We sure have!:D That seems like a 34 month long nightmare  ! (Good thing we both like 34's Doug :p).
I'm very glad that The Broiler is back! Now our kids and their kids will be able experience what a real drive in was/is like.
It's up us now to fill the Car Hop spots and if those are full, eat at the counter ;). We have to show Jim that this is a worth while investment into all of our future.
Guys, the water's ok'd,gas is on lights are right there, still need to ground a circuit and install the disc.
Asphalt goes down tomorrow by a HAMBer!

Cruise nite anyone when it opens? Weds 10/21 will most likely be the day for that.
Car Service from 3-10, 7 days a week after the joint gets its green light.
Glad that Google image is now just a bad memory :D.

Are the lines under the canopy angled or perpendicular to the curb?

My old man say's that on busy nights, there would be a row of cars parked in the middle too. Then there would be two rows to cruise down.

Are the parking spaces going to be w-i-d-e-r than today's typical parking lot?

Big ol cars inbetween tight white lines are tough.

  13. My question is who will be the first bigname movie guy to film a hot rod movie here????

Greta job on the lot 55 oldsrocket! I was there when the lines were being laid, Very impressed:D

No burnouts for a while guys, Want to try and keep it new 4 a bit.
We had a meeting today and already perhaps 2 staff members got pen marks on the the "Killer Pearl White Booths" in the "Starlight Polar Lounge"
    Go figure?

The parking is what it is, City has control over the spaces, angle and width, the ADA stipulates what goes down with the Handicap parking.
If there warants a need for middle row parking, we may see what can happen there:confused:.
When it's all ready for cruising I'll let ya know ta c'mon down;),

It looks like it's about time to pull in for some car service, I'll have a Big Boy with onions, an order of fries, and a chocolate shake.

Something else that has come back from about 40 years ago is Cruising Van Nuys Boulevard. It's not 3 night a week like it used to be, but, the second Wednesday of each month. This next Wednesday will be the 4th or 5th cruise.

I was surprised to see how many people remember, and showed up once again to cruise what once was the world's most famous cruising strip. All the famous boulevard icons like the Van Nuys Bob's Big Boy Drive-in are gone, but, still at times I was overwhelmed with the feeling of yesterday coming back.

The hope is that it will survive and we will continue to cruz.

We should be open by the 21st if we pass Fire. Training is begining soon and we still have to get the disc up. What do you guys say about a "Still before it opens cruise under the canopy" maybe next week on Tues or Thurs? I have to see if the driveway will be totally completed by then? They were still working on the approach on Tuesday.

    Kent,
I love that fact that Van Nuys Cruisin Assn put that together, I haven't missed one yet! I love cars, but I love burger joints just the same. Was upset when Miller Acura took the Bob's Van Nuys Drive In, was even at the last cruise there as well as Canoga Parks a year later, both of these places were intact at the time of their closure. We'll see if we can talk Jim into duping that one as well :).

BTW, Congrats to us all, we carcked 100k in views!

Hi Kevin, if you've been all these places we should know each other.
Needless-to-say the city of Sherman Oaks should be ashamed of themselves for tearing down the world's most famous Bob's Drive-in. I was also there at the last days of the Van Nuys Bob's.

This is why I took a particular interest in writing a story about both Bob's, and Harvey's for Rod & Kulture and putting it into some kind of historical
perspective. I also plan a follow up feature covering the comeback opening.

I took some shots of the Canoga before they tore in down. There are so many of these places lost to history through short sighted greedy bean counters trying to figure how to cram more people into the same amount of space for more money while also making the city an ugly eyesore.

We seem to have no since of history here, we tare shit down before we
    even think about it.

Whoa! I guess it's time to break out the rod.......

The neon Bob's disk is just about finished! I drove over to Jim Simington's/EcoSign tonite to check it out. Just e-mailed a photo over to Mazooma...on the ground the sign looks bigger than the Moon! To be installed at 5AM this morning in case anybody's up for an early morning drive ;)

We made it! Opening date's official! A note of thanks to the Mayor would sure go a long way:

"Bob’s Big Boy ( formerly Johnies ) will be opening on Monday October 19th at 10:00 AM….wait until you see what a great job they have done restoring historical elements of the design…"

A great American Landmark. You "feel" so good at the end of this thread.

Please post a copy of the U.S. constitution in the new building.

    Individual

    P.S. Isn't California's government broke?
