What are you doing to make ends meet I use to be an Automotive Instructor Trainer here in Chicago and a Driver Safety Trainer for a Transportation Company . Not looking good right now .. I might have to sell the street rod I just bought ,,,
I am.Been out of work since 12-31-2008.I'm collecting unemployment and taking advantage of retraining from the unemployment office for X-Ray Tech.I'm able to collect unemployment while I go to school and they are paying for most of my schooling through a work slowdown grant. Also peddling parts for extra cash.
I sold new Chrysler/Dodge/Jeeps, you can put the rest of the picture together from that. All you can do is draw you unemployment, try to find a job, and hang on. Not letting it stop me hot rodding though.
you can only do what you can. collect unemployment, do rummage-garage sales, put out everything you don't want, someone will buy it. you need heat, have a fireplace, start cutting down trees. just basically do what you can. this economy*****s and the forecast for next year is worse as far as jobs go. somethings in life you can control and somethings you can't.
Hey donot let the economy get you down. I got laid off a $32 hr job back in 1989. Well I could not find a job that paid anything close to that so I just started selling off some of my cars to keep alive and finish another to sell. That worked well for about 10 years. Then the 1999 crash came along and you could not sell anything for a profite just like it is now. So I started doing work for others and still am. No it has not made me rich but my bills are paid on time and i get to do what i enjoy every day.
We all have nothing to worry about...the recession is over...really...I read it in the newspaper! Sorry...
Just remember you can always fall into the "oldest profession" that there is to make a little extra scratch.
I started a house of ill repute, I can't afford to hire anyone so I'm doing it by hand!!! Some times it helps to laugh.
I used to be able to buy sell trade on my corner here. Made pretty good money. Then the fuel prices caused shipping to kill a lot of internet sales. Got a job driving truck for a cattle feed lot. Now my boss cant get a big cattle feeding contract so that has slowed down. I still haul a load or two per week. Have earned less than 10 thousand so far this year. The good thing we have everything paid for. We Heat with wood. Butchered some chickens last week. We have two pigs that will be ready soon. Bought a milk cow. Trying to get to be as self reliant as i can. I am doing the things with my projects that dont cost much to do. OldWolf
I hope I can speak for all the kiwi car guys out there when I say that we really feel your pain, particularly the layoffs and redundancies you are suffering. Any Kiwi reading the posts on this board can't help but admire your collective internal fortitude in the face of some really unpleasant*****. Just know that our thoughts are with you all in these hard times, Jerry.
Unemployment ran out last month.I have work here and there .Might subject myself to an 8.00 hour job ,If I have to.I'm still hoping Home Improvements pickup, I got pissed when Our president sent a go back to school program. I can do electrical work, spackling .painting and other general contracting .Ive been doing this for over 25 years ,Right now Im peddling parts to make ends meet,
Fortunately I am retired so I am permanently unemployed and loving it, but I really feel for everyone that has families and are having to deal with the issue at hand.
I am going to remodel my kitchen this winter. The way I figure it if I spent some money instead of saving it, it will help the economy. I've got a plumber friend who is unemployed so he's going to do the plumbing work. I've got an electrican friend unemployed so he'll do all the electrical work, I'll pay them both the going rate for their time. A HAMB pal's business is flooring so he's doing my new hardwood floor. A local pal works at the local appliance store so he will get a commission on my new appliances. Then there's new cabinets, countertops, tile backsplash, drywall, 2 x 4's, etc,. If folks that are working actually spent some money smartly, trying to help out the local economy/friends, things might improve alittle for all those involved. My heart goes out to those not working. Good luck guys.
I've been out of work since January.....Good thing my Wife has a steady job! I just upgraded my license from a B to an A with all endorsements 3 weeks ago. I've sent out apps since then and I'm waiting to hear back on 3 of them. I have a test for a City of Roseville job Nov 18 and I should hear back soon on a Sacramento County job also. If I had upgraded sooner,I'd be working by now...Anyone in the SF/Sac area looking for a Class A driver???
i have been unemployed since 12/16/08 still on unemployment but when that runs out i dont know what ill do... i guess i could go back to painting and bodywork but there is no money there either... i applied for a hydraulics repair man at the local city yard and got told i was over quallified for the job... how that works i dont know... i have had to sell and junk some of my cars for bill money... still trying to sell some... i guess on the bright side i have gotten alot of repair work and remodeling done on the house so the wife is happy... luckily she has a real good job at the local hospital....
I was on temporary unemployment for the sixth time, now it's running out, they want to cut off my wifes disability and medicaid because i'm unemployed. we are basically going under a little at a time, eventually we will lose everything the way things are going. nothing I can do. nothing better to say about it. oh and the transmission in the daily driver pos started slipping today.
Fact: The economy*****s! Fact: Thousands of people are out of work! Fact: Health care is expensive and*****s! Fact: Members of the congress continue to give themselves raises, and have excellent health care! Fact: Our elected officials are bought and paid for! What to do about it? Look deep into your own sole, no one else is going to get you out of your predicament except yourself! Be strong-and Above all else be open minded-to your own abilities, and how best to utilize them. Good luck!
Let me guess you dont need a union bricklayer right . Ive only worked 160 hours this year. I feel every ones pain dont give up. My wife and I when we bought our house and figured out all of our bills. We made it work to were if Im not working we can still make all our payment on time. Just dont live out side of what you cant afford
Years ago I picked up odd jobs doing jippo construction (small remodeling, decks, etc.) out of a Dodge Omni. I worked at four different jobs to keep things together, wasn't fun but it kept my family fed and warm. I got work simply by word of mouth, talked to people who talked to people who needed stuff done. Contractors ignore small jobs because they don't make the profit on time that a bigger job does. I fixed gutters, built a wheelchair ramp, deck railing, fixed sheetrock, you name it, all out of that little Dodge Omni, so it can be done Attitude is everything, don't get caught up in the unemployment office blues, get out and look around with a bright perspective, you might see something you previously missed. Also, if there is any money available to you for retraining, give it some serious thought. I went from being a glorified laborer to an electrician after being laid off with money provided by Uncle Sam. It took relocating my family, living frugal, and studying my**** off, but in the end it paid off better than I could have ever believed.
Do you need anyone to run and fetch you a cold beer or go get pizza I can do these things like nobodys business!!!
I was unemployed a couple of times and every time I get laid off I end up having to work twice as much to make enough money to stay afloat. Right now I have a full-time gig and am doing contract work for two other places just to keep the lights on at my house. Sometimes, usually about midnight when I am cranking on a project for my 3rd job, I wonder if it is all worth it...
Got laid off two weeks ago, since August I had been working one day a week and before that 20 hours a week since the beginning of this year. Made a whopping 10 bucks and hour and I only had to drive 40 miles one way to get it. I actually make more now on unemployment than I did working! Been logging a little bit here and there and selling various things. My latest project has been getting metal bits from old bed frames, computer cases, and other random things I have laying around my place.
