes:eek:

Our BIG cruise was Hawthorne-Whittier Blvd.- Hollywood, back to Hawthorne and home to Gardena, had to love those freeways, sometimes we would hit Van Nuys Blvd. Used to cruise the beaches in the summer time, Manhattan, Hermosa, Redondo, man those were the days, and nights.
Some times I miss So. Cal. but anymore I can stand about 3 days and then I'm ready to flee.
My mom thought Joe and I double dating would have the "b-control" effect, ask his daughter how that worked out:rolleyes::rolleyes:

I think a cruise that would include the beaches would be cool.
maybe breakfast at the Hawthorne Bob's, cruise the beaches all day and dinner at the Broiler. I'm lovin it:cool:
    later, Jim

Happy Days will be here again soon , Carol & I used to cruise Harvey's in the late 80's when we first got here in my old Green/ Purple flamed Deuce sedan , shot in the back ground of the Bruce Meyer 32 roadster R&C cover .The old place looks good already on the updated photos .

    Steve,
We want to reshoot that cover again with Bruce's Downey Deuce 3W, his Checkered Past Roadster, Carol's C-Dan placed where yours was, Perhaps yours or my Roadster where Robert's Kelsey'd Slicked Deuce was and we'd have to find a track roadster (perhaps the Neikamp?) where Barry's A-bone was.
Hey R&C Lee or Ganahl are ya listening???? It's almost built .......

    Kustom Mike,
Great Shots!!!!!! was there last night dropping off the paint for the COFFEE SHOP & DRIVE-IN letters, They're going to be the original dark blue-green as they were when 1st built in 1958. The lighter torquoise was from a studio repaint. We're going to the dark side:cool:.

    Sidebar Note here,
The FUND RAISER for HARBOR INTERFAITH has been altered as promissed. The event Saturday the 19th includes a soft bound book ($30.00 value)that has a cool story that you could even have your young hot rod/kustom kids read that includes the Broiler in its story line,
BIG BOY BURGER MEALS UP TO A FAMILY OF 4,(a $32.00 value),Which combined goes past the price of the DONATION entrance price, A HATCH (Music Style) poster ($8.00 value) and the event dash plaque. This is only for Charity and it is for a great cause,

Jim is graciously donating his premisses and would like to see as many people there as can make it.

Again, This IS NOT the GRAND OPENING, Just a FUND RAISER.
We are working on a "Free Cruise," so keep Saturday the 26th open;).
HAMBers keep intouch with me,cuz something right b4 the 19th may happen for you.;)

  9. Kev,

Things are looking good. Good to see the signage going up.

One question: will the "Broiler" signage have the dot over the "i"?

Looking forward to the Grand Opening!

We're working on the terazzo now, still dealing with getting that right, color coat is going on. Kitjchen is getting plumbed and set up.

Rock (Palos Verde Stone) wall is just beginning,Landscapers have just begun and curbs are being laid out (big changes in the parking capacity)
and the water line is being spliced into from across Firestone to feed this behemouth;).

    Chevy Girl Rox,
Thanks, looking forward to meeting ya when you're out here again.

Fantastic feature article, Kent! Thanks for putting Bob's and the Broiler in context. Folks who don't know are going to be amazed to learn that the Broiler's coming back. :) I delivered a copy to Jim the other day [big smile], and then went back to Autobooks today and bought more!

Wow! I worked in flooring for quite a few years and I've never seen a Terrazzo floor go down. I wasn't even sure if anybody still did them.

    Yes,
They still do em :D. We've been waiting for a week, The wildfires didn't help, two of the guys working on this floor were affected, so we in turn lost them. it has taken about 2 weeks to get em down and have the original repaired.

Hoping to see it done tomorrow;).

  20. Kev, I think it's almost about time to retitle this thread. What's happening is just too good to go on under the current thread title.......maybe "Harvey's Broiler reborn!"....??

Thanx for the lead on this Harveys article. It took a week but the 19th issue Rod & Kulture finally hit the local bookstore in Logan, Utah. And it is a great story with excellent photos and history. A big Kudos to you for bringing this decades long story towards it's final chapter, the ending that will be written in the next few weeks.

Or is it just a new beginning? I vote for the latter. Hope to meet you at the opening........

Thanks, I will try and do a follow-up for another issue.

By-the-way, I noticed you're into Bugs, I left a story concerning this particular bug below on this thread about Cruising Van Nuys Boulevard. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=353496&page=72

It's in 2 parts, you may get a kick out of it.

I'm a liquor sales rep and I have an account across from Johnnie's, so every week on my call day to my account, it was heartbreaking driving by and seeing the destruction.
Now I drive by every week and I'm on pins and needles to see the progress on the reconstruction. I can't wait for it to open! YAY!!
