Shame that they were pushed over the side but what damage have they done to the river?

Wow is right. The weather put a nice oxide layer on the steel but the rest of those things is completely solid!

So do you suppose that these vehicles were simply ghost-ridden off the edge of the cliff and left to wither?

I would think that a lotta critters (harmful and non-harmful) reside in that steel...any rattle snake or scorpion sightings while you were down there?

  7. I HAVE A BASIC PLAN FOR REMOVAL OF ITEMS
which is easier up the hill or down the river ?

    1.
seeing as that kids ballon from colorado is no longer in use and with a better tether any peice could be floated out in a controlled way ez
    2.
the rigging from the toyota tundra commercials thats left over could be used as a chute and pulley system to carefully pluck the gems out as needed

    3.
having a large group of billygoats rafted to the river edge by the pile tying cable leads to them and the putting thier feed/ females at the top of the ravine and voila all the lines needed for pulling up treasure are run
    4.
have mr gore declare it a hazard / archealogical site / crime scene ,that way every piece is brought out as if it was from the a mummys tomb. preserved and handled like gold

other than that these pictures will do

'Bout the only thing I recognized was the grill from the '56 F100.

Pretty cool, I love exploring and finding old treasures like that. Sad, but cool.

It was standard practice around here to riprap the river with wrecks to stabilize the banks for many years. Based on the old photos I've seen that practice probably ended around WW II. Scrap metal became more valuable for the war effort. Later on the nearest gully on the back 40 made a convenient place to push the wrecks.

Yeah, a lift helicopter for a couple of hours (like on that air logging show). If you had every car you wanted pre cable slinged and ready to go, the turnaround to lift each car to the top would be quick. All the small parts laying around that you wanted, could be pre packed and secured in the cars to be lifted. You could do a lot of cars in a couple of hours. Flatbed and loader at the top of the cliff and away they go.

Not sure much there is worth the investment as most look beat-51 Merc 4 dr. shoebox Ford, Stde 4 dr., etc. Gotta wonder if there's any coupe/roadster bodies underneath all the pickups and 4 doors!!??
Maybe apply for a government grant for the cleanup, LOL.

Looks like even the local school district used it for dumping their old school buses!

Looks like a fun hike. Any other car dumping locations up/down river?

While I love abandoned old cars and think its art,I think this is mostly an eyesore. What a beautiful place.Too bad all the old scrap metal was dumped there. Some of that stuff is valuable as a parts source, but mostly all of it needs to be cleaned out and recycled.Stimulus money should be spent on that, give it to hotrodders to dig it out and separate it into recoverable and scrap.

In pic 11 looks like roadster/coupe quarter there in the center behind the gray box.
Sure looks to be a place to find some small items.

Yes you are right it is an eyesore. A beautiful eyesore. The Bear river runs through southern Idaho, Northern Utah, and I believe even into Wyoming, and it has some beautiful stretches along it, but since it has been used for agriculture, power generation, and recreation for decades with no real oversight it has been used and abused. The past couple of decades have seen some real changes. I know of a couple of car riprap sections that have been removed in the last ten years. This section is not erosion control, it is pure junk dumping. Bicycles, tricycles, refrigerators, cars, buses, hay balers, tires, glass, tin cans, dead animals, anything that you imagine. It would be fun to get some government money and clean it up. I know I would be there helping. Up and over the side would be the only way out, because the gorge is fairly long. Here is a thread showing some of my pics of another part of the river about an hour away. I am currently working on freeing the Fire dome hemi from the desoto in the other thread. Thanks for the comments. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=312366

56Don & HotrodstaHell: THAT is not so far-fetched as it may SEEM at first! Gov't grant to clean it out, PLUS rodders sign up to volunteer their backs as well, IT COULD HAPPEN!!!

Would it be easier if I just posted the pics into the thread? There are quite a few so I assumed it would be better with the link, but navigating the linked album seems to be a little strange. Ideas?
