Ahhhhhhh, but I know for a fact that Gene does enjoy ice cream!

When he was down here in NZ he attended an event at place called Kumeu. I had the honour of feeding him ice cream and yes, somewhere, there is photographic proof!

Gene is one great guy with a wicked twinkle in his eye and a mammoth sense of humour ... keep on smiling Gene :D

I finagled a few minutes of visiting time with Gene when he had his booth at Pleasanton in 1998 by buying my wife a set of earrings from him that are still some of her favorites even though they weren't expensive. One of the nicer folks you would ever want to meet.

Gene ran circles around me for 3 days straight. I'm 28 years old and I had a hard time keeping up. He is amazing!

Same here. Every time we see him,at Pomona,Detroit, when we used to see him at Pate, we would always say, Hey, Mr. Winfield! To which he always replies, "Good to see you boys!" with a big smile!

Met and talked to him a couple of times, and he couldn't have been nicer to a stranger like me. A class act, and I hope to meet him again when he turns 100!

Yep, an example all should follow. He doesn't try to be cool-because he is. Don't forget to get your butt to Mojave, CA Oct 11 for the Gene Winfield & Larry Watson Gathering.

Gene is the best. I read his book when I got it for Christmas this year. I was pretty impressed and when I saw him at the Fresno Autorama I called him Mr Winfield. Same thing, "Call me Gene."

I also saw him tearin' around the Merc Room at Sac this year bright and early before they opened the doors. He certainly is a great resource for all of us.

And the fact that he is willing to share his knowledge by hosting classes says volumes about him as a builder. Some others might feel threatened sharing their knowledge....but he just keeps on truckin.

Also one of our "project cars" in the club is gonna be a nice Winfield semi-clone. A remarkably close build to one of his cars ( He knows which one, one for an old Merced Boy).

    Thanks Gene.

  19. Got the pleasure of meeting him in Detroit. He still says hello and shakes hands with everyone he meets. A true Icon to the Kustom and Hor Rod world.

  20. The first time I met Gene Winfield was at the Leadsled Spectacular in Davenport Iowa in the late 80's. We had just driven 13 hours non stop, pulled in during a sweltering heat wave ,parked our ride and started to wander the grounds. Gene yelled out, come on over here boys and have a Lemonaide with me, its too hot out there! Its a real nice treat to meet someone this nice, I don't care if your famous or not. Thats just downright good people!
Hope to meet up again soon Gene!

I've never EVER heard one bad word about Gene Winfield. You have many fans GENE! Count me as one as well.

You know sometimes you meet someone famous and you're a little letdown if they're gruff or generally uninterested? You don't get that with Gene. He saw me looking at his stuff and came over to talk to me like a long lost friend and even convinced me to buy a bunch of his shit! :D :D I showed him a tiny picture of my '57 Chrysler project and he started asking me all about it. He's the real deal and I was an even bigger fan after meeting him than before. I wanna be just like him, except with coffee, beer, and fried veggies. Thanks again Gene and take care!

met him in a small town outside memphis tn when he came down to paint larry douglas's 50 merc at david o'daniel's shop. heck of a nice guy. and at 79 then still as entergetic as a 20 year old. had pics made with him and got a copy of custom rodder with him in it signed.

  24. Gene came into our pit (The Old Crow belly tanker) while Bobby and Lucky were out on the line. He walked up to me and said that Bobby said it was o.k. for him to borrow a certain tool. I recognized who he was and was speechless. He smiled, shook my hand and said he would return the tool quickly. Hell, as far as I was concerned he could have had the whole tool box. When he did return it I talked with him for a few short minutes. Since then I have seen him at Elmo 3 or 4 more times and he always has time to say hello. Love that guy!!!!! Crow.

Well I'm 71. not as old but also CAN'T eat any melons but mostly cantoloupes. And an interesting thing about cantaloupe is that of all the fruits, its the one that wont make alcohol. Most others will make brandy or some thing. Not cantaloupe. Just an intresting tid bit, I learned from my Father in Law, the moonshiner. Ice man

i had the absolute pleasure of meeting gene at lead east last year. i had always heard he was a great guy, and after i met him, i understood what everyone meant. he was genuinely interested in what i had to say, and took the time to speak to me at length about my project. you could never meet a nicer and more humble, down to earth person. he's a living legend, and i hope he sticks around for another 80 years!

Anyone else get a kick that it says "newbie" above Gene's avatar pic? We know the real score.

He's an inspiration, an individual, and a shining example of what a true American should be. I hope he lives another 82.
