Glad I got at least one ride in the Steady Breaker. Sorry for the loss, but I'm glad you're OK. Good brakes = good idea!

Yeah, I am NOT against modern attemps to make cars safer at all. But I hate it when ALS "takes over" for you when what you REALYY NEED osmetimes is CONTROL of your own brakes! Those milli-seconds could have made a whole bunch of diff. in Pop's IMPACT!

You're right, those miliseconds may have made a huge difference in this unfortunate accident. Modern brakes and ABS may have prevented the accident completely. Locked brakes take longer to stop than non-locked. Sliding friction (grip) is less than rolling friction, best friction is 15% slip which is something a human can not maintain. You also can not pump and re-apply as fast. ABS also allows you to steer, so he may have been able to steer around the idiot in the 4x4.
Regardless, new or old make sure you have good brakes for those oh-**** moments.

Good part is, Vehicle insurance is exactly that....vehicle insurance....It "shouldnt" matter who is driving, I used to deal with this kind of stuff all the time where pookie bear was "holding" baby momma's car and crashed out...insurance will cover it, then they drop the policy...

Check with your at fault providers insurance though as insurance co's want to pay the least amount of money they can....and NEVER, I mean NEVER settle on the first offer...you gotta look out for your best interests as you well know they will want to pay a depreciated value of the car as it's "old". They will fail (on purpose) to take into account that they cannot just run to the dealer and buy replacement parts/car. Do your own homework so you have ammunition to fire back at them as far as quotes and pricelines. And lets not forget lost wages, medical issues and the like...it could get ugly...be prepaired for the worst and be pleasently surprised IF it goes well....

I would see what the tone of the insurance company is prior to aquiring a law dog...if it feels weird, get one.

Finally, the insurance company has a responsibility to return the victim of the crash to the state he/she was prior to the crash....notice I have never refered to the incident as an accident. It was not an accident; if the ins. co. refers to it as such politly correct them and remind them that the driver of said vehicle willingly ran that stop sign and "crashed" into you negligently.

Salty has a bunch of very good points of advice here. When a woman on a cell phone ran into the rear end on my pristine '87 (sorry not an oldie), the adjuster wanted to know if I wanted a check and junk the car. I said the indicident (not accident) was NOT my fault and if she'd been driving her car instead of gabbing on the cell, nothing would have happened to my car. I said, keep the check and put my car BACK THE WAY IT WAS before she hit me.

They fixed and painted half of the car, paid my hospital (mainly X-rays) and gave me a small check for "pain & suffering."

MOST "accidents" wouldn't happen if people wouldn't drive like they hadn't gotten tehir driver's licenses from Sears & Roebuck. End of rant.

you're right........the important thing here is that Pops is o.k., but it's a damned shame that the Stude took the hit!!!! i'm with others that hope the kid's truck is the worse for the wear, Jay!!!! that Stude was really brand new given the mileage on it and it would have been a hoot for years to come. and the search begins again, eh?!

So far so good, one adjuster looked at the car today and another is due tomorrow.

Pops had been to see the doctor and not sure on the lawyer part, we will see how things shake out first.

Unfortunatly the other vehicle was a 4x4 pickup and it got hit behind the rear wheel and the only damage was to the bedside and bumper. If it makes you feel better; that bumper was ****ed up!

To shorten up a lo-o-o-ong story, I found a replacement Studebaker at an auction in Hamilton, Ill. Monday and brought it home yesterday. It's a '63 Lark with a six and slush box- oughta be a real performer! Over a long time period, we'll put the best of the Cruiser together with the Lark to make a ******* 'Baker that will run pretty good.

Bringin' the new one home, I was running down the Interstate and had a white Chebby van doin' some hang time beside me. When I looked over to see what was goin' on , I got a thumbs-up with a big grin from a nice lookin' lady, and they pulled away. Then , I noticed the FH (Funeral Home) on the plate. I kinda had mixed emotions at that, so I pulled over to check the tie downs to make sure they weren't happy with potential business!

I'm sure Da Tinman will be on here posting some pics. It's a Californicated car (I found the window sticker in the trunk; it sold for $2371.23 new) and it's in a lot better shape than the Steady Breaker.

Wow, that's very sad. That car sacrificed itself to keep your pops safe, what a great car. Glad your pops was alright.

This car is really nice, it has a couple bad spots but nothing like the other car. It has a bit of rust on the bottoms of the rockers and some surface rust in places.

V8 and T5 are also in the plans.

How much can we do? I just got a lead on a Stude that was parked in a back yard 10-15 years ago that may have a usable front clip. I guess that I'll check it out- maybe just turn it over for some scratch if it's good. We also saw a Hawk with no engine or ******, saggin' headliner- ready made rat rod (please don't flame me for that!); it was right there in downtown Hamilton.

Breeder- lotta stuff would have sold higher in a more urban area. How about a '47 Crosley sedan that was intact, lookin' good, and driveable for $7000. '52 Buick sedan, solid, engine quiet as a church mouse (didn't see it sell) '26 Ford Model T coupe solid, unmolested sheetmetal (great patina!), good gl***, engine ran when it was parked 50 years ago, wooden spoke wheels had no sign of termites, tires even looked good- and they held air! I disremember the sale price- old age gettin' to me. The sale bill is still up on their site along with pics for those that are interested- Sullivanauctioneers.com. Ya shoulda been there- it was too wet to cut beans anyway!

Great looking Lark. Must be young guys who think the P-N-D-L-R shifter is strange. Those are the ones who have to find D or R on my Hawk. My Lark is eaiser. Push in the pedal. Move stick to left and up for first.
