Hopefully the yard owner kicks the bucket so that I can attend the auction.

That's a sin. I got half way thru your photos and then stopped. I will never understand why folks won't sell stuff that will eventually just be crushed or rusts to dust.

  4. Thanks for the great pictures. This is what real junkyards used to look like.I sure do miss them.

  5. Seems like a complete fucking waste to me. Collect a bunch of vintage tin, don't sell any and let it turn to shit. Whats the point of this thread?

He who dies with the most toys wins. Right?

  7. Or he who turns the toys to junk and then dies is a moron.

It kind of looks like the yard I was in today but at least everything was for sale in this one.

Well SAID, Random! It seems ironic, poignant AND almost artistic, seeing these classics gradually being reclaimed by Mother Nature, doesn't it? I was ALWAYS moved by touring an old-car junkyard, MUCH like walking in a human cemetery!

I would rather spend a day at any cool junkyard or auction than at a car show somewhere. It's the thrill of the hunt..... "

    Jimi: WELL-said, PlowBoy!!! Me too!

I like this thread. Though it started 2 years ago, the gripes & sentiments seem to be consistent with gripes and sentiments stated ALL THE TIME about junkyards & junkyard owners. I want to say one thing: Some of the curmudgeons who are sitting on old cars and "letting them rust down" bought these cars back when NOBODY wanted them. They wouldn't even be around for us to get stainless trim, a bumper, tail light lense, etc., off of IF these old guys hadn't bought them and kept them SOMEHOW. The world is FAR from a perfect place, so junkyards sure aren't gonna be, either. Just be glad ANY old cars are left -- ESPECIALLY if you live east of the Mississippi and north of the Mason-Dixon line.

Add: A NUMBER of guys have posted here about people acting like assholes when approaching junkyard owners. "You catch more flies with sugar than you do with vinegar," is the old saying. Try minding your manners when approaching ANYbody, even a "junk" man!

  12. And the world would be a better place with less hoarders. Some people are not going to part with anything they have no matter how much you want to butter them up. Hoarding is a mental condition and a sad one at that. Like i said before i think this kind of thing is just kind of depressing to us that would be willing to pay for some of this stuff , fix it and not let it turn to complete junk. But the bottom line is it's his stuff and he can do with it what he wants.

MillScruff: Yup, you are right about at least some of the hoarders (I sometimes think I have a touch of that! LOL). Beyond being as polite as you can, SOME people aren't gonna budge (until they budge to the funeral home).

So, there's no need to agonize over an intractible situation. It's better to remember the location, say, "Oh, well" (for the time being) and MOVE ON to an owner who's more receptive. And, strange as it seems to US car fanatics, some people have one or two oldies around with a ton of SENTIMENTAL attachment, SO they just don't want to let go. If you leave your name & number with them, surprisingly, they sleep on it a while, THEN suddenly call you to come get it -- sometimes cheap!!!

  15. There is a guy near me who has 5,000 cars. He wont let you look. He does occasionally sell stuff though. You have to phone him tell him what you want to buy. He will look get back to you and tell you if he has it and how much. Then if you want to buy he will make you a appointment to come view that specific item. Why because people who want to look spend hours looking and then never buy anything. He stated to me folks act like it is a museum. Also many lookers are thieves who come back later. He does crush about 300 every year. Not married the yearly crushed cars make his living. They used to be open 6 days a week hired help ect. Just got tired of dealing with the public and gov red tape. In the end this is still America and we are free to do as we please with our property (to a certain extent) OldWolf

  16. Question? Really stop and give this some serious thought. This junk yard Run you are making. Is it a buying trip? Are you bringing a wads of cash and dragging trailers? Or are you just going looking wasting the owners time and making him hard bitten eventually leading to the nothing for sale mentally. I know i wont let a whole car load of people swarm around my yard. I you are serious about wanting to buy come alone know what your looking for be prepared to pay and take home with you immediately. OldWolf

  17. What a waste, it's a shame how some hoarders would rather just let that kind of precious metal rust away to nothing then to let some body restore it back to glory. There were alot of very popular cars in that group. I bet 10-15 years ago, alot of them weren't a lost cause

As you all know we are the orig recyclers if this guy does not want to comply his deal, how much stuff are you all hording in you garages till ya die ....think about it............ spent a year pickin up after my older bro tryed to get it out made more off scrap too many cheap pricks!!!!!wastin my time my 2 cents

  19. Of course you realize that if people didn't hoard old cars, the cars they have would have been crushed 20, 30, 40 years ago, right?

Everyone dies eventually, it's just a matter of being there to buy from the estate. A couple years ago we bought about 40 cars from a guy when he got too old to care for himself and had to sell off the cars he'd spent something like 60 years gathering.

I'm really torn by all of this. If he sells parts cheap, they would go on ebay. So why not sell them himself? Why not do something? spite can be a strange monster, as can the hoarding motivation. there was a guy in IA i heard about that last year or the year before lost his whole property to the city. They came in and crushed hundreds of cars. I guess he wouldn't sell any down to the day.

I also know a guy who hoards GTO parts. Spends hundreds of dollars a month in storage unit fees. Won't really sell anything. Eventually, when he dies, there will be a ton of GTO parts on the market. But at least those are all inside.

lots of good points made here.

Great thread Corngrower32, even if it took me a year to find it on here. lol.
Love that 1st ford you posted. Looks like a 40? My parents are from Ohio & drove to Calif in 1956 in a 39 Ford standard that had a 50 Olds engine in it. The car was an original 50's HotRod. Is still out here in Cali somewhere. Anyways, that Ford in the boneyard brought back great memories! Thanks,Brad

  28. That's a 1960-1964 Opel Rekord Olympia (codename P2) that was a really popular car in Europe and they are still easy to find in Germany and Holland
but not worth a lot overhere.
Nice to see one in the USA.

  29. I don't recall ever seeing one before. Lots of oddball stuff shows up in that j/y.
