Day of the Drags, 1/8 mile, or 1/4 mile, WHAT DO YOU THINK?

Here's the deal... 1/8 is too short to have fun in a door slammer.

The reason tracks are going to 1/8 (I think) is that fewer cars break down, and they can run more cars in a day.

The other reason, they can't afford to resurface 1/4 mile, or don't have the safety setup for speeds over 200.

I went to Ardmore, and for all the junk that went down the track, 1/8 miles was long enough. I didn't think most of the cars were even going to keep running that long! (OK, I exagerate).

1/8 mile is fun for a Junior Fueler, but ****s for a door slammer.

  2. LuxBlue and I were talking about this at the bar earlier tonight. The shutdown area has been revised, it no longer curves at the end, and is now straightened out. There are 200mph cars out there now. Should be no concern on running out of room for anyone running at the DOTD event.

Good to hear, thanks, HC! I'm glad the new owners have upgraded the venue. It's a great piece of Texas, and I hope they bring the bridge back, it made for some great photo ops. Probably wouldn't sit too well with their insurance carrier, though..................

1/8 mile? Are we running rice burners with those scuba tanks under the hatch. Little River has logged millions of p***es with much faster cars than we will be running with drum brakes on the rear and none on the front. Be your own boss, hold it to the wood till you see God then brake.

Hey Hot Rod Bill - That means a full quarter mile of you looking at my tail lights. See you there!

The plan is to head back up to the drags on Sunday after I make my runs Saturday at the Texas mile. That is if I can hit my goals. But If the track is only running 1/8 mile I will probably just stay at the "Texas the mile". My 2 cents

Better not be sleeping on the line again. Regardless of what happens - It's going to be a lot of fun.

Ran Temple many a time with 3,800 lb car 9,20-30's 130 + and with drumb brakes-Never a problem and had laundry if needed -Its a safe track as far as I am concerned & like DW says its our responsibility to know our equiptment and abilitys. On the other hand Jonh Force may have stopping issues.

The really fast Outlaw racers such as ORSCA are running 1/8-mile. I was lightly involved with them through work, and asked the why.

A lot of studies have been done on where money is spent on race cars--specifically, wear and tear. It's cheaper in the long run for them to run 1/8-mile, as they get more p***es per season out of tires, clutches, etc.

But much more importantly, they've found that most crashes, and almost all serious crashes, occur between 1/8- and 1/4-mile. Speeds are considerably faster, velocity, inertia, lots and lots of rolling... kaboom.

They've also found that more cars oil down the track on the big end (parts breakage, thanks to higher rpm for longer periods of time). Obviously, there's also some correlation between blown motors and accidents.

From a spectator standpoint, 1/8-mile is more fun, because you're watching the line and the cars out to about the 320-foot mark, then you look up to the lights to see who one. It's not like you're watching the entire 1/4-mile race. Half the race you're watching tail lights and the time board. With 1/8-mile, you see the results a lot quicker.

Also, with 1/8-mile, they cycle the cars through a lot quicker on the starting line, so the action is faster.

The only thing 1/4-mile has going for it is that's what we're used to. We know a 9-second 1/4-mile time is hauling ***, but we're not sure if 5 seconds in the 1/8 is quick or not.
