Sounds to me you got gremlins.
The only way to get rid of them is to attach a small bell to the frame.
    Good Luck.

I had the same thing happen to my car. It has a 350 hei th400 it was popping though the carb. I changed the fuel filter, fuel pump and nothing changed. I got another distributor and put that in. That fixed the problem. I would start with the easy stuff 1st then work on the hard stuff. My distributor cap was bad.

Had exactly the same problem with my Chevy truck. Turned out that the "sock" on the fuel filter had disintegrated to a mess. It would collapse and get sucked into the pickup tube and starve. Slow down and idle for a while, problem goes away until the next prolonged higher demand drive. Drove me nuts for a long time. Finally put a pickup assembly on and problem gone!

lectro fuel pump or manwell? i had a lectric one do the exact thing. One minute its chuggin away next inst bogging down. did it random for aboiut a month thought it was the filter. Finally pulled it out and set it in a bucket-o-gas. it ran for about sixish minutes and then rant outta poo. no lead in its pencil. I have fallen and cant get up. etc. put on a new one . my carbs got all happy.....yeehaw. couple a weeks later I am down on the Orgone coast and it starts up again. No Shit. Its going bbraggghhh pop braghj pop shuder good nite. So I climb under it and pull the filter i put under my old tractor tank. ( FREE what the hell)) . i knock about 2 oz's of rusty funk outta it.Have the wife blow it, (Got Pics) and put it back on. oops just membered I still need to change it. eather way partner i go with fuel starvvation.

Check the fuel pump, there is usually and internal screen which can get fouled. under low flow conditions the crap floats around in lower chamber, as the flow increases the crud gets pulled up onto the screen killing the flow, when the engine drops to idle, it drops off restoring the flow. Also I had a situation where a piece of debris was caught in the center bolt that holds the bottom of the fule filter to the housing, it is a flow through bolt that passes gas from the intake to the output side. under low flow conditions there was no problem, but get above 35 or 40 and the think would act like a flapper valve moving to close the flow down, then as i slowed down, flow would reduce and the flap would open restoring flow.

Also check the rubber hose betweenthe frame and the engine, sometimes they will look great on the outside but will collapse under vacuum at high speed.

It just sounds like you got some bad gas, it got hot and boiled in the lines a minor vapor lock issue. Especially going to a idle and it clears out for your drive home. Just put some fresh fuel in it, or find a source for pure gas no alcahol content and I bet your problem wont come back...John

I had a similar issue in a Camaro a few years ago. Turned out it was, as most people have mentioned, crap in the fuel lines and tank. And no, I didn't put it there.

Yeah, what was the problem? Inquiring minds want to know?

My truck has a similar problem. It just dies going down the road.Friends suspect the pickup sock in the 65-68 ? M*stang tank(did they have them?) of being clogged as everything else has been checked, changed or renewed.

One more vote for clogged fuel filter. I had the same issue, changed the filter and solved the problem.

Based on past experience, I would say that the mechanic fuel pump is ready to go (if you have a mechanical pump). I would also check to see if the dist. is tight, and that it is not rotating.

I would start by checking the battery cables mite be lose, broken, also check the wires and cables to the starter. I had the same thing happen in my shit box, and it turned out to be the small wire that goes to the starter.

This is one of the "benefits" of using the search function and reviving an older thread.
Situations and conditions change from then to now.
