I say this to all car owners. If you like what ya have, who give's a **** what others think!!! You are the one driving it and enjoying it, not everyone else. I drive a rusted '53 Plymouth wagon around that looks like ****. I don't care, I just enjoy the fact that it starts up everyday and I can drive it. Them flat 6' are awesome!! KNUX!
I'm putting the finishing touches to the Chop on my '35 5 Window-I did it the Marcel way, and although I think it is harder to do than just slicing straight accross, I think I'd do it the same way again if I had to do it. I took out 2" and filled the Roof-I agree that you have to be careful with the Top to keep the proportions right, and it would be harder to do if I were taking out, say, 4". I used two Roofs for pieces, and I have some extras if someone lives close to me and needs them-I have a complete Cowl and rear Quarter Roof Panel too along with a couple of Doors- I'll Post a couple of pictures in the coming weeks if you are interested-
Study the Pic's on Post #38-you don't cut the Top straight across the back, you follow the beltline more, and it helps to keep the distortion down to a degree-you also make a pie cut at the back of the Cab and fill it with a piece-keeping that shape was the hardest part for me-
OK, never done it that way but open to differant procedures. I see how he does it now I need pic's of what that chop looks like when done? Thanks, Lon
Brigrat If you would like more info on Marcel's way of chopping a 36 3 window, send me a message with your email address and I will send you what I have.
It's interesting that the guy who chopped mine spent alot of time picking a spot to cut straight across the back. He felt it was easier then trying to weld all the corners from the dog leg. I was told that some people cut it by the belt line because it was easier to work the metal there then right in the middle of the roof. Probably the distortion as you had mentioned too. Anyways I am not an authority just repeating what I heard. But as I said before I don't think either way is right or wrong as long as the out come is nice. He added extra metal at the door area instead of at the corner of the roof on my car.
WOW! I appreciate you not ****ting on me for voicing my opinion. I like 5w,unchopped,and 3w chopped. I've seen your Coupe many times, and like the car,but the top just seems flat. Maybe it's just me,LOL!!!! What do I know..... BTW Jesse. I never said you car was ****. I said I didn't like the chop. The black and red one is Rays. Always liked that one, mostly because of the gloss/suede combo.
I 've done a couple the Marcel's way. Here are a few pics, may as well install a 40 dash while you are at it I like to take an extra half inch out of the back of the roof to take that hump out of it. this is the first one i did Also has the extra half inch removed from the back. Also found those Waldon's roof inserts great too.
Has the deck on this car been shortened or is it just the camera angle? Normal '36 rears look a mile long, maybe that happens with a 3/4 rear shot. NEVERMIND, just noticed it's a photoshoped photo.
This car was photoshopped with the body moved back 3" to align the door with the front of the running board and the hood lengthened 3" and the trunk shortened the same. Explained, sort of, above.
Man now I am undecided aboat chopping mine, but what I am shure aboat is I like them as a tail drager and not a hot rod, boy I need to see more pictures, Oh buy the way , the guy that wants to turn his 5 window into a 3 window, the rear roof section from a humpback sedan will give you the pieces to convert yours.
This is what a 36 3 window looks like when you remove all the charm...... I LOVE 36's with a chop, and tail-dragger style....The short roof, and long *** make me weak in the knees......
Best chop ever................................ Best everything ever .............................. A true cl***ic already ........................... JMO
