"You should turn that Henry J into a gasser. That would be cool!!!" Is that a studebaker? chevy fleetline? VW square back or bug? But my favorite at the gas station a few weeks ago was "Is that a Tucker? no it's a 50 ford coupe "are you sure?" yes "Really it looks just like the car in the movie I just watched." Yup sure it's a ford with a ford motor ford wheels ford seats and ford everything else. "Oh well when is it going to be done?" They are never really done " Well why would you want a car that will never be done?" I guess because I'm poor. "well goodluck with that I like your car be safe''

Before I even get out of my car at a show, a guy walks up to me...
Hey, nice Galaxie. But that 352 is the worst engine Ford ever built. You should come over and look at my Galaxie, it has a 390.

Me: Yeah, you go over and wait by your car. I'll be right there!
    -----------------------------------------------------------------
My favorite one though was "I had a car just like your's in high school. Only it wasn't a Ford, it was a Chevy" And it wasn't a 2 door, it was a 4 door. And it wasn't blue, it was green". I couldn't even think of anything to say.

Don't feel bad, 65. My 64 Galaxie has been called an Impala more times then I care to count, and my Cammer was a Hemi, with need Ford valve covers!

I've experienced the exact opposite, I have had several bagged vehicles, to which I always hear "You got dem dar hydraulics on it? No, airride. "Well, that cain't be too safe now can it." I just walk away.

Or at car shows I hear guys explaining to their wives or kids how the hydraulics lift the truck off ground.

I've got a friend with a truck that's chopped and when aired out the doors actually touch the ground. he's had people get mad at him when he answers their question, "How do you drive that thing?" He answers, "The same way you drive your car." Fights have been started that way! :D

My old man had a '32 Packard light 8 convertible coupe when I was younger. Seems that every show some guy would come up and say he had a Ford like that once.......
He also had a 29 LaSalle, one guy came up and asked how well that Ford flathead moved that big a car......I guess ignorance is bliss

    From my current eBay listing.
"Q: Your car is neither a 210 or a Bel Air. It is a 150 series. That is the only body style that had the smaller back glass."

When I was buying a used steel building frame,
the seller wanted a partial trade for a smallblock 400 I have,
    but after looking at it,
he insisted that it wasnt a 400.
    I had done the research...
Thats OK with me, I like smallblock 400s and am happy to keep it.

not about my car but it cracked me up....My friends 17 year old daughter came in last night from driving her o/t import something and told him " I think i'm running out of blinker fluid"

He smiled and asked her how many clicks did she think she had left?

    scary people out there...

  14. I was at a show a couple years ago when I overheard two hicks from the sticks look at a chopped top car and one said to the other "Lookie here Earl, he made the windows outta that new fangled Plex-Oh-Glass."

To be honest, I would have questioned that as well. It's always been my understanding that the small back glass only came in the 150 series cars. Learn something new every day! :)

cbmc: Yes, you are correct that I should have left the quote marks off, since I had the gist of Churchill's comment but not the precise wording. The sentiment has been quoted in various versions a ton of times and attributed to others besides Churchill, including Abe Lincoln. Some contend that the sentiment goes back even earlier, so it is apparently a popular observation, and it's certainly pertinent to the goofy statements people make abut cars.

  20. I have a '76 Trans Am on eBay that I've been told more times has to be a '75 because of the grille and rear window. I post the answers and get more people telling me again the next month or so. Nevermind what the VIN decodes to, or what it says on the NYS title that came with it. And the car is a piece of shit anyways, I don't know what difference it makes either way -

When I swapped out the EFI for a carb on my (off topic) SBF-powered Cobra replica I needed to plug up the bungs for the 02 sensors. Turns out that oil pan drain plugs are the ticket but I spent a bit of time with a counter guy as he argued with me that removing the sensors was 'illegal'. I explained that the car was registered as a '65 and didn't require emissions testing so what I did with the 02 sensors was my business. Then he decides I'm a real asshole for all the extra pollution I'm going to cause....I'm sure he'll eventually go into politics.

My 51 Chev was parked in the local gas station. When I came out from getting some milk there was an old lady looking at the car. She told me her and her late husband had one just like it and even drove it on their honey moon. She said it was in good shape for a 36 Buick. My answer was "yes mam it is, and Thank you" She had the year and make of the car wrong but her story and memories were so nice that all I could do was agree.

Ya, I had one of them (150 SERIES) cars too, but some idiot took off the trim and put (BELAIR) logos on it.

Absolutely the best I have had so far ...
Talking to a guy about his 30 coupe, I complemented his build and told him I had a 30 Tudor. He then told me mine will "Ride better then his coupe, since mine has a longer wheelbase" (his had stock placement suspension, and lets assume he didn't assume I was extending my frame) I blinked a few times and asked him if he built the A or bought it, he blinked and asked how I knew. Awkward. ( I look about 20 years younger then I am, so they always think they are talking to a clueless kid, I hate talking to non car people that bought a hot rod and think that makes them experts.)

All of us have had the parts store conversation.
This very week. Went to AR Wheels site to find a local dealer and picked up the phone to Pep Boys, ... "I need to get a price on American Racing Torq Thrust wheels 15 inch by 4 point 5 inches, 5 by 4.5 lug pattern" ... "What year and model car does it go on" ... ... "Shit ... ... a 30 ford model A, now did that help you any?, Screw it, I will just order from Summit"

I asked for a 54 inch fan belt at the autoparts and the idiot behind the counter just HAD to ask..."Whats it for?"

    (1939 Ford with 350)

    Why does he care?

He looked shocked when he followed me out to the parking lot to my 1939 Ford.

    It really is a 39!

I hate when they ask what its for.

The dump truck driver wanted to know what I was gonna use the sand for.
I really doubt if he can grasp the concept of earthtubes

Several different times I have been asked what year my roadster is.....Um..it's a '46 Chevy coupe... My brother had the last laugh with an "expert" at a show; he has a '70 monte Carlo that he pieced together and made a nice car out of, it's NOT restored, it's just a nice car he likes. So the local Monte Carlo expert stops by to critique his car...after he picks it apart, (wrong brake pedal cover, etc.) he struts off. Later my brother and i are walking around looking at cars, we see the "experts" Monte Carlo and my brother just glances inside....."hey" he says to the "expert", "ya know that steering wheel is off a 72?" the Monte Carlo was a '71...the guys says "yeah, ya got me there"....

I hate to defend the dumb ass at the parts store BUT they ask the very same questions over and over and over...Some ( not all ) but some know after it's asked that it was not needed but it just flew out. My brother is a commercial parts man at O-R...he sees it happen all the time.
