Where are all the '28-'29 Model A's?

in the book 'the birth of hot rodding, the story of the dry lakes era' (robert ganat) there is NOT ONE single 30/31 A model pictured, all 28/29s and thirty twos. really wierd. Maybe they were uncool for some reason.i reckon they rock. We call them 'improved As' down here.

 

You are just about right on the counts there. Here's a couple pics of the 2 that are driveable. I've had the Coupe on the road since 1990. The PU is a rebuilt old rod from the 60's.

 

Here's my 29 and yes they are tiny cars.

 

I have a '29 or '29 Sport Coupe body. How do I tell the difference?

I also have a '29 Roadster in my garage. I'm sure they're around but like mine, which has languished in a garage since '84, are hidden from view.

My dad bought it in '84, drove it a summer and tore it down. I moved it in peices to my garage following my father's passing.

I think they're out there but like so many hidden treasures, they're awaiting a new generation to discover and mine them!

29 Special Coupe

 

Over the years I've found far more 30-31's than 28-29's, and like the look of the 30-31 in most body styles, but a chopped '28-29 Tudor is tough to beat.

 

I've got a 29 Sedan, been indecisive on using 32 rails or my stock A frame.

 

They hide and then they are found only to be hidden again.

 

Model As of every kind are everywhere. There is no secret society of 28-29 Coupe collectors or any other Model A body style. They are truly the most common hotrods ever. Any body, any style, any where, the Model A is the king, at least in numbers.

 

I've got a 3" chopped '29 Coupe ready to be put on the frame (w/ a 400 Pontiac) and a 90% rust free 95% complete '28 Tudor sitting in the barn for later.

 

I agree from looking thru old rod mags that you either see a '28-29 (and they always seem to be called '29's, tho some could be '28s) or you see '32's. Could it be that, the '29's got a nod for lightness and smaller size, and if you wanted a slightly bigger body, like the 30-31's, you just jumped on up to a Deuce?

In more recent times, when we see more 30-31's as rods, I think the scarcity and high cost of '32's has been what has pulled more 30-31's in to become rods, as they are the closest next cousin to the '32.

I have always thought that among restorers and Model A guys, the 30-31's get the nod, with favorites being the '31 deluxe roadsters and phaetons, also Victoria's. With rodders, at least in earlier days, the 28-29's got the nod.

I just finished my 29 roadster ---built it because I had collected tons of parts over the years and figured it was as good as time as ever to do it-- I've got other projects needing to get done,so now this one is---FOR SALE. A couple of pics--Kiwi Kev did the metal work--Rat Bone did the interior---I pretty much did the rest.

I've got a '29 sedan sitting in the garage waiting for 2 other projects to get some work done to them, then I can start on it.

I have an original 29 Pk Up,(body wise) running a B modified. Presently the crank is between here (USVI) and Pa. to be drilled. I an also building a 29 Hot rod from parts I have gathered. Its gona run a 01 AMC 2.5 4 banger/5sp 65 Chevy Van dropped axle front and same rear from the van. Down here you use what you got or can get, and it ain't much. Been waiting 3 months just for gaskets and seals. Hope to have her on the road by fall. Winter here is 85/ summer is 95 so we can build all year. Ice man

 

This is my roadster pick up that i drove for three years.



It has become a tudor over the winter. It's much further along now, but not quite finished.



I will update my avatar when it is down off the jack stands and gets a bath.

I've got a 1929 coupster on a Model A frame.

 

I've got one and a half! One 28 Special coupe and one parts car. Maybe someday I'll get em both together.

 

someone dumped this one in my driveway, i dont dare drive it cuz it doesnt have disc brakes or a mustangII frontend. ive been hauling it away piece by piece. i just hauled off 5" of the roofline

My uncle has a 28 sedan with 30-31 fenders on it. Great combo in my opinion, you got the 28 cowl with the bigger, fuller fenders. Something you don't notice unless you REALLY know your A's. I can't think of any problems that he had fitting them together, either.
