Also found this Corvair in the pits at Langhorne on the 3 wide site, they're not sure who it is; and neither am I.

Hey George, is this a Cromwell X9 ? If so, I don't remember it even though I was there. The way it sits and the way the body is psositioned on the frame; it looks almost like the ill fated #10 "Log Roller" team car to the Kozella "Woodchopper "#15, but that car lasted, I believe, only one race.

 

the #4 is DON MOON at Danbury conn.

 

No, Rich! That's not a Long Island car. It came out of New England. I remember the car, I was there that day, too. Don't know who owned it, but I think it was driven by Eddie Flemke....or was it Leo Cleary? Hmmm!
(and the C-88 in the background would Ray Sitterly)

Mike's Corvair debut was at Pocono in 1971. The car still had the number 69 on it,from it's previous owner, Junoir Miller.The 6 and the 9 were closed up to form 8's. Car was dark green with a white vinyl roof. After Pocono it was painted white w/ a black vinyl top, and was run in addition to his more famous Coach,until the Coach was sold.
In 1972, the body was changed to a Pinto.

Are you sure these are the same chassis? The white car looks to be tube framed and the green car looks like a 57 Chevy style frame. Although the bodies look the same.

The green one is the same car as the white one in the post with the others. I don't recall ever seeing the Corvair with the rounder 88s, but that one looks more like the one that later got the Pinto body. Miller's Corvair had independent front suspension, and Mike's Coach had a solid front axle and leaf springs. At the time Mike was learning a lot from Sonney Seamon, and was starting his own fab shop. So, what you have there, might be the car Mike built and improved on after Miller's.
I took a pic of the green one at Pocono (but is a real far shot) and I have a pic of it being white at D-C Sales w/ #x88 on it(and that one is blurry)
I also don't remember him running the Gremlin bodied car, but I hung out at his shop when he ran the Vega,owned by Al Schutt.

I know the picture you're looking for. The "Shoe's" car was owned by one of my racing buddies Al Kugler. I helped crew on the car at Syracuse that weekend. Frankie Hartman helped get the sponsorship for the car.

I just looked for the wreck pic in Shoemaker's book, but it's not there. A pic of the 24s car at Syracuse before the wreck is on the back cover. Kugler is on the left with his arms folded.

Why don't ya' call Al at Kugler Red Barn Antiques in Colonie. I'm sure his has what ya' need.

 

Really makes one wonder where all those old race cars ended up. Probably sitting in barns and pastures somewhere...
