if i remember correctly, reading about it years ago:rolleyes:,the idea was to keep air out from under the car, creating a vacuum, therefore planting the car and rear tires.

Actually, it was to suck the car down to the track, for better traction

That's correct. Jim Hall also did it on one of his Chapparel's, and some F1 types tried it a few years after that. Outlawed due to possible consequences if the vacuum system failed. (in road racing and F1)

I never put the two names of Peter Dykes together; I was once a big speedway fan-Dykes, Jim Airey, Mauger, Briggs et al.

Here's a few from my Pops-in-Law that he found sorting out boxes of old slides. Most of them are old Hardtop races but he came across these and a couple more.

He couldn't remember the location but somewhere in Central Cal. Judging by the street cars I would guess around '61?

Anyone recognize them or where they are?

Very nice photos, agree it is in the early '60's, but don't recognize the track(s)..the bank behind the flathead digger suggests Carlsbad, but that's not central Calif...tracks there included Famosa, Santa Maria, Taft (which C.J Hart ran after Lions)...the tracks are not Famosa or Santa Maria, so maybe Taft...(I'm probably missing some of the early '60 Central Cal tracks)

    Thanks for posting!!

I'd totally give one of my walnuts for a Comet funny car!

  19. There was a truck like that in the junkyard here. It was a highway snowplow, but it was a regular cab. I'm guessing they swapped the cab for a Suburban body for a home away from home! Cool! That old Merc is ok too!

    Dean,
These look like Sol Stewart pictures from the 1966 Daytona/Spruce Creek meets.
