Just thought I'd share the outcome of my el'cheapo paint job on my "NON-HAMB COMPLIANT" hotrod with Rustoleum. Few weeks back had a few questions and posted some pics here as well: http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=400624 Maybe someone is looking for a economical paint job to throw on a everyday parts getter, work truck...what have you...Maybe you may consider going this route. I fully understand that the car would need to be stripped down for a proper automotive finish...but since I have no plans of doing a finish like that, this was sufficient for my taste. The attached photos you see is my $30.00 paint job ( 2 quarts of Rustoleum, 1 Quart of Acetone and a small bottle of Valspar enamal hardener) and was only shooting some color to be a little different than the ol' flat black we see so much of. The finish is a semi gloss finish (I mixed GLOSS RED and FLAT BLACK to get this color and luster). I was after a "dull" but not flat or satin type finish and achived it by mixing the gloss and flat. The finish gave me a nice old fadded paint job that reminds me of a vehicle that was painted in the 60's and was just taken out of storage...just the look I was after! The paint is hard as a rock and proved that today when the wrench in my pocket fell out onto the cowl tank...not even a mark! My car is still in the process of being ***embled, so don't start judging it to much yet So, take it for what it is worth, no need to lecture about how you have to strip it all off for a "GOOD" paint job, No need to hear that my car is a rat rod and not traditional....I know all that but as stated above, just wanted to share a way to get a quick, no frills, driveway paint job for $30 bucks!
This has the makin's of a "git rich kwik" scheme".LOL. Dam that REALLY looks good,,plus the metal is protected too. Who wants to pay the outrageous sum of $300.oo for a paint job when you can do this. Again way to go.
Nice! I like it. I painted the front clip of my 62 Bel Air with rustoleum satin white spray bombs. I'm thinkin of doin the rest of it some weekend in the near future.
A buddy in my car club just sold his 35 Ford he painted with R/O and a brush...looked good enough to get 20K for it.

HMMM. Very nice and for $30.00 and a little labor, WOW. Maybe a $300.00 paint job is not so out of line for the rest of us do it your self builders. ..John
Looks good to me, but it's hard to tell from those pictures. Couldn't you use another brand of enamel paint and avoid the future repaint problems that comes from the fish oil (I believe that's what's in it) that is in the rustoleum?
Very cool. I like the color. With paint getting higher and higher I can see alotta poeple turning in this direction.
Never really checked into it to be honest....I sprayed a steel shed the same way (less hardener) in the 1980's.....other than having some paint fade to it...it looks as good as the day I painted it!! That is what sold me on doing it this way. Pretty much any hardware/home improvement store stocks a mul***ude of Rustoleum color choices...if I get tired of the color ...$30.00 later I got a new one on the car! No need for a top notch paint job on this car...it's a driver and don't want the "WORRY" of a $1000+ paint job getting scratched.
As a primered hardhead (been that way for over 15 yrs) I'm really impressed with the results, Damn, now you got me thinking about spending beaucoup $$ for my future paint job...Did you say $30??? sounds right to me..
Hey, It ain't only the "fish oil" that will bite ya in the ***! Good ol' alkyd enamel can't be shot over without problems, as well! Given what automobile paint products cost today, I can't get why anyone would attempt to spray over anything but sound, compatable substrate i.e. fresh primer/sealer over metal? S****y Devils C.C. There isnt any fish oil in rustoleum EXCEPT for the rusty metal primer, hasnt been for a long time. so no fish oil worries. its just enamel of some sort. I sprayed a car with it once and it turned out pretty good, I used naptha for reducer to make it dry quicker and it worked well. Doug
Really nice, especially like the color. Just one question : how do you sit in that thing? Doesn't seem like a lot of head room lol.
If you're gonna leave all the dents in the body that paintjob is the logical choice. I dont see anything wrong with it. My '55 3100 is getting the same method.
nice color, i had a 68 camaro painted with marine enamel, most likely the same as rustolem, it was a high gloss and lasted for years, when it did start to fade guys would ask if it was the orignal paint..lol, i think it was two parts royal blue and one part black.
I'm 6' tall and 250lbs round....I sit on a real nice low back bucket seat out of a skidsteer and the top of my balding head is still 2-3" below the roof line. The seatback is about halfway back into rear side door window and gives me PLENTY of leg room as well. I've driven formula style racecars in the past and my set-up in this Fordor has that "****pit" feel that "I" like.
