Hey guys I have a 61 Ford Falcon And Im having some issues. For some reason my car sputters and lags when doing left hand turns only. I just replaced the fuel pump, Carb, spark plugs, condenser, rotor and rotor cap. We adjusted the timing and the carb but for some reason it's still having this problem when turning left! Can anyone help me out with an idea whats causing this? Thanks

usually that means the float is too high but could also be a vaccum leak I think

  4. Did you replace your plug wires? I've had this problem before and I opened the hood out of frustration in the dark and it looked like an episode of Star Wars with all the sparks dancing around in there.

Ok im pretty sure theres a vaccum leak and will have it checked tomorrow. How do I know if its the float? any way to check or test it?

Been fulling around with the carb all day and after every adjustment taken it for a ride and the same thing Sputters on left hand turns. What should I adjust on the carb?

Wires seemed to be fine no crystalization sp* and no pulse. Ill check it later tonight to double check.

these are all good answers. This is why the HAMB ROCKS!! i would change the wires first, wires can look good and actually be cracked everywhere.

It's the float level or the float could be gas logged it might need to be replaced

Dont just turn the screws on the carb on the out side, open it up and check inside. IE the floats.

Or just make 3 right turns.

There's a float in the bowl of the carb. You need to find out what carb you have, what the float height should be. Then take the top of the carb off, check the float for defects, then set the height.

I had that problem once and it turned out to be the fuel outlet in the gas take itself! The tank had been built with the outlet too high. If the tank was 1/4 full or lower and I took a left hand turn the gas wasn't high enough in the tank to get pumped out and the motor stalled. I took the lazy man's way out and considered 1/4 full to be empty, kept more gas in it than that and it never stalled again. The car ended up being taken apart so it didn't become someone else's problem later.

What do you have for a gas tank? Factory tank or something else?

Put gas in it! j/k but seriosly i'd start there, go to the gas station and fill it up, if the problem stops then you know its your tank.

Good to hear! :) If theres one thing I've learned, it is never rule out the simple things. So many times there is a problem and we overlook the simple things it could be and end up spending more time or money trying to fix it. We've all done it and if there is anyone out there that says they haven't, then they haven't been working on cars for too long.

Update! Bad News! It still does it. I filled it up and it seemed better but after driving around all day and down to 3/4 tank its still doing it when ever I make left hand turns. Where do I start now?

if it didnt do it when it was totaly full say you have a problem with the pickup in the tank.does it have an electric fuel pump or mechanical?does it do it when you are sitting still{running and turn wheel?}maybe some wireing problem in coloum?

I would have said carb float 10 times out of ten times asked, but you say you replaced the carb. Check the vent on the fuel tank. If you are turning left and it's clogging with fuel somehow, it could be vapor locking. I seriously doubt it though since the symptom briefly went away with a full tank of fuel.

I'm****uming your fuel line comes from the right, or passenger, side. Since you are turning left when the problem exists, make sure your fuel line has not fallen down onto or into a suspension component causing it to be pinched. Check it all the way to tank. Follow it every inch.

You might try checking the coil. I've heard stories of them going bad and not firing when making a turn. It was something about if they're mounted horizontal and the oil in them sloshes around in a turn. This has never happened to me before so I can say for sure, but it might be worth a try.

It's a long shot, but you may have a hole in your pickup tube. It would be like trying to***** soda through a bum straw. I have heard of this happening.

I had this happen in my '85 Elky.
Swapped carbs and motor and the issue ended.
I'm STILL not sure what caused it.
    I suspected an electrical issue.
Try putting an extra ground strap from the block to the chassis.

Too much fuel pressure, try a fuel pressure regulator. It did this on my 54 Chevy after I put in an electric fuel pump.
