Ertl Toys is up the road a piece as well as the field of dreams baseball diamond. " People will come Ray - poeple will come to play baseball" James Earl Jones "Hey - Is this heaven ? Shoeless Joe No its Iowa........ Ray"
yep - i know about the area attractions........but what about car shows there? nothing? cmon - there has to be something?!
Check at JP cycles in Anmosa They have a few shows. Also there is a motorcycle musem in Anamosa worth going to.
I live east of there and there use to be some cruises years ago. They had a pretty big following I think. I only hear about some cruises at an auto parts store now. I think they were on wed. or thurs. nites.
Go to a couple auto parts stores and ask those guys. You never know, you may get lucky. Also, you may have better luck in East Dubuque, just cross the bridge into Illinois. Not sure why I think that but I do...
not trying to hijack, but if anyone knows anything about the dubuque car club named the "slo pokes" or "slow pokes" please pm me. a friend wants some info.
No help here but I was going to a pals wedding in Janesville a few years back and he calls me on the cell him "Where you at?" Me "in Dubuque" him " I know your in the Buick ! But Wheere are you!?!?!?!"
thanks for the info guys - I never knew about that website Jalopy Jim - that is a good one! overall it just seems to be pretty non HAMB car guys around Dubuque then huh?
There was a young dude building bikes and some rat rods in Dubuque. He was at the Flying Eyeball Reunion a few years ago. Have not seen much of him since. Slo Pokes car club. I have heard and seen some pics. There is someone on the HAMB (I think) from Durand IL that has a roadster that belonged to one of the original members. I met a guy this summer that belonged to that club. He still owns his 32 five window and it is still a nice car. Very kool car.
My dad is from Cedar Rapids and he said that the Slo-Pokes out of Dubuque were THE car club in eastern Iowa in the 50's. Here are a couple of links to a Rod & Custom article about them. I think I have a newspaper article somewhere that I will try to find. I think it is about the Slo-Pokes FED and racing at Cordova Illinois with Don Gartlits. http://www.rodandcustommagazine.com/hotnews/0902rc_1934_ford_coupe_readers_rods/index.html http://www.rodandcustommagazine.com/hotnews/0902rc_1934_ford_coupe_readers_rods/photo_01.html
This old HAMB post has some drag photos of Slo-Pokes in Moline. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=356807&highlight=dubuque
