    Here is another shot of the rod posted by novatattoo. Thanks for posting that image and getting me onto this site!! This is the same car a little later with the finned heads on the full race engine, the motorcycle fenders, and my Grandpa backing it down the driveway......

    I have no idea how to post this as a picture in this frame. If someone would like to manage to do it it's fine with me, Thanks

    Training mishap. No aircraft on the foredeck. Small superstructure (at right) and crash barrier abeam superstructure indicates a smaller training aircraft carrier, possibly a "jeep" carrier. Shell casing ejector slots on wing undersides are sealed so no guns installed. Note splinters from prop chewing into the wooden decking.

    My first car 1952 Plymouth flathead six and three speed overdrive. My dad bought it for me for $10 in 1965 because the junk yard didn't pick it up for a customer. One new rod bearing and it was on the way to Beeline Dragway. Where i won my class and i still have the trophy! Thanks Dad!

    I felt the same way...Then I thought a positive spin would be that now their posted for all the world to see/enjoy....alot better place to be other than just trash in the back of a junkyard van

    alcohol burning flathead. 7 coats black lacquer, red leatherette

    In one shot it shows the reason why WWII was almost lost in the Pacific and also why it was won.

    I can't tell from this angle.... is that a Corsair? If it is, I was just watching a show about it on the History Channel and saw a scene very similar to this one. Seems they had a lot of problems when they were first testing them for carrier landings (nose was too long and pilots couldn't see the deck) and ended up wrecking a few before the Navy gave up on them. They were confined to ground bases where the Marines made history with them. It took the British Navy to figure out how to operate them off carriers, coming in on a curving final approach where the deck was visible until the last moment and the director on the flight deck was visible the whole time in the "crook" of the wing. Another example of how the Brits took a fresh look at one of our planes and helped it to achieve greatness (the other being how they pulled an engine swap with the P-51 Mustang, yanking the Allison and stuffing in a Royce-Merlin...... hot rodding in the sky!).

    Very true, the P-51 design is also one that the Poms rejected, the US picked it up and ran with it!
    It is indeed a Corsair, the 'Bent wing bastard' as they were some times referred too. The original design of these had a straight wing, when they worked out the final power plant choice they realised that they couldn't fit enought propeller on it for efficient use of the massive power.
    Due to space restrictions taller undercarriage was not feasible, hence the bent wings to allow a higher ground clearance!
    There was another flight characteristic inherent in the Corsair they had to fix, it was too stable in directional control!
    That is why the tail sits forward a bit, made the aircraft turn much faster while maintaining effective control, simply reducing the tail surface would have done it too but at the cost of a degree of rudder authority.
    The bent wings made them unstable, one of the pluses in a fighter so long as you can maintain controll.
    I love Corsairs, and Grumman carrier aircraft of WWII vintage. They are just the ducks guts.
