Man I just got my new street rodder boy the more I read the more pissed I became .I know I have gotten older but the ads are in the middle of articles .It was great to read some new stuff but I think they should rename it street rod ads. After 25 plus years of suscribing to this shit Im through at 6 to 7 dollars a copy you would think they could write some better stuff to read but if success is measured in advertisers boy are they good . I must be sick I like car features not ads in the middle of them maybe the ads could be on a tear off section titled gold chain only !! I appreciate some of the ads but not every page damb !! Some tech would be nice .I get more usefull information here THANKS TERRY

    Terry,
if you subscribed at the NSRA Nats like I did you would be paying $10 per year and that is less than a buck per copy. 80 pages of advertising to 100 pages of editorial is not a bad ratio and the popularity with the advertisers is making sure that the mag stays around. We lost R & C before due to lack of interest by advertisers and it may happen again.
I subscribe to a large number of automotive magazines and the ones with less advertising invariably cost more. I just got a renewal offer from Road and Track--$16 for two years, and yes it has plenty of ads but it also has soem killer editorial stuff too.
I hated it when Steve started to runs ads in Rodders Journal but with a relatively small customer base it was the only way to keep a great publication on the market. His ad to editorial ratio is better than SR but the subscription price is a lot higher too.

    Hey,

Anymore, what I find is that 99% of the magazines in print today are nothing more than thinnly vailed products catalogs! Also, a number of the "tech'' articles are written for children, by children! Who the hell needs to be told how to correctly install floor mats? Those "tech'' articles usually feature , you guessed it, ways you can spend your money buying the very shit bein pimped in the magazine you covered the cost to print!

Don't yank me off with a cover photo of some shapely lass, standing in front of yet another red coloured ''cover car" and expect that I'll part with good money to cover the cost of a fucking products catalog! We ain't all sheep!

I only buy and pay for those magazines that I review PRIOR to purchase.

  4. I switched to HOT ROD--DELUXE. Shame Street Rodder is all about the ads anymore, they have some good stuff otherwise.

  5. as rooman suggested , get in on some of those great deals they offer...i'm getting both Street Rodder and Rod & Custom for $12 for one year. 50 cents an issue, that's cheaper than toilet paper

HELL YES! Or at least have the honesty to call it what it really is - a fucking products catalog!

  8. They should rename it Mustang II DIY Monthly. Anyone that promotes tech articles that advise you to attach your entire steering mechanism to sheet metal is to be avoided anyway.

If SRM were to go belly up, no one's would die from it. I dropped my subscription a few years ago and didn't suffer from withdrawl or the DTs. It felt good, like dumping an ugly, fat conniving GF.

  10. Exactly the reason I dumped my sub. back in the '90's; thought the ads were
excessive then. That and too many over-done street rods.....

I like street rodder, and rod and custom, both are great mags. They are also monthly mags(all the ads keep the price down for us). Garage, trj, hot rod deluxe, traditional rod and culture, and hop up(awsome mags too) seem to have less ads, but dont come in the mail every month. More like every other month, or every couple of months. Hop up was once a year. Maybe its more expensive to put one out every month, hense more ads, or maybe im just full of poo:D. I LIKE EM ALL SHORT,FAT,SKINNY, AND TALL...

You are complaining about a magazine called "STREET RODDER" on a forum that doesn't give a rats ass for 90% of the junk they do to those cars. Problem solved: only subscribe to a magazine that offers tech articles and editorial that applies to you and your interests.

I like the way Hot Rod Deluxe uses the models to model new parts. Kind of takes the sting out of being solicited.

As one of the poor bastards who sells a little piece of my soul everyday to design advertisements for a living, I can tell you first hand that it will only get worse before it finally kills the majority of print media. Any and all real profit for magazines and newspapers comes solely from revenue generated by advertising and not circulation. Somewhere along the line it changed hands and is only getting worse. So, get used to it and celebrate the existence of the HAMB where there is no advertising allowed... just one more reason I rely on this place to cleanse my soul every day.

Print material in general is an endangered species.

If they didn't have all those ads, we'd have no magazine at all.

It gives people a place to advertise, a place for me to glance at 100 different catalogs in one magazine, and *maybe* even get something from an article in there, even if it's just a diagram or some installation info.

Subscriptions/retail sales *maybe* pay for the printing cost of the issue. Ads generate profit and pay for the overhead.

I don't see why its so cool to hate that magazine. It's not like it'll ever be replaced if it goes out of business, might as well enjoy it while you have it.

There will never be another major car publilcation *period* launched again in america, and very likely never another major magazine of any type.

Look at an issue of car craft or others, how many people are on staff, maybe 2 or 3 writers?

Yeah, but at the end of the day, net, net if you're only getting two-three issues in a twelve month period you'd even care to read from cover to cover, wadda ya got?

At least toilet paper has utility from the first sheet to the last!

  20. Why can't I find new Hot Rod Deluxe, did they quit making them again? I think my last one is from a few months ago or more?

I got the September 09 issue and expect to get the November issue in short order. I see it everywhere. Best bet is Borders/Barnes & Noble or even your local shitty auto parts store (read: NOT Napa or CarQuest)

You can go back to the early 1960s and find letters to the editor in Hot Rod about there being too many ads, so people have been complaining about this forever. There are other people here more familiar with the magazine business, but from what I've heard that's actually not a bad ratio of ads to editorial content.

The HAMB - 294+ pages and the ads are by us,for us on another "page."
I still subscribe to the Rodders Journal. It's not "dated" and there's no blow in subscription cards.
    I hate those things...

without the ads where are you going to find all the billet parts to doll up your hoopty?

I don't buy it very often anymore, but picked up the latest issue. couldn't believe all the tasteless shit they advertise for people who have no clue.

Covell is still doing his pages, so it wasn't a total loss.

  28. That's why I cancelled my subscription 2 years ago. I read Rodders Journal, Hop Up, Garage, Car Culture deluxe and Rod and Custom. Rod and Custom is the only one with a lot of adds, but does not seem to have as many as Street Rodder. In my opinion still a very good mag though.

I had Street Rodder for a few years and dropped it . Too many mags and not what I really want to read . Last week I got a HEY we want you back crap from SR and the had a 3 year deal for like $24 and I turned it town !
Now about the ads , that is why you can get that mag for $10 a year ! Those ads pay for all the printing and shipping and more . So for a good mag that is dirt cheap I could be OK with the ads !
I kept my Hot Rod , Rod & Custom and Hemmings .
