Is the Juki DDL 8300 a good machine for occasional interior work? Maybe up to 6 layers of naugahyde? Does anyone have any exp. with a S.E.W. Line GC6D? I just want to be able to do my own stuff and not have to work on the machine all the time. I don't know anything about this. I'm ready to learn.
Although you may be able to sew through multiple layers of naugahyde, it won't be very easy with that machine. A walking foot machine is what you want to look for to do upholstery. Sometimes you can find good deals on those machines. Dave
I did the seats of my 51 with a machine from walmart, it's a brother and was like 120 bucks and worked great. I used 4 layer marine vinyl, just use wax paper on both sides of the materiel and it will slide through real cool.
I agree with Richard, i have practice with different sewing machines. After two years of trying i find out that a machine with walking foot is the only thing that works!! I bought a new one (industrial machine) payd a lot, but i do some upholstery work now and then, so it will pay itself back... grtz
I bought an industrial strength regular machine and finally had to go with a walking foot. It's just so much easier to work with than a regular machine for upholstery stuff. Check into Highlead. That's what I ended up getting. Make sure you don't use the standard motor though on these industrial walking foot machines as some of them are powerful enough to be in your car! Durn thing went from 0-1000 stiches a second with almost no foot movement. Went with the DC adjustable motor and have much more control.
