Mantranga merc might be my all time favorite custom, although next month I might have a different answer..

And it may not be "the best" ever built, but you GOTTA give a big nod to the hirohata '51.. Although I'd like it 37% more with a 50 back window..

Jesse's 51 is up there, probly only because I think if I built one it would come out something like that.. (hopefully) ;)
Oz's merc is cool too in that way..

But the Ayala bros sure new how to chop one.. The battercourt car is how a custom mercury is supposed to look! Rulers.

Rick Dore built an Orange one a few years back that was sweet if it lost the wheels it had on it. He's a Billet wheel guy. Sweet Nadine has to be up there among the top somewhere but the Hirohata Merc set the standard for all others to follow. As for newly built cars EXK has some killer Mercs coming together right now.

The Bettencourt Merc, smooooooooooooth and round. Deep cut hood corners, must of had to alter the hinges? Filled in around the windows where the stainless trim would have went. Looks more like a 48 ! Filled in the ledge where the belt trim would have gone, right into the deck lid. Very nice fadeaways which curve around over the tail lights into the deck opening, the tail lights were great. Pontiac bumpers with Keyser guards , exhaust through the bullets. Spot lights through the door instead of the piller. Caddy side chrome thats down over the front wheel well. This Sled goes on forever. My pick for #1 MERCMADNESS.

I agree! I think it is impossible as well as unfair to try and pick "the best Merc ever" because there are so many that employ great ideas in different ways. It's all based on personal taste which, after all, is what this whole Kustom car thing is about. My favorite of all time is The Bettancourt Merc in the first Barris redo...before Zupan had it...it became too busy after that. Hirohata is very unique and in a class of it's own...beautiful car.

  17. 16 of your 27 posts have been in this thread....most of those have been (it would seem) to try & start some shit on here...Now, I don't know if that was the intention, but it sure seems that way.

I've always liked the Matranga Merc a ton. There are plenty of other great Mercs out there though.

Yeah that looks like the Dore car. Glad to see the wheel combo finally got changed. I think it may have changed ownership as well. I remember seeing it at auction for $150k a few years back.

As a side note why is it everone is gets so worked up over who likes what. There is no right or wrong answer to this. You like what you like, I like what I like. If every freakin Merc looked the same what fun would that be? But then I guess thats why I built a Cadillac instead. No one to campare to.

  24. Well, you beat me to it, but yes, exactly.

This is a very lame-ass thread. I say get rid of it. There are many other far more productive Merc threads on this site, including ones that discuss 'favorites.'

That's his 54 Merc behind it. All stock except for my bitch of a stepmom behind the wheel. She calls it "her" car. Good thing is we were at the Goodguys show at Atlanta Motor Speedway before my stepmom and I stopped talking so I got to take it around the speedway wide open. I dogged the shit out of it while she drove it around the inner apron! Felt good! Kiss my big ass Barbara!!!!!!!!

I have a few that I like best... in no particular order.

    Jimmy Summers 1940 Mercury

Westergard/Bertolucci built Buddy Ohanesian 1940 Mercury

    Nick Matranga Mercury by Barris

Bettancourt Merc as how the Ayala Brothers had finished it in lime gold

Same car but then redone by Barris

Sam Barris 1940 Mercury Convertible... nothing really special... just a perfect sample of the perfect early style 1940 Mercury custom.

    Sam Barris 1949 Mercury

Bob Hirohata Mercury by Barris... Like said before in its own league...

Terri Hegman's 1951 Mercury. If you look up "perfection" in the dictionary... and if they had pictures to go with it. This car would be pictured!

Im not 100% sure about the story of the build unless the man himself (jesse james) corrects this, but from what ive read and herd is that He was introduced to austin Texas by his wife, then he needed a place to work on his Mercury that he got out there. Then thats where he found Austin Speed Shop. I beleive that he and the other members of Austin put in alot of work 2gether. And Thats how he became co-owner. Plus he just loves Austin Tx.

The Hirohata. The legend and history alone make the car an icon without even mentioning that it is a gorgeous creation from every angle.
