I got this 50 Merc about a month and a half ago from and old time east coast hot rodder named Foxie Elder who was a founding member of the Pennsylvania Vagabonds car club. Foxie has terminal cancer and decided to sell this car after having it for almost 25 years. He wanted it to go to a good home and I was kinda taken back that he sold it to me, a younger guy, because he was a fanatic about it and is very fussy.

It has a 25 year old paint job and all the usual custom treatment..lowered hard, shaved handles, rounded hood corners, lake pipes, skirts, 54 Merc headlight rings frenched in, 57 Caddy hubcaps, dummy spots, nosed, chrome plated garnish moldings out of a Monterey,48 chevy tail lights molded in, and a 54 Chevy grill put together by Gene Winfield. The flatty was replaced at some point over the years with a rebuilt 351 Ford motor with a mild cam. It has old style echo cans in the back and original Cherry Bombs still on it. It runs and sounds great. Since I've had her home I pulled those flames out from behind the grill, rewired a few things, and have done some other odds and ends.

I have always wanted a chopped Merc but just cant get myself to put it under the knife. I am thinking I should just let it be as is and drive the pants off it. What do you think?

Out of respect leave it alone. Car Looks Killer, chop one up later down the road. My only nit pick would be to loose the flames behind the grill. Enjoy your new car.

I would just leave perfection alone and she also has some history behind her.

its only metal....right:D car does look good. i think it would look better with a haircut:)

good score. outta respect. just drive it and enjoy it for a while.

  9. There are plenty of other Merc's to chop. Leave this one as is as a monument to the original owner. He is the one that choose you to be the keeper of the torch.

Very nice car. Sorry to hear the seller is so very ill. If it will make you feel better, drive it for a while and ***uming you still talk to the seller, gently ask him if he ever thought about chopping it and if so, get his approval.

That's really a nice rice! I wouldn't chop it. Looks great the way it is. Don't care for those things on the headlights though. How about some more pic's,back, maybe the interior?

How about I add you to the HAMB Merc Club?

NEVERMIND! Just noticed you're already on the list, hahaha!

    Jerry,
Don't chop it. I would work towards making it more traditional by losing the radials and other modern modifications, but mainly I would drive it. Looks like you have TWO nice cars in the stable now, a hot rod and a Kustom!

There is only one thing that Merc needs. My name on the ***le! :D

  21. I'm all for chopping everything in sight.

But I would not want to see that one chopped.

There is something very special about the stance etc on it.

Leave it alone and drive it heaps.

    .

  22. its a beautiful car man , leave it be and drive the snot out of it!

  23. If your Merc was mine, which it's definitely never gonna be, I would loose the chrome thingies stuck over the headlamps, put my *** behind the wheel and drive the wheels off it.
    Chop it???
Never in my life time. I'd preserve that piece of history in honor of it's previous owner and in good taste.

chopped mercs are a dime a dozen. be different and leave it as is. probably be the only stocker that many folks will ever see.

Damn that car looks really familiar. Does the car have alot of chrome/stainless under the hood and have a neon sign that says mr. neon? You sir have a very difficult decision on your hands. If it was mine(I couldn't be that lucky) I would leave it as is,maybe change little things but keep the original. later shawn

Agreed, the stance and top are perfect as is. A great piece of hot rod history, just drive the piss out of it.

Nice car, you could drive it the way it is and be proud of it. But if it were mine I would chop it, nothing radical just a nice mild chop to make it my own.

#1 Chopped Mercs are NOT a "dime a dozen"...

#2 That's NOT a "stocker",knucklehead!!!!! Maybe you should look at the 1st post again...

I too hope he leaves it unchopped, but NOT because they're everywhere. Becuase it looks great the way it is!
