During initial mock-up my truck was not channeled,,,and now it is. When I set my motor and intake and I realized with the carbs and air cleaners bolted to my intake the entire setup is about 2" below the top of my front winshield. So my question is,,, how tall can my engine and intake be before the cops start giving my a bunch of HELL??

    Thanks

  2. I've seen some crazy **** running around. Mostly blowers with monster injectors on top. I'm sure there are rules. But I am also sure the cop would have to research the vehicle code to find it.

The best way to keep from being stopped is to drive carefully and considerately and avoid gross speeding.

Went through a sobriety check the other evening in my roadster. Cop asked me if I drive in the rain. I said "no." He said "Right answer. If you had said yes I would have written you up for no wiper."

At***ude is 90%. If stopped, be polite.

  4. Mines's not channeled but my stuff still sticks up over the cowl. Another 6 inches lower and it would be close to the same...

I know in Minn. any thing above the bottom of the windshield is obstructive vision, here in Nevada not too much of a problem check with your local yoakles.

Yep, the law is some combo of Forward, Vision, Obstructed, View, Limited.
You will have to check your local codes, of course.
Drove an O/T tunnel-rammed car for years. Even got a couple OWA (Officers With At***ude) tickets, but that was never part of it. Face it, you are building something that is illegal. You may or may not get popped. Sometimes you will get a ticket for a high school t***le, other times, you can see some chick driving around with 3 inch crystals hanging off the mirror, throwing rainbows into your car and blinding you, and nothing happens.

I don't know about Cal. but in NY as long as it doesn't obstruct your view to the other side of the car you should be fine. I've got a bud around here with a 572 cu. in. 871 blower in a 64 Chevelle. There's no way in hell you can see the right side of the car from the drivers seat and afaik he hasn't been bothered at all by the law.

Like others said, its all about your additude and how you drive. When I was in high school I drove my 69 chevy truck with straite headers every day and only got popped for no light on my license plate and anouther time for a brake light out, they didnt say a word about it being loud.

I received a ticket for "Obstructed Vision" with my high school convertible back in 1982 at spring break Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The same stop also resulted in a "Bumper Height" ticket.

I wasn't revving the engine or burning the tires or anything else. Just cruising the strip.

Fact is, there just happened to be a cop present who was in the mood to give someone trouble, and had probably been irked by others before I ever p***ed by.

I think it completely depends on where you go, what you do and how unlucky you get.

    Good luck.

If you got a ticket at Spring Break in Ft Lauderdale, be glad that's all that happened.

Here in MD they p***ed a law that basically makes any kind of scoop or stack that sticks through the hood illegal, and even before that, not having a hood was illegal. I haven't heard if they're enforcing it yet, but I believe that they can tow and impound the car. OTOH, there's a local guy with a GTO with 2 blowers stacked on top of each other (the thing is tall enough that it just might have a problem getting through some garage doors) and I don't know that he's ever had a problem.

In Kansas, it would be driving with obstructed vision, unsafe equipment, or something like that, depending on how old you are and what you drive.

grey hair and cars from the 60's get away with straightup drag slicks, open headers, and 5%tint.

punks in ricers get towed for parking too far from the curb.

I will post a photo tomorrow. AND NO it wont fit in my garage anymore, but that is not because of the intake my rear tires are too wide and all I have is a one car garage. I have always dirven crazy *** cars that were in no way legal for the road in Ca, but I do pull off the clean cut white boy thing pretty well when I get pulled over, I cover my tats and say yes sir, Im sorry sir, no I didnt know that sir..... But I have never had a hood less 28 truck with a BMW V12 tunnel ram and dual 4bbl Holleys. I will post photos tomorrow it is one nasty nasty truck

I drove this car over 2500 miles to the Hot Rod Reunion in Bowling Green & back home with no h***el from the cops anywhere. The scoop is the same height as the roof.

True story!!! There was more than one story that came out of that week, but it was cool to drive an old convertible 24 hours to get there.

    Oh to be young again...

The cops leave me alone. I was driving next to a local Sgt. blowing fire out the exhaust pipes. He waved and went on. I was pulled over in G****vine TX but he wanted to see the car. But its a ***** seeing around all that stuff. I have to be twice as aware in the coupe. If you go big you have to give somewhere.

He pretty well told it like it is in all 50 states. Yes in some areas as long as you don't make an *** out of yourself with your vehicle you can get away with it.
If you check your state vehicle codes you will no doubt find the laws on the books that state that you can't have obstructed vision to the front of the vehicle.
In the state of Washington it reads this way
    <table border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" width="100%"><tbody><tr><td valign="bottom">RCW 46.37.410

Windshields required, exception &#8212; Must be unobstructed and equipped with wipers.

    </td> <td align="right" nowrap="nowrap" valign="top">
</td> </tr> </tbody></table> (1) All motor vehicles operated on the public highways of this state shall be equipped with a front windshield manufactured of safety glazing materials for use in motor vehicles in accordance with RCW 46.37.430, except, however, on such vehicles not so equipped or where windshields are not in use, the operators of such vehicles shall wear gl***es, goggles, or face shields pursuant to RCW 46.37.530(1)(b).

    (2) No person shall drive any motor vehicle with any sign, poster, or other nontransparent material upon the front windshield, side wings, or side or rear windows of such vehicle which obstructs the driver's clear view of the highway or any intersecting highway.

    (3) The windshield on every motor vehicle shall be equipped with a device for cleaning rain, snow, or other moisture from the windshield, which device shall be so constructed as to be controlled or operated by the driver of the vehicle. After January 1, 1938, it shall be unlawful for any person to operate a new motor vehicle first sold or delivered after that date which is not equipped with such device or devices in good working order capable of cleaning the windshield thereof over two separate arcs, one each on the left and right side of the windshield, each capable of cleaning a surface of not less than one hundred twenty square inches, or other device or devices capable of accomplishing substantially the same result.

    (4) Every windshield wiper upon a motor vehicle shall be maintained in good working order.

If the local law enforcement folks view the law as not driving down the road with something stuck on the windshield it's self you might get by but if they read it as unobstructed forward vision things could get bad in a hurry.

My past experience and that of a lot of the others here says that if the whole package looks right and the setup on top of the engine blends with the rest of the car and doesn't appear exaggerated to an extent that it draws undo attention you can get away with it. Go too far and usually you won't get too far without being pulled over.

Go big or go home. As long as you drive like a sensible adult in town and around residential areas you should be good.

The BMW uses ignition pickups on the crank 2 of them 30deg apart the engine runs as if it were two seperate inline 6 cyl engines. So what I am doing is running 2 MSD 6AL boxes one for each set of six. The MSD boxes will controll timing retard and I had a machine shop modify both distributors so I have manual advance controll, and thats about it. So basicall my V12 is two inline sixes running 30deg apart
