I'm considering swapping an ls1/lq4 into the 54, anybody have any experience with glasspacks on them? I'm thinking either cherry bombs or purple hornies, probably leaning towards the cherry bombs. Unless I can find a set of the old smithys. Looking for that classic warm, mellow hotrod sound at idle & cruising that gets nasty when I get on it

    anyone?

Personally I've never heard an LSX that didnt sound good, from a doscile 5.3 up to a fully cammed and nasty LS6, they've all sounded good through whatever exhaust was on them, Magnaflow, Flowmaster, Chambered tubes (similar to the glasspacks), Borla etc. I work in a GM dealer so I've seen quite a few come through here, I'm sure no matter what you put on there it'll have a good sound coming out of it! (can't speak for open pipes..)

I don't know, I think those engines are great because of the haul-ass potential, but they always sound like a generic late model Chevy truck with exhaust. Kind of like how you can tell a 5.0 Mustang from blocks away just by it's exhaust note.

My buddy has a mildly hopped up one with a six speed in a '73 Trans Am, which is way cool, but it still sounds like a Chevy truck. Just the nature of the engine, I guess.

I have the flowmaster hushpowers on my LS1 and I think it sounds good. It is mellow at idol and has a good sound when on it. It also does not make you def driving down the highway.

I'm running true duals on my LS1 camaro with an X pipe and sweet thunder chambered mufflers. The tone is amazing...

I believe the LS Chevy engine has the same firing order as the Ford newer Modular V-8's and the older 5.0? So they should sound the same, right?
A V-8 fires every 90 degrees, does the firing order affect the sound?

The modular mustangs have a very unique sound, however sound nothing like LS engines. The aluminum LS engines tend to be quite raspy sounding. At WOT there is no mistaking the sound of an LSx.

  9. I used hushpowers on my 55 Caddy with a 455 Olds. Perfect mellow tone. I did a LS1 swap in a 69 Chevelle and put a flowmaster kit behind it. It doesn't sound like the new trucks do with an aftermarket exhaust.

mill the head a little bit, put a nice choppy cam in it, bolt ons and a good tune and you will be around 400rwhp with an lq4. good motors, strong, versatile and dependable

  11. I think glasspacks sound like monkey butt on SBC's. Blatty.

Not sure on an ls1, maybe check out www.ls1sounds.com if they are around.

moroso spiral flows sound tough. i had magnaflows last time sounded good. bullets are loud if the car is bigtime cammin.

I turned around to see where the hot rod with the great sound was, and it was a stock chevy delivery van idling through a parking lot. I was instantly impressed when I drove it. in a 6000 lb van, the 5.3 fucking hauled. stock 3" single pipe. Really surprised at the sound, performance.

flow masters are for muscle cars/street rods and sound like crap to me. 3 choices.... porters, smithys or glass packs.

Just on a note seeing how we are talking about hot rod exhaust on modern engines. I just fired a 4.6 3 valve mustang in a resto mod project. I put duals and flowmasters on it and it sounds awefull, like a old dump truck:confused: I will have to put a balance tube in and resonators on the back and hope for the best.

I have dynomax race bullets on my lq4. Pretty much an overgrown glasspack. 3" in 3" out but only 16" long. Personally I wouldn't put them on. I would run a single chamber muffler of some sort. They usually give a really deep throaty rumble and sound insane when your foot is through the floor! Here's a vid of my car for reference.

1-8-7-2-6-5-4-3-LS has a cadillac style to it
429 cad -GM (Cadillac) 429 V8 Engine firing order: 1-8-7-2-6-5-4-3 Distributor rotation: clockwise ...

  19. Here would be my suggestions:
sick: dynomax bullets, one chamber flowmasters, spiral flow moroso

    refined: borla xr1, magnaflow 4x9's,

    quiet: 3 chamber flows,

deep: edelbrock chambered, dynomax round mufflers (not bullets)

Just to clear something up, the LS and LQ series motors, although similar to the true LSX, are not the same. The actual LSX is race bred and is barely streetable without a standalone computer. The LS and LQ series are excellent for hot rods. But as Unsafe6 said about his 4.6L Ford, you gotta have a crossover, i've found that the x-pipe works best, and in the L series Chevy's, they have to be able to exhale. Running the same size exhaust all the way back really inhibits what the engine is capable of in performance and sound. I recently sold my OT Chevy 2500HD that had the 6.0L LS in it, and I had put set of headers on it that went from 3" at the collector to 4" for the Magna-Flow exhaust. It sounded so beautiful, like a Ramone's song through a Bose stereo........from idle all the way through the gears. Just my $.07 cents.

Yup, I just put Porter's behind a SBC last night in the 36......FANTASTIC! Sounds great. I couldn't be more pleased! Clark at Porter can make you whatever length and spec you need. great company to deal with.

Thank's for the shoutout John. Good to here you like the sound, nothing beats that vintage sound.

  23. cherry bombs are good, or smitty's, or put on a tractor muffler that sounds cool like on mine.

  24. LSX = the GMPP big displacement block
LSx = generic term for any LS-series engine. Treat the 'x' as a variable (1,2,3,6,7,9).

You know BOSE is marketing hype and not all that wonderful, right?

Personally, I wouldn't put glasspacks on an LS-engine, nor would I put one in a hoodless, fenderless, car.

I like my single Spintech, two-in-two-out with a crossover. The thing sounds really great at all rpm ranges.

Right on! They are basically the same engine block just different bores, strokes & different compression ratios.

awesome thanx for all the replies guys, there seems to be quite a rift in opinion here

I hadn't heard of ls1sounds.com, definitely helpful in getting an idea of what I'm looking for!

as it stands right now, I think I just may order a set of porters when I get the engine swapped in there & see how they sound

as long as you've chimed in here, any recommendations as to size, length, crossover or x pipes, etc?

If it was mine I would run 2 1/4" pipe with my standard PM-40225 mufflers.
As far as crossovers or x pipes go I don't put many of those on. I never noticed a differance in performance, but I do notice it quites the car down with them on.
