Got the flathead and transmission in my new truck

A few weeks ago I picked up a 1950 F1 out of the classifieds. The engine and transmission had been yanked for another project. But I had a pretty fresh Merc so it made perfect sense.

The only missing piece was the transmission. Word went out and within a week Tuck had found a toploader in a yard he has been going to for years. This whole truck had been picked clean but somehow over the years no one thought to take this trans. It was mine. And Tuck knew it. He was just out looking so with no tools... he pulled the thing with his bare hands. haha.

Now the truck was in Minnesota and the transmission was in Kanada. My pops-in-law wanted to make the marathon run with me to Owatonna to get the truck but we couldn't afford the extra four hours it would take to get to Kanada and back with the trans. This was a full bore run making it up, loading the truck, and getting back in a single day. My brother-in-law went as well. It was so rad. I wish I had taken a camera. Thanks Dad. (in-law)

But the transmission – I guessed I was going to have to ship it but that was cool. Then by some weird coincidence both Tuck and povertyflats were going to be at the Hunnert. What were the odds? Crazy. The way everything came together was truly bats, man. So he dropped the box at Ben's house and I had everything ready to roll the following Monday. Thanks to everyone for making that happen.

So I Spent this past Saturday completely going through the toploader for the truck. New bearings and seals. Chose all of the best parts I had, measured the case, input and output shafts then added a .035" shim at the rear bearing to bring everything back to spec. Truly blueprinted. The cluster, NOS synchros, everything.

I have been working on the engine for a few weeks. This is the Merc that was in my modified. It got a fresh green paint job, the same heads torqued with the same wrench and socket using the same book I stole from Ryan years ago to get the sequence right, new intake, generator bracket and a few new parts I made.

Spent Sunday morning at the hardware store and NAPA and by mid afternoon everything was assembled and ready to go in. Only a few minor scratches in the fresh paint and it was in place. Here it is.

Closing in and making my way around the driver's side. Still have to install the fan, belts, etc. and finalize the road draft assembly. The early manifold had been modified for it and it's going to look really clean.

I made the throttle return spring bracket and carb linkage. Still have to get the fuel pump stand sorted too. One of the bolts has been tapped out a size bigger. And you can just make out the hole for the road draft behind the water neck. I fabbed an offset pipe to go underneath the manifold and the reworked stock tube will plug right into the top sealing everything up tight.

The interior was in great shape. Going to run the speedometer and a mechanical oil pressure under the dash for now and will work on getting a voltage drop to make use of all of the gauges.

So I'm headed out to the garage to finish the road draft assembly and install the driveshaft if I have time. The bench is going to the interior shop tomorrow. This is going to be my daily so the coupe has to be put on hold for a short while. But with an official shop truck things are going to get nuts when I start on it again.

  16. Trucks rule. It needs a gun rack though.

very cool, i heard you bought it from Larry.

If you need a voltage drop you can snag em out of 60's ford trucks if i remember correctly, they are bolted right to the gauge cluster of those years trucks, they still continued with 6 volt gauges but put voltage drops on em, dunno why, and you can run 2 gauges off of one of those voltage drops. they look like a mini horn relay, one stud and one blade connection.

Looks just fine to me!! I'd get it done quick and drive it every chance I'd get. I had a 52 F-1 for a long time.
