I finally had an opportunity to make something better on my coupe that has been on the "redo" list for awhile; the column drop.

When I got the coupe together (the first time) I bolted the '40 stamped sheet metal "drop" to the model A drop and called it "good enough". It didn't look great, but it worked.

After the incident last October, let's just say it got bent up a little. And when I put the coupe back together this last spring, I was even less happy with it, since it looked ****ty and didn't hold the column very well anymore either.

Last week I went over to the s**** metal place a couple blocks from my work and bought a nice piece of 1/2" aluminum. This weekend I cut and gnawed a chunk out to look like a column drop. I used a 4" cutoff wheel, a 4" grinder, my drill press for the holes, and a LOT of filing with a couple files. I smoothed it up with some 50 grit and red scotchbrite 2" pads.

I think it came out pretty good.

Hand made with common hand tools, cool. But isn't how Li'l Jon got the whole "billet" thing started.

Had to pull your chain a bit, anytime a guy takes a chunk of metal and uses hand tools or hand held power tools to turn it into something good an useful is great in my book.

I'd throw some of that red paint on it. I really dislike most column drops, even the connecting rods etc.

  15. Sheesh, what's next? Baby blue paint everywhere and splash graphics? I suppose the HAMB-b-q will be all Perrier and filet mignon next year.

  25. When the ole man was building midgets he cobbled up all kinds of stuff out of aluminum. He just didn't refer to it as "billit"

That idler is looking good too. Funny seeing that poor chunk of armature laying the the background.
