Back in the 70´s a friend of mine claimed that Cadillac once had a standard V8 engine with 3 quad carburators. I never really believed him. Should I?

Not from the factory. I'v personally seen a triple quad intake for a pontiac, aftermarket of course, so there's a chance one might have been made for the caddy at some point.

4. As per above.......Triple 2's? Yes. Triples quad? No.

He may have changed his mind since the 70s though......

5. Way back when I knew a guy who built a cross ram manifold for a Y-block Ford that had four quads. Damn it looked good and awsome. The carbs were way out over that valve covers kind of like the early Chrysler cross rams, but it never worked worth a crap. Way too much carb for a 292 and besides they were those old ugly early Ford quads. Leaked like hell, would not idle, had really bad bogg. But other than that, it worked...)

I hope you guys don´t think I´m crazy but I remember seeing 10 deuces one night. I think it was an Offenhauser manifold with strombergs on a 1950-something Hemi Chrysler/De Soto or maybe it was a 1952/53 flathead Ford.

Anyway I´ve never seen a triple quad manifold, factory or add-on and I´d like to see a photo of it, Pir8Darryl, so if you remember who manufactered that one for the Pontiac I might be able to find a pic of it on the Internet.

I have seen 8 Strombergs on a Chrysler. Not ten. Had you been drinking at all that night? On a flathead is just a joke. Was it some kind of show car?

Friend of mine had a later Cad engine with a 4bbl in the center and a 2bbl on each end. Home made, but it worked!

Ha-ha! No, it was approx. 1964 and I wasn´t even drinking age yet! The car was in the parking lot of the Bowling Alley. It was "topless" because there was no room for a hood - and there they were ...... 5 deuces in double-file and each of them had one of those chrome, curved, short-tube stacks turned towards the front! It was an instant orgasam.

Still don´t believe me?

Cadillac offered an option with 3 two-barrel carbs in the years 1958, 1959, and 1960.

I am unaware of any factory US produced 3 quad units.

I am also unaware of any commercial aftermarket 3 quad units.

Would like evidence (catalog reference) if any do exist.

I have a buddy who swears he passed up a 3X4 setup (aftermarket) at the Wichita swap meet several years ago, carbs, linkage and all. It was for a BBC.

I know a guy who is going to put two 6-71 blowers on a 392. he could put 4 quads and have you all beat.... maybe another in the middle for balance.

1st off I can't believe we're even contemplating the possibility of 3 quads. Anyone who has a grain of mechanical sense, just enough to be dangerous, must be able to visualize that 12 bores will not fit in a row let alone with any size float bowl. Making a series of random jokes about it is certainly appropriate on this post, but many of us have heard all kinds of ironious and frankly bullshit facts about cars from some who'd even fight over it. Had a bet with a guy for $10 that Ford never produced a retractable T-bird. He bought a $30 book in hopes of proving me wrong.

No such thing, never was, never will be. I'm also sceptical about the Pontiac manifold story for the same reason of available space.

I'm not sure that I'm reading this correctly, but this seems to be an intake for 3 four barrel carbs. It reads to me like it is really talking about 2V carbs, but it says "triple quad".

EXETER AUTO SUPPLY

Part number 3615 - INTAKE MANIFOLD - CHRYSLER
1955-1957 Manifold
Manifold only. Wt 16-1/2 lbs. 315 cubic inches & 500 engine triple quad. This unit may be ordered for either stock 4-bolt carburetors or Stromberg and Holley 3-bolt type. Be sure to specify. Linkage no longer available.

Also, Jim O'Clair mentioned AFB triple quads in an article in "Hemmings Muscle Machines", July 2007. The article was "Carter Four-Barrel Carbs".

Not exactly what we're talking about, but here's a photo of the Moonkist T's triple quad. It at least proves that it can and has been done.

As far as Cadillacs go... There's a street racing living legend from 'round these parts named Simon... This fellow who is now somewhat elderly, has a blue late 70's Caddy that maintains a "believable" exterior street appearance at a glance... Although under the hood is some sort of monster powerplant, and there's a rollbar, racing seats, etc inside... Simon comes from the "Brooklyn Heavy" school of street racing, but he hails from Newark, New Jersey (the street racin' capital of NJ)... Possibly some folks reading this might know who Simon is-- Like I said, he's kind of a living legend among locals who are in the know 'bout this sort of thing... Every now and then he shows up at E'Town with the "No Time" racers... Never saw another Caddy quite like Simon's.... "The Doc" (Celebrity Drag Racing Authority & Visionary)...

The Pontiac with 3 quads was a feature car in a major Pontiac publication, it was a '66 GTO. Pretty sure the owner was able to cast up an add-on (it was not a bolt-on) to the stock Tri-Power intake to mount 3 Carter AFBs. They're pretty short in length, but the manifold was a bit tall and 'long' on top to accomodate all 3 of them. They actually fit pretty well.

It's real and it ran, the guy drove it a lot.

------------------------------------------

Now, ready for another 'strange but true' carburetion arrangement?

Pontiac again, this time factory issue.

Here's repro of the '63 421 SD 'bathtub' tunnel ram. Notice that there is an unmachined raised pad that would accomodate a 3-bolt 2-barrel idling carb in between the two 4-barrel mounting pads.

Shot of a real factory bathtub complete with correct 750 NASCAR AFBs, you can see the 2-barrel carb mounting pad here as well.

Shot of yet another repro intake (the carb pad has almost been machined away on this one), is there really enough room?

Yep there's room, linkage would be tight. The carb shown here for comparison is just an old Holley 94 and not an actual carb that was used on one of these. The earliest factory 'bathtub' intakes used a 3-bolt blockoff plate here, the 2-barrel idling carb was found to be unnecessary.

Later versions were not fully machined for the 2-barrel, I have only seen one picture with the 2-barrel carb mounted on one of these, I can't remember where I saw it though.

Aw yeah, you´re right. I made a typographical error.:)
True, but there was whole lot of wild stuff made for the flathead back then. Multiple carbs, superchargers, etc. So don´t be surprised if I find a photo of a 6, 8, or even 10 carb flathead.
Who could resist!?
I´m pretty sceptical myself of a „factory optional“ 3-Quad but Pir8Darryl
says he´s seen a Pontiac with an after market on it so maybe
Me too - still looking
I don´t agree.
Indeed it does.
Alhough this is a „chamber“ manifold it does prove (once again) that it can be done.
Oh God! These photos are too good to be true! These are getting copied and saved!
Wow! A cross ram! Again ….. proof that it was done!ffice:eek:ffice" />
