Our kids will never know the joys of junkyards.

  2. Hell Nads, looking at some of the recent posts on the HAMB, 3/4 of the newbies don't even know what a swap meet or a junkyard is.

Nads & VooDoo: Jeez, guys. I HONESTLY WISH that I could bring back the REAL junkyards, so the younger gen could just EXPERIENCE the "coolness" of threading yer way through the briars and yellow jackets and REALLY seeing '20s to '50s cars in Mother Nature's arms!

Obviously, Nads is somewhere around my gen, AND I can sense that VooDoo LOOKED HARD when there was still a little left.

I am just glad as HELL that TWO guys have BEEN there and remember!

  4. It can be done if you are serious enough. I ended up starting my own 'junkyard' on 5 acres in 1995. Got zoning, then permits, then fenced it and started buying stuff. I'm a Pontiac guy so I almost exclusively buy Pontiacs but, you can buy whatever you wish. So far, i have had about 700 of them and saved more than half from the crusher. I currently have 450 or so and am moving them all to a new, larger, property I bought that has much less taxes.
I am not even a business. I did this with money from my regular job and bought cars with my extra money. I am just a private collector and now living beyond my dreams. Meaning, as much as I loved going through junkyards as a young man, I never dreamed I could have MY OWN. It is really cool to have so much stuff. If I need most anything, it is right here. You could do it too, I did.
It just takes incentive and will. My stuff is 1955-1981. may not seem so old now, but wait, 20, 30 years.

Steve, MAN! I am super glad for you to be able to achieve your dream, buddy! Few of us can. And I am envious that you are in an arid climate where your babies can rust VERY slowly (as opposed to Ohio whree rain and snow seem to fall way too frequently!).

Back when I was in college, I actually (wild-ass dream) proposed that the staes and/or feds PRESERVE old classic cars as a sort of national treasure, preferably OUT WHERE YOU ARE! Of course, that wnet nowhere, with obvious results. Out east of the Mississippi, your only chance of finding really old iron is if osmeone has put in a barn or shed -- DECADES ago.

But, I have surely enjoyed reading your post, buddy!

I found a 29 ford coupe in a field that has been sitting there for many of years. Not bad shape. The owner of the land near it said it was on public land

Hamber WickedGoodRacer posted these artful shot
from a very old yard, Bishop's, under assault north
of Bangor, Maine. If you wanna check out MORE of
his pix, the thread is entitled "Crushing News" and
    started 10/9/09.

Haunting scene shot by HotRod1932 in Oregon, posted 10/9, speaks like
an elegy of this car's once-proud past. Talk about a lonely scene. GOOD
shootin' HotRod! Seems the time will come when PHOTOS will be all we
    have left of these.

HotRod1932 got these shots in Harney County, OR. Some of you guys &
gals will remember the somewhat famous historical photo of Earl Brown-
ing's junkyard in that county from around 1930. That pic appears earlier
in this thread and is in the Oregon archives. It can be ordered for a
reasonable cost, suitable for framing. They will print from the original
    negative.
