I'd like to put a pair of original Flipper-style hubcaps on my car, not the re-pops. I remember ones that had a single horizontal bar, and five or six ridges around the outside edge -- Anybody remember what make, model, year, they originally came on?
Aftermarket. But Cadillac had a single bar hubcap in 1936-37.. and most likely that was the one that inspired the people who created the aftermarket pieces. Several companies made them, including George DuVall. He might have been the first one to create/design them... 41 Ford in the middle... George Du Vall...
As far as I know (remember ?) the commonly seen 'caps you describe were aftermarket wheelcovers.........I had believed they were modeled after a Cadillac wheelcover from the 30's ('33 - '36 area) because I had seen a picture of one with them, but I just took a moment to check my Standard Catalog of American Cars and there is none pictured of that style. It is possible they were ALWAYS an aftermarket accessory, but if not, i'm betting on Caddy.
I've run into a couple of originals over the years. One with a big dent and half the bar gone, the other OK but the bar part is potmetal and pitted/needs rechrome. I'd plan to either get real lucky or pay big money for nice originals, I suspect they're not going to be easy to find.
I got a set of 5 for sale $200 , old original 16" . 2 or 3 are decent . If you are interested pm me and I'll send you a picture .
American Rodder... but I have no idea what year or issue#.. I only have a set of photo copies. Would love to know as well... I really like the article and would love to have the magazine instead of only photo copies. So anybody knows?
These are mounted on 15" rims. I've found a few over the years but never any that fit Ford wheels. Mostly oddball wheels that nobody knows what they fit. I simply cut the Ford hub cap base out of a dented donor 40s hub cap and welded it to the back of the original style flipper cap. The full wheel disk flipper hub cap came along in the 50s. They have been repopping them for years. There was more than one manufacturer of the early flipper caps.
heres a set that was on ebay recently, just to give you an idea of what there getting for them. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/e...0260513100&viewitem=&sspagename=STRK:MEWAX:IT
