Here's some pics of my newest project.

Check out the tree growing out of the engine compartment! It came out with the car, I'm thinking about trying to get it out of the car and planting it in my yard. Seems a shame to waste it.

I'm actually going to combine this car with my '55 sedan which runs and drives and has good solid floors and chrome. I've done it before with an O/T musclecar. I've got a couple other projects to finish before I can start on it but I had to get it home because it was in a junkyard and I didn't want any good parts to walk away (I took the trim off before I left the yard so it didn't fall off).

Just thought I'd share some pics of the rusty stuff that still gets fixed here in the rust belt. Southern guys, count your blessings. Anyone got a nice pair of 2dht doors?

Hey fellow Rustbelter, I know what you mean. I dragged this one home from Peoria a few weeks back. I do feel a little cheated because I didn't get any flora with mine.

    Bless your heart Squablow.
I know it can be done.
Down here we've aways crushed stuff that you northern guys would be happy to build. I even know a couple of guys who drive down here and buy rust free stuff to take back up north and resell. They do it on a continual basis. It made me wake up and lose the at***ude and shake off the lazies and put more stuff on the road so it'll be around for others later.Way to go on your find. Now all we need is an old time revival to get the ratrod guys to accept primer and paint!! LOL!!

Is that a '38 Buick? There's a guy in Oshkosh that has an all black '38 Buick 4 door with side mounts on it, all stock, a damn cool looking thing. That one you got doesn't look bad at all to me. Cars like that are the "clean" ones we have to travel out of state to pick up.

It's pretty much all there. The engine and ****** were junk but I was able to find a replacement from a fellow HAMBer in Detroit. The floor boards in front of the front seat and the trunk are rusted out. The car cost me $550 plus gas and the replacement engine/****** was $400, plus gas. I'll be building all my own sheet metal parts. I've done a lot of sheet metal work before but have found a lot of information in posts on the HAMB that I'm going to put to use in this build.

Added: It's a '37. If you happen to know any one with '37-38 parts I'm looking for headlights and side mounted spare tire covers.

  12. I have the center divider out of a 37 Buick limo if you feel the need to drive way up here and get it!

    Hey Squawblow,

From the one picture, it looks like a "super-rare" Dodge Skyliner for '55!

Exner et. al. only built one, and you found it!

Shouldn't be a biggie for a guy of your skill to slide a good floor pan, and any necessary black metal under that one to return it to the road.

This is the car that is going to receive the parts from the convertible. It's more of a convertible conversion onto the green car, than it is a restoration of the blue car. But one way or another, I'm going to have a convertible, damn it.

Here is the jailbar I saved from the crusher (well I suppose not literally--the guy I bought it from crushes for a living. He restores cars himself and does awesome work) , still just starting with it. Pulled it all apart and have been trying to clean up the frame. I was surprised at how solid it really was when I got it. I don't have any picts of the Falcon before I started, but lets just say I got it from a guy that parted it out for the one he was building. It was complete, but.....

Thats why there are more fast cars in the rustbelt than Kustoms. If you build them fast you can skimp on the body work becasue people will only get a glimpse of it when your going down the highway. Thats my story anyway and Im stickin to it:D

Plus there's tons of good engines around because the bodies rot away before the motors blow up.

Welcome to Wisconsin, where Chevy 350's are $100 and 400 hours is a reasonable estimate for bodywork.

Just curious - how would that Buick look as a fenderless rod? Maybe just a mild chop and with just the top of the hood. Photochop anyone?

I've thought and thought about pulling this out, just cant seem to get er done....

  25. I've sold convertibles in similar shape guys used as donors. I missed out on a '55 Plymouth a couple years ago, but I know where another one might still be.

That actually doesn't look too terrible considering. For some reason the Mopars only rot bad in the rear 1/3 of the frame, but they rot bad and want to break in half at the door openings. Even a fairly decent '57 DeSoto hardtop I cut some pieces off from before it got crushed it wasn't hard to pull the rear bumper so long as I took about 10" of the frame with me. And we have a '54 Plymouth ragtop donor that has no frame rails at all between the rear spring perches. The perches are there, the rear 10" of frame and bumper are there, but the rest is gone.

Funny you mention that, the same yard I got this car at has another '55 4 door sedan, the back bumper is laying behind it, still attached to about a foot and a half of frame. I'm surprised that this convert held together when they picked it up with the forklift. Getting it off the trailer without damaging the important parts will be a challenge, but I'm sure I can do it.

I think this car will be the perfect donor, since all the convertible specific stuff is there and usable. I'll have to find some better doors and a better front seat, but those pieces can come from a regular 2 door hardtop.

  27. The '59 Plymouth ragtop I sold about 5 years ago, you couldn't open the doors.. the latches were about all that was holding the quarters in place after we dragged it out of the woods. Unloading it off the rollback it was flopping like it was a dead fish.
