My pick-up has an ashtray, a squishy bench seat, some pedals, a steering wheel, also headlight and ignition switches. Its got a shrunken head hanging from the rearview and a pack of smokes on the dash...

I think this is a hot rod vs. kustom thing. Some day I intend to build a scary fast roadster and it won't have ANY creature comforts.
But my kustom Chevy has power brakes, power steering, power tinted windows, tilt steering, power leather bucket seats, heat and air conditioning, and even cup holders. (Yes, polished stainless steel cup holders).
It also has insulation, wipers, and turn signals. No radio, but that was basically a lack of planning on my part (A/C took up the space I intended to use.) It would have cruise control, too, if I could have figured out how to use it from the donor vehicle I got most of the other stuff out of without spreading ugly all over the engine.

I have never regretted any of this. I never get two hours into a drive and think "gee, I wish I didn't have really good air conditioning" or "golly, I wish I had to hold the wheel tighter on bumpy turns" or "gosh, if only I had to push harder on the brake pedal to stop this thing!"

I drive this car a lot. In all conditions. With my little girl in the back seat. I've owned cars with none of these things before and it's not the end of the world but the way I see it is if you're going to the trouble of reconstructing a car from the ground up and you've got a perfectly good donor car sitting there with all this stuff in it and what you don't use will just go to the crusher, USE IT!

But if it were a Model A coupe it would be a whole different story. I wouldn't care about most of this stuff.

in the off topic I took the AC out, weighs a ton, hadn't worked in ten years anyway, I have the two manual roll down AC units and the vent windows that pop open in back. I can't see the point in calling a heater a creature comfort, it's hard to see out the window when it's fogged up all the dam time. I drive with the windows down all the time, unless it's pouring rain in, so I enjoy turning the heat on full to keep from freezing my hands off when it's cold out. Radio isn't a necessity but i like my music, put in a small system to enjoy it decently, all of it hidden but the radio face built into the dash. I HATE power windows, all of the dam ones on the 98 are tore up again, try 100 bucks a window for each regulator. I hate slushboxes too, Just no fun having the tranny deciding when to shift. The other up side to a five speed is my wife can't drive my car. Still hard to hear the radio with that old four banger going through cherry bombs. sounds good though. As far as wipers i guess it matters where you are, We get so much rain here and foggy wet conditions, they are necessary. I also put in the xm radio thing, it's mounted up out of sight in the headliner. lets me listen to any decade of music I want, I would turn it back on while working in the garage, but the tin roof and pine trees makes it not work.

Still in the buiding process but I do have some creature comforts for it. A/C
& Heat, PS, PB, Elec. Wipers, automatic and a radio. Other than those it will be what come with it. Original seats, crank widows, rear etc.

As I've aged I have discovered "the older I get the more comfort I want".

I picked up one of those things you can plug power, speakers and an iPod into for my C10, but I also still have that whole electrical issue causing my alternator to not charge my battery. So for right now, I listen to the exhaust and the arguments between good and evil in my bean.

Sounds like I'm not alone. Not having creature comforts is a comfort sometimes.

  21. this thread makes me wonder how old all the "hard core" Hamber's are...and how far and how often they drive for more then 30 minutes at a time without getting out of their hot rods....:rolleyes::rolleyes:.........the earlier coupes and roadsters i can see being stripped down as being part of "THE LOOK"...the lead sleds and such, well its about attitude there i think..true hot roddin attitude....

my topolino's done it's share of stripped down time...most of it's life it lived in a garage and at the drag strip....time for a upgrade of goodies for the cross the usa cruise it has ahead of it....

    creature comforts????

heat is fairly a main stay up here...so i'm looking for a second vintage heater to throw in Lil Beast...traded off the last one ....

windows....topolino's came with door glass that slide..front to rear,,less then 1/2 the window opened...so i'm going with up and down glass..otherwise i'ld be bangin my elbow every time i wanted to rest my arm on the door or hang it out the window,,,

tunes???everything i ever drove has had tunes....helps keep the tits from bitchin...ya know they want to hear tunes when ya run outta gas:D:D:D ...

wippers, some day...the cowl is fucked up from the old openings being filled in...

disc brakes up front......just cause i hated everything i ever owned that had drums up front when it rained...

    seat, i got a cushy old mustang rear seat, feels nice,,,,{yeah i rode the HD on a ridgid frame for lots of years}

carpet, probably, i like drivin bare footed in the summertime...:p

tires..........love the pie crust cheaters for the look...can't hardly see the topo without them..BUT.......so far i'm not finding what i need size wise to fit Lil Beast....30-31 tall......10-12 wide...maybe radir will get the new 12-00 x 15's on the market before i gotta buy something else to finish the frame welding.......

I am 61 and I have drivin my roadster 280-320 miles with out stopping for gas. No problem! But then I put a lot of time and energy in to the seating on my roadster and it is very comfortable.
    18 MPG at 70 MPH X 21 gallons = around 360 mile range

No A/C, no radio, no heater (bent the vent pipe on the engine towards the firewall for a little winter heat)...put a radio in the '34 sedan delivery because dates complained about not having one ("no radio, want me to sing? No, I'll stop complaining!")

But I lived in Southern California, so do not judge anyone living elsewhere for wanting heat, A/C, stereo, etc...besides, we didn't do the long drives that folks do today, because car usually broke down before we could get far.

An input who from someone who clearly doesn't have a clue how tough the average over-60 roadster driver is. I'm only a young pup (57), but have put 300 miles between stops lots of times. Your equipment has to be designed for it, and you have to want to get down the road. Not that hard; a LONG way from bullshit.

Shit! 300mi on damn near any roadster driver is tough. My seat was designed to fit me for just this reason. You gotta be able to get down the road comfortably and since I can't control the weather and don't have a top to get out of the rain/sun, the seat better be comfy.

  28. manual brakes
    manual stearing
    muncie 4 speed
    no a/c or heater

but I am a little spoiled, I have a radio and carpeted floor mats................can go about 260 miles on a tank (16 gal)

Me too, that's what a Hot rod is about.

  30. Since I am building a wagon, it's going to have an automatic, power disc brakes (no ps), probably A/C and heat (I like to be comfortable in my enclosed car, in both 110 degree weather AND five-degree weather!), gauges, and hell, even carpeting! Plus, that annoying shit that the LAW says you have to have, like wipers, lights, horn, turn signals, tires with tread...you know, the little things.

Oh, and seat belts, because they have saved me from certain death otherwise at least TWO times in my life!

I want to be able to drive my car in COMFORT for more than ten miles at a time!
