I'm new to the HAMB, as well to the idea of "traditional hot rods".... This notion that HCP is letting in too much junk... What a bunch of high-minded hooey haaw. I suspect that some of those moaning are doing so because they think their shit don't stink. Some are cryin because all there blood sweat and tears, not to mention money they put into there rides, doesn't seem to turn heads, like the young punk ass who just drove into the show with a rat rod, that’s so out of whack everyone does a double take and smiles. The reason I enjoy the Pileup is because more than half the cars are built low budget, and by amateurs. I can appreciate the well craft rods, as well as those not so well made.... and all others that fall in between and HCP has a nice mix of everything in between. Did I see some rides that I thought were gawd awful? You bet I did, but that’s called “my opinion”, and your welcome to yours as well. However, once you start knockin HCP and the show in general, and to get on the HAMB and pontificate about it… just because they didn’t pick em like you wanted…. Now you’re acting like a bunch of snot nosed zealots. As far as I'm concerned, all you blow hards, bitchin about seein to much crap... keep your hot shit parked in the garage next time, and stay home.

I don't think anyone would knock your wagon... hell I would love to have one.... When I go to an event I look at what I like and ignore the rest. Unless someone wants to start their own show I feel they shouldn't complain about someone else's. I don't go to the pileup for many reasons stated in this thread... If you all want to have a good time go to the RUST REVIVAL in may up in WAYLAND Mo. pm breeder for info.....

  3. Another great pileup! Kudo's to the Czars, Cathrine and the Red Shirt Army. We all had a great time, saw lot's of great cars, ate some great food, saw some great bands and had entirely too much fun. :) See ya in 2010!

A simple rule change that could eliminate a lot of the idiots is:
The car must be safe to drive IN THE EYES OF THE PROMOTERS.
Then you can blame the insurance company for the restrictions to give the guys pitching a beef somethign to chew on..

I think that is a good idea, but then you would get into a 15 minute debate telling these fools why their car cant get in this year when it had the last 2. They'll hang around for hours waiting for shift change to try and do it all again with a different inspector. Think it won't happen? I happens every year.

All its going to do is cause more congestion at the gate

THATS nice of ya to say bud, but lets not compare our show to the PU!!!!:eek:if a 1000 cars would show up in wayland, id prolly call the cops myself and tell them to shut it off! myself, or anyone else who puts onna show, cannot control traffic, bitchy people, and mistakes! it really does take an army and alot of shit happens! when you start lettin cars in, and then you look up and notice they are pouring in, well, some shit get turned the wrong way! bound to happen, i could give a shit less!

people that bitch at the rust revival, should really not come! its laid waaayyy back, and will hopefully always be! we only have enough room for cars, and we will never move the show! being a show promoter [wow that sounds funny coming from me:rolleyes:] i was almost teary eyed when we parked and got out! the red army was workin there ass off, and i was overwhelmed just watching them!

to even begin to think about doin a show of the magnitude is beyond my skills and wants! ive said it a million times and ill day it again! we based our entire show off of the pileup with the help of the czars! nicest guys on earth! gettin show promoters to share info is hard sometimes, and these guys pm'd me askin me if i needed any help with startin our show!!! THATS CLASS TO THE 10TH POWER!
LOVE TO YOU GUYS AND MY GIRLY DW, AND THE RED ARMY! im proud to be a sponsor of the show, and red shirt army person! im always the beer guy,, which i think is good, not sure how long i would last as a parker, before someone would be in the ER gettin a large red flag removed from there ass!!!
best show in the midwest EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I got off work at 1 on friday, ran around gettin wifes car serviced, tire fixed, kids cloths packed, and got to school 10 mins for they got out! took our f*%king house dog [btw, dont piss off your wife and then leave for the hamb drags, you come home to a house dog} , and we were gone! got to morris at 830, went downtown to meet up with jeffro norwell to say hello, talked to some buds for a min, kids were froze and hungry, ate, went to hotel room....hungout with the ajjoining room of vagabonds till 230! got to the show at 11 on sat, ran around like mad to get stuff done, left at 3, got home at 8pm! other then a few beers with my vbond brothers in the hotel, i was sober ! anyone who knows me now knows what this show means! not drink, take kids who would have rather stayed home outta the cold, and leave early???? yeah, its just that damn good offa show!

novel, by todd [breeder] reed :rolleyes:

First pile up this year and definately going back this year. We ran a 50 pontiac straight 8 down from Ancaster, Ontario Canada area this year and had a blast. We met great, helpful, people that seemed from my perspective all like minded. Personally I think this was one of the best 1 day shows that I have ever been to and can't wait to go back next year.

Now with all that said I personally would like someone to define what "traditional hot rod" types of cars look like. Not to throw fuel on the fire but I would like to know if anyone is up for that challenge?

I can tell you what its not, tractor grilles, tractor diesel engines, jacked up 66 mercs, fat fender fords with dodge dakota grille shells.

  12. I love this show! I disregard what the OP criticized on some of the particulars (i.e. junk).
All and all, this was a funtime and shouldn't be scrutinized because it wasn't someone's perfect rendition of "Traditional Rod and Custom" show.
I like this show for its creativeness and in every car, there is. Also, in my eyes, is a celebration to the average Joe Gearhead not emptying his pockets to have his car professionally built...something I heard through the grapevine of high rollers getting their cars in and can't even tell you what kind of motor their car has in it...that should be frowned upon.
I also want to tell everyone, how the show has inspired friends to build their own cars just for this show. They build these cars with pride and for regards to traditional hotrod building ways on chopping, channeling and sectioning. Also they modify the original suspensions and use the original flatheads with maybe a tri-carb set up.
The thing is, that a lot of friends are being made by helping build the car and more to be made attending the show. So its kind of a community thing amongst gearheads.

I'm a car guy. I love them, they consume more of my thoughts than sex.
my Uncle and I ( We havent been to a carshow together since 1989) had a great time walking through the show truely appriciating the nice cars, and pointing and laughing at the fubar cars, ya that lincoln was beyond words but it made my uncle and I laugh, what about the outhouse trailer, I lived in the deep south, I know what a traditional out house looks like and I can't believe they let that in!!!!
When did everyone loose there sense of humor, some of you guys are such tight asses about cars I don't see how the hell you enjoy the hobby.
Ya jager bottles aint traditional air cleaners but that car made me smile and gave me and my uncle somthing to talk and laugh about.
get the fuckin sticks outta your asses and enjoy a car show for a change!

Czars..Thank you for a great day!

  18. And to think people keep asking me why i don't go to shows anymore. Like you people have been saying, if you don't like it don't go, well i don't and i won't. There's a big difference between ragging on someone and trying to give a little constructive criticism. Knowing Curt as i do and seeing he's done more in Wisconsin for the hobby than most anyone, i can say he knows what he's talking about. You all read about traditional rods in books and copy them, he was back there then doing it the first time around in the fifties. Maybe respect somebodys opinion thats been around the block a couple more laps than yourself. But than if you think traditional is boogered up welds and who has the most tattoo's i'm just wasting my breath and your time.

I agree with the lead-in comments on this thread.

But there is one fact of car shows I have come to understand: all the plans and rules and requirements don;t mean much in the end -- it is all driven by who shows up with what.

If mostly rat rodders are mobile for a given show, then guess what, it's a rat show.

Tell you what happened to me once. There was a local all-British car show. I drove by with my Tub to see the show. As I pull up, the event organizer waves me in - he wants me to show my car. LOL. So there I am with my rod, wheel to wheel with Bentleys and Jaguars and the like.

All I did was show up, and not even meaning to be a part of it, I was in.

A lot of life is just showing up. If we got more of our traditional cars out into the shows, situations like this might be less of an issue.

Blah, blah, Blah...this is why I stopped hanging out with the high dollar mopar crowd...cause if it isn't exactly "tradititonal" (or with the mopar snobs, "correct factory" options)...guys bitch. I like "traditional", "street" and "rat" rods. Some of the rat guys take "function" in a whole new direction, I applaude them. Traditional guys and Street rod guys have tons of money in theirs, and I applaude them as well. Alot of guys here need to drop the (fake) tough guy image and enjoy the event for what is...guys and gals who like cars, and support charitable causes.

(2nd year in row, drove 6 hours, spent the whole weekend, had a great time...)

25 years ago a well built High Boy (without fenders) in Wisconsin, would almost get you thrown in jail, if you crossed paths with the wrong cop. CURT R and a bunch of his friends went up to the state capitol and had the vehicle codes changed (lots of hard work). Wisconsin now has some real sensible laws, that are HOT ROD friendly. Thanks to CURT R we can drive our HOT RODS in Wisconsin.

All the clown cars........rat rods, and whatever you want to call them, make guys like us who went through those times NERVOUS. It wouldn't take too much, the way the "Government" is, to revert back to the way things were then, or WORSE.

Young kids see shit rods at a show.........go home wanting to build a shit rod........it feeds on itself.

It would be helpful if the criteria could be changed to "discourage" those troublesome pieces. You don't have to eliminate them, just lower there numbers slowly over time.

The HUNNERT CAR PILEUP is a traditional car show......can't wait 'till next year.

I guess since I lost my job and couldn't afford to fix the rust on my '57 Ford like I planned I should just park, I didn't know me driving my rusty, yet safe to drive, car offends the almighty purists. I'll just go park it in a field somewhere so I don't hurt your eyes driving and enjoying my car. I hope you can accept my sincere apology and when I do get a chance to make it to the Pileup, while I don't think my car is anything spectacular to show, from what I understand they donate proceeds to charity, so I was thinking about paying for it to go into the show, but I won't subject you guys to this:

But in all seriousness, I've never been to this show, I know people who've gone just about every year, and went to this years one. It's a show I've always wanted to go to. There's gonna be crap at every show, and people I know who've went there have talked about some of the bad cars that they see there. I see enough decent cars in pictures from the show that I would like to go see them in person. I think I can ignore the crap.

Curt R, I hope you don't go to BTTF's, I've only been there once, and its size is overwhelming, a lot of stuff I didn't care to see, but I don't dwell on those cars, I move past them to the stuff I want to see. I have a feeling you would go postal there if the HCPU got you this upset.

Oh and this "bad welds aren't traditional" crap, these people are called hacks, and I know the "I was there" person you are, don't want to admit it, but yes there were hacks back then as well. I've met some. I was driving my car back from cruise night the last time I ran into one, and stopped to get something to eat. This guy saw my car and started talking to me. I generally like talking with the guys who've been there, but I soon came to the realization that this guy was a genuine traditional hot rod hack.

I told him I want fix the body up but lost my job, so I was just driving it and enjoying it. He proceeded to tell me I shouldn't fix the body, leave it original cause that's the style now. Then he told me that if I'm dead set on fixing it I should just hammer some sheet metal to fit the contours and tack it on behind the rust and fill it with bondo. Even after I had informed him I'm a welder and would rather weld in replacement metal. Then he tried telling me that the 80s ford rangers were the best chassis get a front suspension from for swapping in classic cars.

So tell me, how are hacks not traditional? Most of the "rat rodders" I know, the guys who live for building a old piece of crap car, love it when guys like you get really upset about their cars. So it's guys like you that give them the attention, give them a reaction to their car, you're fueling their fire. Ignore them and they'll go away.

Well if your building a car to be a piece of crap on purpose to get a reaction, i'm not sure they will ever really " GET IT ". Build it any way you want , just make it safe so you don't kill yourself or more importantly someone else.

    HunnertCPup,,
doesn't want "Traditional HotRods" and they don't want Gripey Old Men or PAINT either. Read their website criteria,,exact opposite of the Hambs. The Hamb will be around forever though.

I mistakenly joined the website and then left because of the Circus atmosphere.RatRods are a fad like bellbottoms just give it time to fade. In 10 years everyone will giggle at the pictures of "the weird cars some were building". Think of all the cheap "parts cars" that'll be available when that day comes.

I never said I was building my car to be a piece of crap on purpose, I was talking about people I know that do. I took an original car that was running decent, and while my cash flow to fix it up so it isn't an eye sore to people like Curt R, ended, I had 2 choices, spend what little money I had left on fixing up the body and not have a car I could drive, or spend some money on the driveability issues and have an old car to tool around in safely. I'll be damned if I ever regret that decision, I have a blast driving it and I don't care who likes it. I wish the body was all fixed up too, but it doesn't stop me from enjoying driving it.

I've been on the HAMB for awhile and this place used to be full of rusty & patina hot rods and customs and 4 door cars. And what happened over the years is the more time and money that accumulates over time you put it into your car or cars and you get a nice traditional hot rod. So I've noticed more lately that there are a lot of purists running their mouths off and doing things like running down car shows, running down peoples cars, etc.

Me, and I know there are a lot of others like me on the HAMB, we've learned and understand they way things were done back in the day, and also understand that to a majority of this site it's about cars and having a good time with fellow enthusiasts. Thankfully when I've been to a HAMB meet, the people ranting and raving on here don't seem to make an appearance, or if they do, they are the people in the HAMB shirts that walk by but don't ever stop.

And thankfully, some of the nicest period correct hot rods I've seen built by people on the HAMB, well those guys are out there doing their own thing, building the cars they love, instead of on the internet ranting about car shows or running down other peoples cars. They're off building traditional hot rods and customs so guys like me can see them and constantly be reminded what level of car I want to have some day.

I don't visit the HAMB as much as I'd like to, I came on wanting to find some HCPU photo threads but found this instead. I just can't lurk around when I see people running down a car show that last year raised $25,000 for charity. Curt R, it sounds like you've done a lot for the hot rodders in Wisconsin, but what have you done lately that doesn't serve to benefit you in some way?

To the Chrome Czars, keep putting on this show and I promise I'll make it one of these years.
