I’m Coolfoot, the original builder of the ’49 Ford Cpe…and The_Monster is one of my sons, The_Dropout is my other son. I'd like to thank all the responses to the "where's my '49"...and I'd like to explain a few things regarding the car.

My dad would not let me have a car until I graduated from HS, so in 1963 I received $50 cash in gifts for graduating from Benson Polytechnic (an all-boy's high school in Portland OR) and immediately bought this '49 Ford Cpe.

I spotted the coupe near the Rexall Drug store where I was a cashier and soda jerk. It had the registration in a holder strapped to the steering column, so I jotted down the address, and wrote the owner. It turns out he had loaned it to a 'friend' who had never returned it, and was happy to take $50 for it!!! Also, it had a '53 Merc V8 and 3 spd OD. I was in heaven!!

It was missing a carb, but I just happened to have a Stromberg 48 from endless Saturdays in local wrecking yards. I bolted it on and added some coat hanger throttle linkage so my dad could drive it home for me while I was at work. Well, the throttle linkage got hung up and he flew through a red light before he could shut it down. My dad was a very careful driver and had some words for me when I got home.

In 1963 I lived a block away from the Rocket Ranch Stinker Service Station. They had a skunk on a rocket as their logo and that is the only place I ever drove the car. The '49 had tube headers and straight pipes all the way back to the rear of the car with no bends and no mufflers...straight under the axle. I can still hear the starter urge that flatty to fire up. I had Willamette Wheel build me those reversed rims, as I remember they were 16" Plymouth centers welded to the back mid section of reversed 15” Buick rims. I ran 7.10x15 front and 8.20x15 rear....blackwalls, couldn't afford whitewalls.

Oscar Bond was a really nice old guy from Oklahoma who opened a welding shop at the end of our street. He never really ever looked clean, wore the same burned coveralls every day, leather apron and black welder's cap. He had really thick gl***es that magnified his eyes and he had to face you directly to see you. I made a deal with him to put away his tools, sweep, move materials, and help him when a job needed an extra set of hands. In return I could work on my car in a corner of his shop and he’d do my welding. So my family pushed the '49 down the street to Oscar's.

Also I should explain that much later I got married, had a baby, and was working part time jobs and going to school full time...I suddenly had no time to finish the '49. Since our ice cream kept melting, I traded the '49 to this guy for a new refrig he bought just before his wife divorced him. At that time the Ford had a Merc 352/Merc-o-matic that was set back in the frame to miss the front cross member.

Even later I chopped a ’51 Ford Cpe and installed a 390/C6 that I drove to work every day and took the boys to Boy Scout camps. I'm currently making a mild custom of my 1964 Mercury Monterey Breeze-Way 2dr, and have a channeled 1957 Studebaker and a '52 Ford waiting to be worked on. Coolfoot

Hey DUDE! Well, thats an interesting find. Looks like an older mag you have there. By the looks of the picture its kinda hard to tell. The ad says its been sectioned 5", however they could of had a typo and ment it was channeled. It does have a rollpan in the front and looks like the hood has been pancaked. The wheels look as if theyre deep, and possibly the original reversed ones. Seems to be shaved all over, but hard to tell if the hood has radiused edges.

Whats interesting to me is the door. Its hard to see if the doors have been bobbed from the photo, however they have NO wing window! Just like my dads doors. Really unusual to see a custom so close with this unique treatment to the wing window.

You say its in Custom Rodder 2006? what issue? or is it issue 6?

    Thanks for the effort DUDE!

WOW! that was a quick response! damn! That is one highly customized ride! And by looking at the back end, it looks nothing like what my dad had started.

I ***umed that where ever it is today, that it would still have the same features and be easy to spot. But alot of the things he did could of been changed or reworked.

But I think youre right, and by looking at the back end, it seems that it has been sectioned. My dads had alot more vertical sheetmetal back there.

(course, his could of been sectioned later... humm..)

    Ill add this...

What I LOVE about this car is that its just plain black. black shows all. and its obvious whoever did the work is a master. I love that there isnt any graphics to take your eye away from the real beautiful work thats been done here. plain paint, plain wheels/tires and basically plain interior allow your eyes to glide from one extreme custom area to the next.
    Very nice!!!

I just saw this post for the first tiem, and also hope your dad finds "his" car! My first though was that it looked like a stock car, as well, with the radiused wheelwells and channel job. I dig the looks a whole bunch! :D

okay, a few years ago i went to the rogue valley street rod show they have feb. every year. (here in Medford) there was a pearl white version of what you are talking about. i remember looking at it several times as we made laps around the expo. i don't think i took pictures though. it had some cheezy stripes down the sides i think (orange and purple) i remember the quality of the paint job was very backyard like, but the guy was tryin'. next time i see one of the guys who registers the cars i'll see if he remembers where it came from. he's got a great memory for random details.

Searched my photos, can't find one. I called an old friend of my dad's, THE louver guy, Ron Lopes. He says a local pinstriper Don Tippit in Grants P*** Oregon, owns that car and has made some good progress, since I've seen it last. I'll try to locate a phone number so he can email me the photos if any and post them here!
