Getting a vehicle to or buying in Oz?

If I bring a vehicle to Oz, what is the process and what are the taxes like?

If I buy a car there, what is the deal with rego? I have looked at used car ads and all of them mention when the rego runs out. Is it expensive to get a car's registration renewed?

Yea was wonderring same thing.

 

It changes state by state.

But Generally, To get a modified car registered the first time, it needs a full certification by a Government accredited Automotive Engineer....at YOUR cost.

After all that pain, you can just pay for the new rego sticker each year.

Some folks keep a project car rego'd for years while it collects dust in the garage, coz the mods are a bit too extreme to ever be p***ed by an engineer again.

That's why you always see Aussies on here gobsmacked at some of the more rodent like rods that make it out onto American roads.

But like you're doing.....do the research, bring something stockish, load a couple of Mustangs/Camaros to fill your company subsidized 'furniture' container, and you'll have plenty of Aussie Pesos for ANY mods you like!

 

Not difficult at all for most older vehicles, as there are plenty rolling around here.

Original vehicles are easiest.

I have a friends 1960 Chevy in the shop at the moment, which by looking at it didn't need much to p*** licensing here.

Check out www.dpi.wa.gov.au/licensing as it has most of the info about importing there.

$600 for a years worth of rego? What year was that?

I just paid $460 or so for my '75 Kingswood, 6 cylinder.. for ****** 6 months rego. Its gone up like $80 since last year as well.

Actually 'rego' is for V8 in NSW last year was something like $42. The other hundreds are various state taxes. Funny, you pay the same people, but they split the amout up to make you feel better? Something that pisses me off.

But to answer your question, rego is renewed annually and a**** other things includes compulsory 3rd party personal insurance. Some states you can shop for an insurer of choice, some bundle it for you. A $5k second hand car with 10 months rego still on it is good, 2 weeks rego not so good.

 

I just had to pay $567.20 for 12 months reg.

Are Ozzies allowed to have money by the gov't?

Anyone want to lease me their car for a year or so? I may actually look into that. Although I have seen Holden Commodores and Ford Falcons for around $2+k that I could drive around town and just leave it at the airport with the keys in the ignition if I needed to.

Oh yeah, I'm going to Perth for those that didn't know.

 

It balances out. Hospitals and healthcare are free. Unfortunately we expect paved roads, and infrastucture everywhere etc in a country the size of the continental U.S. and only have a population of 22 million to pay for it. The US pop. is at least 10 times bigger so you have the advantage of economies of scale. I reckon we do pretty good.

 

Nothing is free, but that is a debate I won't get into here, thanks.

Once again, my expertise is required in a foreign land and since my company is paying to send the family with me, I'm going. Oz will be my swansong however, unless I decide to stay. Who knows.

 

Find a nice 63-65 Riv. A stocker, or close. Bring it over and register it here. No probs. When it's time to go home leave it at my place. I'll pay you for it.

Visited Austraila when I was in the canoe club, sure would like to see how much it has changed since the early 80's...that aside what does the rego inspection entail, and what does it mean?

There's plenty of US made cars already imported here if you don't like the steering wheel on the other side, which sell for $15000 +.

You can buy some pretty cheap V8 or V6 runners that will last for years, check out http://perth.gumtree.com.au/ and look at the cars under 5k.

Rego ain't that bad, depending on what you buy or own. My wife owns a 2001 Commodore wagon which costs around $500/year for rego, no road worthies here though.

I sold my 65 Stang to a Chap down near Melbourne. It cost him $1500 sail it down. thne another $1000 in fees and inspections. Make sure all the bells and whistles work. It makes the process go so easy.
