History Resurrected Dream Rod in Rod & Custom

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by seesko, Oct 26, 2009.

  1. There's a great article in the latest Rod and Custom about Mr. Moriarity's amazing resurrection of the Car Craft Dream Rod. One of my favorite cars of all time. He truely performed automotive alchemy on that car.
It had been transformed into the Tiger Shark a few years after the original build. A lot of the original car had been discarded:(. I have the AMT/MPC 1/25 scale reissue of the Tiger Shark and was comparing the model with the pictures of the restored Dream Rod. It would be a major undertaking just to bring the model back to it's Dream Rod glory let alone do it in 1:1 scale.

Mark did a stellar of job saving the car from dusty obscurity. :) A monster tip of the hat to Mark and his dedication to preserving these great time pieces.

    Hey Mark,

Kongrats on the article, but I wanted a lot more. I enjoyed listening to you at
the Starbird show, You were telling about all of the research that it took to get
it back to "the way it was." How long did it take you to find out what the hinges
were off of? Do you have any build pictures or anything else. I bet guys on the
HAMB would love to see it. Thank you for going the extra mile to restore such Kool
    history.

    Happy Trails,

    Mick

I just read the article and I thought it was great..Very well written.

  13. They should do an article on that trike back there. It reminds me of the
Little Gas powered Cox trike my brother had growing up. That was G.I. Joe's
    other ride...

Congrats on the beautiful build and the great press.

Sometimes it is obvious what needs to be done with a car if it's going to be restored. But with something like this how do you decide on which version or era to base your restoration? Is it always the earliest or just your idea of the best?

Good question. I personally like Harry Bradley's version better but it's not my car.

I followed the original build in Car Craft back when and Mark's rebuild and all I can say is that it he nailed it. Maybe better now than the original.

The article was well written, Chris dug real deep into the history of the car. talked to the guys that designed it and even talked to Marianich who did the work to transform it to the Tiger Shark. My job restoring this thing was made a bit easier by recieving 50 8x10 black and white photos from Bob Larivee Jr of promotions inc. those photos were very helpful. even though I found myself looking at photos with a magnifying glass and measuring them with a caliper and scaling things up more than actually working sometimes. I trudged thru many a junkyard looking for those trunk hinges but could not find them. I knew they were hood hinges from some 63 or older car. I ended up looking on ebay and there were something like 20 pages of buy it now hood hinges and I found them within 2 hours. they were from a 1960 rambler. I had nothing but a photo to go on because the trunk was eliminated on the tiger shark

I knew it had to be the dream rod first time I saw it. When Dennis (the guy I bought it from) told me it would be "impossible to return it to the dream rod" that was like a dare or a challenge

I agree the article was well written and I didn't know anything about the Dream Rod until
pictures started pop'n up on the HAMB. I enjoyed reading about all of the history. I'm a
big fan of build pictures and its kool to see what ya had to go through to get back to the real Dream Rod condition. Love to hear about your dedication to get it right.

    Happy Trails,

    Mick

I bet this is the hardest part of restoring/recreating these old customs... the builders just used what fit, or what was laying around the shop, and now 40+ years later you have to figure out what it was , and then try and find it!

Are talking about the Tiger shark that you returned to the Dream Rod or your old suburban that you turned into your RG dually or little trailer that you turned into your RG featherlite or your extra garage that you turned into your RG 2 story warehouse complete with the Custom Auto Parts dragsterupstairs. I am confused, but to the casual observer it appears you might have it made.
